In August of 2009, I was commissioned by Zoo York, a New York City based skateboard company, to visit Buenos Aires to study and document street typography. As soon as my taxi driver took the bustling street Entre Ríos, it was clear that the city and I were going to be good friends. Many of the independently owned businesses on Entre Ríos are adorned with handmade signage. These signs are painted in a style called Fileteado which is a century-old Argentinian type of lettering and floral ornamentation. Nowadays, Fileteado is still a prominent part of the city’s landscape, coloring the façades of restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Calaveras and Diablitos are two new typefaces that were inspired by Fileteado. Stylistically, the fonts are a return to a rhythmic and playful sensibility reminiscent of Vitrina and Cuba, two fonts that I designed in 1996. Along with dynamism and dance, these new fonts incorporate a rigor and functionality essential to labelling any font a ‘workhorse.’ The names Calaveras and Diablitos, came from the name of a song by the infamous Buenos Aires rock band, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. —Pablo A. Árida pays homage to the Argentinian city of San Juan, located in the semi-desert Cuyo region, where cacti are abundant; a characteristic feature of arid habitats. Árida, inspired by the vegetation of the place, looks sharp and aggressive at large sizes but it also feels friendly at a smaller scale⁠—portraying the dichotomy between humans and nature. During the turbulent era of the 1960s, the youth of America found various ways to protest against "The Establishment". Whether it was campus unrest, protest songs, sit-ins or other methods, the message was the counter-culture movement. Arising from this disenchantment with traditional social standards, a small but effective means of protest arose that made no sound, yet spoke volumes - the pin button. Statements against the war in Vietnam, free love, drug use and other messages popped up on little metal discs pinned to tee shirts, suspenders, head band and hats. Sixties Pin Buttons JNL recreates twenty-six of these messages in both white on black (upper case keys) and black on white (lower case keys). Blank buttons in both white and black are found on the parenthesis keys.

Ciutadella was originally commissioned by Mario Eskenazi’s studio. It is a versatile geometric sans serif, a simple, clean and direct family. Although it has been conceived to be used as a display typeface, it performs well in intermediate length texts mostly because of some specific characteristics such as the alternate two-story ‘a’. The first Grippo sketches were done in the 1980s, but only now does it see the light of day as a complete series of interchangeable, layerable fonts. RAN Reformed Typeface for Beginners by Georg Salden - 
a headstrong and courageous approach to an improved handling of handwriting. Diverse and sometimes irreconcilable theories exist about how beginners are supposed to learn writing and reading. This has led to fierce discussions among experts already. We don’t want to pour more oil on the fire, but hope to create a new awareness for this topic, which is important to everyone of us. For beginners the combination of single characters (sounds) to whole words is essential during the acquirement of reading and writing. In this process they develop the skill to recall entire terms from memory. Therefore, after current practice, every word shall be written in a single stroke without lifting the pen in between. Georg Salden contradicts this postulate and warns, that coercively holding the pen down within a word can easily lead to exaggerated loop formations and a general meandering of the written text. The intellectual process in connecting single sounds to words while writing would happen anyway and the prohibition to lift the pen would often lead to tensions. 
To still support the necessary connections in general and to simplify the connecting, he teaches to write all round letters like a, e, g, o with inclusion of the connecting stroke, so that the spacing and combining with the next character arise by themselves. By settling the stroke at certain points and with a clear and logical writing method, a conscious and careful contact with the various strokes arises. All this automatically leads, together with a certain deceleration, to an increase of beauty and readability in the handwriting. 
The repeatedly discussed topic »connected or unconnected« appears to be solved in the most comfortable way as, depending on the particular character combination, both solutions are possible.

Drunk Cowboy is a bouncy version of the popular Old West type style, inspired by hand-made signage in Paducah, Kentucky. The strokes are loopy and loose. The exaggerated terminals give this font a loud, boisterous presence. Drunk Cowboy is a brutish rogue that emanates the fierce independence of Rio as played by Marlon Brando in One Eyed Jacks, but it is most like Paul Newman's Butch Cassidy—a mischievous wise-cracker. And there's gold worth mining for in this font. Dig deep enough and you'll find swash characters and special ligatures, like Th, ST, CT, NT and other popular letter combinations found in the Cowboy dialect.

We produce original printing press letter fonts, for example from the journal Southern Literary Messenger (circa 1830 - 1870). The only one in the world. What makes our fonts so attractive to the eye, are the myriad imperfections. It's not an approximation to the printing-press letters--- these are the actual letters, complete with all their manifold differences. If you look closely you will notice that the letter 'e' say, each time it is printed, is slightly different. These differences arise from the mechanical action of the inked-wooden press on the paper, and cannot be faked by artificial means. The eye subconsciously picks up this text as the actual printing press letters. Edgar Allan Poe published many of his great works in the Southern Literary Messenger, as did many other great nineteenth century writers, ie. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne &c.

Plumper than a misguided Z-lister's dodgy lip job, this is Quinella, named after the cheffy scoops of ice cream and the like, quinelles. It's a cute, fat script with a seventies vibe but a personality all of its own. It's non-connecting in the usual sense, but the letters overlap to make the white space as tiny as possible. Ligatures (standard and discretionary) make smoother solutions for quite a few pairs and trios, and every upper case letter has a more exuberant swash alternate. The contextual alternates feature substitutes in an alternate t for a better fit with certain letters. Fonts don't come much more voluptuous than this. The full-fat, creamy appearance makes it perfect for food packaging, but don't let it end there; it'll make memorable logos, unmissable headlines, and posters with more punch.

Strait passages second part… I tried in this fifth (that's why she took the name "Pentathlon Pro”) consecutive font family to give her a character style with again a strait way of writing. Walking on the same considerations as the previous series (Khamai, Aeolus, Corset & Artios) I tried to give some sense of diversity for the strait passages of character: those fourteen style are the result. And in this family, the “Bold” with "Inlier" and “Bold Italic” with "Inlier Italic” engage in the same way as did the “Layered font families” in the previous series. Also I added a design statement for the twelve zodiac signs, only presented in the Bold, Inlier, Bold Italic and Inlier Italic style. This series is composed of fourteen styles with 628 glyphs each, with true italics and supports Latin, Greek and Cyrillic.

Slinky Chic, svelte and slinky, FS Sophie was inspired by and designed in partnership with ATTIK UK. Ralph M. Unger, (Arno Drescher), 2006, (1936) Originally, Arabella Pro was designed by Arnold Drescher around 1936/1939. Drescher created this wonderful script for former Germany type foundry Joh. Wagner. The typeface has been redesigned, digitized, completed and expanded as OpenType Pro in the profonts studio.Arabella Pro comes in two versions, light and medium, each with a large selection of manually designed ligatures and alternates, i.e. swashed upper case to make this naturally flowing script design a perfect font for OTF-savvy applications like e.g. InDesign or Quark Xpress 7.Arabella Pro light and medium are perfect partners for any sans serif, especially for Futura. It is perfectly suited for anything in the area of headlines, posters, invitations etc. However, since it is very well legible, it can also be used individually for small text blocks.

The best way to radicalize your typographic expression is to use Blackletter! Gothic calligraphy had been used throughout all historical periods without much of the principal development the Latin typefaces underwent. However, since the invention of movable type, even now its slight variations over time can be seen. Blackletters are always used where emotions are required, be it spiritual literature, romantic novels, decadent poetry or extreme music. Dracula is a typeface dedicated to classical horror. I started to draw its letters along with my illustrations for Argo publishers in spring 2017. I needed a specific typeface for book cover and chapter titles to emphasize the mysterious atmosphere of the text. Sharp teeth and claws on a thin blackletter skeleton shall remind of the early vampirism in literature. Its slightly narrowed face enhances a thrilling feel of anguish and despair, whereas the darkest cut may work well on funeral announcements.

Frasa is a contemporary serif family with characteristics that arise from the charms of Caslon and a touch of transitional style; the design offers distinctive proportions to serve long-running small text and the sturdiness of its own form to help as a headline font. Frasa shows that the family is shaped by the traditions of its ancestors through small details that show the personality of the typeface, such as pointed ball terminals and strong shoulders. The italic weights have their own beauty, which is created to humanize the form based on a stylized and natural cursive style with the aim of emphasizing the text's essential elements. The addition of small caps, old-style figures, ligatures, etc. to this type family satisfies conventional typographic requirements. Frasa typefaces can eventually lead to the use of powerful design tools to create editorial and casual design styles.

Rosewood font, like its relatives Zebrawood, Pepperwood and Ponderosa, was created by the designer trio K.B. Chansler, C. Crossgrove and C. Twombly, and has its roots in the slab serif style. The first weight displays the simplicity typical of display typefaces at the end of the 18th century. The other weights are playful variations on this theme. The tendency toward display and ornametal typefaces began with the English Industrial Revolution. The introduction of new machines made mass production possible in the print industry, a technique meant to constantly produce new and unusual products to sell to more and more consumers. Many of the typefaces created in this time were meant simply to catch attention and to advertise products. The two ornamental weights of Rosewood reflect this tendency and never fail to catch the reader's eye. Rosewood, like Zebrawood and Schwennel, is a bicolor font, meaning that the weight Rosewood fill can be used as a decoration for the inner spaces of Rosewood regular.

Optimisti is Finnish for optimist – and it’s an optimistic, light-hearted feeling that this trio of handwriting fonts transfuses into all kinds messages and identities. Casual, playful and character-strong as they are, the three of them make a perfect team for headlines, slogans, teaser texts and brand naming. Besides the two original fonts – “Optimisti Smooth” and “Optimisti Sparkling” differing in outline structure and texture – “Optimisti Decor” now joined the game.
