Designer Steven Skaggs wanted a versatile uncial typeface that was not simply decorative. Traditionally, a true uncial is a majuscule form, entirely lacking in ascenders and descenders. However, by designing Rieven Uncial, Skaggs found a way to use the true uncial as inspiration but retained a lowercase look and feel. Typically, uncials do not have italic forms but in order for Rieven to be a truly versatile face, it was imperative that it should be accompanied by an italic. The italic form owes much to the historical roots in the letra antigua cursiva of the 15th century humanist masters. Rieven Uncial was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in Type Design in the 2010 TDC2.

I had a chat recently with a customer who is a big fan of lettering from the psychedelic poster era. The discussion got me thinking about poster lettering we hadn't yet made into fonts, and a particular sample from a Jimi Hendrix poster I had played around with but never finished making into a font. So I went back to the drawing board and the result is the new Hendrix font. Unlike many of our other Psychedelic fonts which are stripped down to their basic character forms, this font includes the outlines characteristic of a lot of poster lettering from that period. dT Jakob started as a revival by Gustavo Soares for Paul van der Laan’s class at the Type and Media Masters, in The Hague, NL – back in 2007. There are quite a few excellent geometric sans typefaces available, but we did want to make our contribution and have a fine geometric face to offer. dT Jakob was born out of Erbar, by Jakob Erbar, one of the very first geometric sans, released in metal around 1926. Our goal was to make a versatile typeface, that handles display and text typography beautifully. To achieve that we designed a complete range of weights, matching italics and lots of OpenType Features. Hope you enjoy it :D

Named in tribute to the original font name "Albert", we picked a fellow member of Fat Albert's gang for the name of this font. Originally a conceptual approach from the Chatype project of Jeremy Dooley and Robbie de Villiers, Quatie has been restructured to add a new industrial element to Insigne’s offerings. Bigticy is a typeface with a "new-retro" feeling. Its square outline is tempered by rounded angles. This makes it suitable for a large range of applications in the domains of magazine headlines and posters. The Narrow version has been drawn from a title found in an example (dated from the 50's) of the French newspaper "Le Dauphiné Libéré". For the Maxi style, I have tried to reduce to their minimum the inner white spaces. I had in mind those amazing stone walls that one can see in the antique Inca cities in Peru. The stones are so tightly joined that it is impossible to slip a sheet of paper between them. The Plain version is an interpolation of the two other ones. It is a very useful style since I keeps the main quality of each parent: the weight of the Maxi and the narrowness of the Narrow.

When the right late seventies / early eighties message is needed, Toisy comes to the rescue. Founded on a mix of references from letterforms of the time, this new original nods to a style that defined an era. A sexy theme font that conveys a clear image of what was truly chic thirty years ago, this alphabet is deeply rooted in sultry memories of soft, endless nights. Exaggerate contrast between strokes and angular lines combine with rounded corners to provide a unique character and a look that sharply differs when set in all caps or lower case, thanks to an uncommon treatment of density and proportions. Set it real tight, as was typographically in fashion circa 1981. Toisy and Toisy Greek include a set of 13 matching images inspired in leisure stuff and the clothing of the last days of disco. They are different from the set included with Toisy Alt.

Philip Bouwsma returns with yet another great manifestation of historical calligraphy. Luminari is an amalgam of High Middle Ages writing, a blend that combines the ornate Church hands with the simple Carolingian from the ninth to the fifteenth centuries. Its majuscules are particularly influenced by the versals found in the famous Monmouth psalters, as well as those done by the Ramsey Abbey abbots in the twelfth century. The minuscules also exhibit some influence from the book hand of prolific humanist Poggio Bracciolini from the early fifteenth century. Italian and essentially romanesque in style, Luminari exercises a slight tension between the round forms and the angular “gothic” styling. Luminari was updated with plenty of alternates and expanded language support in 2012. It now supports a very wide range of codepages, including Cyrillic, Greek, Central and Eastern European, Turkish, Baltic, Vietnamese, and of course Celtic/Welsh.

Some time ago, I started to think about the idea of combining my passionate hobby cooking with my profession as a graphic designer. While browsing through cooking books, cooking magazines and graphic publications I noticed that there were no symbols and drawings easily recognizable for interested cooks (hobby or professional). So I decided to create symbols for all the classical cooking paraphernalia still found in grand mother’s kitchen cabinet. René Menue Symbol contains 99 kitchen symbols of classical design and quality.
