If there s a back-story about the design inspiration for Modern Appliances JNL, it's lost to time. An unfinished design for quite a while, this clean sans with an Art Deco flair was recently completed, and the design quality should speak more for its appeal than any promotional blurb.

The cover lettering of a 1940s issue of a romance comic spotted in an auction online was the inspiration for Monthly Adventures JNL. Classic in its Art Deco look, this condensed outline font is evocative of the hand-lettered titles used during the Golden Age of the comic book. Available in both the original outline version and a thick, solid version with the outline removed, as well as oblique variations of both.

Majora Pro is a slab serif typeface which derives its name from a Portuguese historical toy manufacturer. The origins of the font Versailles go back to the 19th century in France when, with the introduction of lithography, alphabets could contain freer forms. The basic forms are Modern Face with triangular serifs. The direct influence for Versailles was the writing on the back of the memorial to Charles Garnier, the architect of the Paris Opera. Versailles is a classic font for advertisements, perfect for shorter texts and titles/headlines and it makes an impression of elegance and strength.

My affection for Slab Serifs began in the early 1960s in Kansas City when Rob Roy Kelly was at the Kansas City Art Institute, teaching and writing his book on American Wood Type. I got to know him just well enough to gain access to his fabulous collection of wood type and wood type catalogs. Later, in the1970s, I tried to re-create a Nebiolo Egiziano for Roger Black at New West magazine. And again for Roger, in the 1980s, I designed a Slab Serif logo for Newsweek Magazine. Finally, in 2003, designed the Sutro Family. There were things I didn't like about it, so, over time, I’ve been adding some things and dressing it up a little. Sutro Shaded has existed for a few years as a one color, outlined, drop-shadowed display font. It seemed like it was just dying for a little color. I added five more fonts: Fill, Gradient, Hatching, Rules and HiLite. These fonts can be used in different combinations to achieve various effects. This face was designed in 1925 as the Monotype answer to the very popular Cooper Black. Goudy is also quite similar in appearance to Ludlow Black and Pabst Extra Bold, both of which were also done in response to Cooper Black.

Deep in the bowels of the earth a tortured creature tries to mimic the writings of mankind. It labors long and hard carving the letter forms on the walls of its cave. Many years later, rubbings where taken of these impressions and fashioned to create this hideous font. All kidding aside, with such a formal training in type design, it was not easy for me to create these ill-shaped letters. I kept wanting to smooth out the outlines. Anyway, it was a good exercise and we now have this antique heavy-weight.

One good pun is worth a simple description… Nondescript JNL… 'Non' - not. 'de' - of, in Spanish. script - a cursive (handwritten) letter form. So… while nondescript generally means lacking any defining description, in this case it also means "not of a script"… which is precisely what a typeface such as this one is!
