The idea of Limes emerged at the seashore last year in late summer. Getting ready in advance for a dark winter, we've decided to design a special fontfamily which would bring a bit of vitamins and summer sun into the rough everyday routine and help us survive the cold winter. Limes is both a dream of the sun while it’s gone and a refreshing breeze for the time when it finally gets warm! Limes is a completely handwritten fontfamily and consists of 23 typefaces. To create Limes Sans and Limes Slab families, we've used regular watercolor brushes, and to create monolinear Limes Script, as well as for Catchwords and Dingbats, we've used a felt-tip pen with circular section. Limes Sans and Limes Slabs fonts work perfectly together with Limes Script due to the general handwritten idea, as well as due to the widths contrast – despite its width, Limes Script mixes well with narrower opponents and adds a bit of human spontaneity into the general handwritten concept. Kubrick is an experiment in extremes. The Light font is very tall and slender, the Black font is very massive, and Kubrick's slender counters push some of its glyphs to the edge of recognition. The thin counters and negative spaces also give text set in Kubrick a definite visual sparkle, especially in all-uppercase settings. Because of its extreme letterforms, Kubrick is recommended only for large display use. The default letterspacing is set fairly wide to keep text legible. Kubrick was a double-experiment. One part of it was to see how heavy and massive a typeface I could make while still keeping it legible. The other part was to develop a Multiple Master font. Multiple Master fonts were a format developed by Adobe that allowed the user to change things like the weight and width of a typeface. Monollith started as just such a Multiple Master typeface, but when Adobe discontinued the Multiple Master format, I stopped work on the typeface. Later I decided to continue work on it, but as five separate font weights: Light, Medium, Bold, ExtraBold and Black. Very rectilinear letterforms with extremely narrow counters and negative spaces. The five fonts go from very thin and condensed to very heavy and extended. Use in large display settings where unornamented high visual impact is desired.

Elliptical The squareness of curves. That was the elliptical – in more than one sense – notion being explored in the making of FS Hackney. The squareness of curves and vertical terminals to create a gentle, soft sans serif, with a little bit of magic. A momentary thought – “It doesn’t have to be like this” – provided the spur to explore the verticals and skeletons of letterforms beyond conventional type design limits. A 12-month gestation period gave rise to a font with a larger-than-usual character set, including non-lining figures, small caps and superior and inferior numbers. It’s a collection that speaks confidently for itself. Assertive It was the Hackney carriage – the black London cab – that gave this font its name, not the north London neighbourhood. In response to many requests for Morpheus, an idea came to us. Why not make a font that looked a bit like Morpheus, but which had more attractive, more consistent character forms, was rendered cleanly and properly spaced and kerned? Stadia is designed around a series of modular units: quartercircles, teardrop shapes, squares, circles and variations thereon. The versatility of these basic shapes is such that a teardrop, for example, can represent a looped bowl, as in the lower part of the a, while also representing a curved arc at the top of the same character. The strict grid is broken for the T and the Y, and the placement of accents. The alternative – basing a T, for example, across three units – though rational, is far less aesthetically pleasing. As always with type design, one has to know when the internal structural rules should be bent for a more beautiful result. The horizontal lines appear to travel through the letters, bursting into stars in the counters of lower-case characters such as the o and p. The outline version is weighted to the same width as the gaps between the units.

ITC Motter Corpus was designed by the Austrian type designer Othmar Motter in 1993 to combine the display advantages of a sans serif extra bold design with the legibility of a roman weight. The Motter Corpus is available in the weights regular and condensed regular. The capitals with their strong strokes display slight irregularities and natural looking outlines. When used in very large point sizes the tiny serifs become noticeable. Distinguishing characteristics of this typeface are the unusual design of the g with its upward reaching ear and that of the capital C, whose curve ends in an angular stroke in its upper third. Almost, but not quite, a sans serif, the typeface has diminutive serifs which, along with its modulated weight contrasts, make ITC Motter Corpus remarkable legible in display applications and will give text a nostalgic feel. A similar typeface is Linotype Bariton.

Snuggles began as a set of hexagons and hour-glass shapes that fit together. Letters were formed from these shapes with effort made to preserve as much as possible the original outlines. The result is two sets of letters that by themselves are awkward and misshapen and that only look good when mixed together. The OpenType contextual alternatives (calt) feature automatically alternates the sets in computer programs that support this feature. Snuggles-Lower replaces the letters of Snuggles-Regular with lower-case shapes, but without ascenders or descenders, and the results are jarring. Several of these lower-case shapes (D, N, T, W, and Y) are available as OpenType stylistic-set alternatives in the Snuggels-Regular font. Both Snuggels-Regular and Snuggels-Lower have light versions. Snuggels loves to be noticed so it likes to be large and it considers foolish anyone who would use it as body text.

Kiosk is a prominent display typeface pair. It is a sturdy condensed sans serif and an eloquent brush script. In addition there are textured “print” versions of them both. Bigticy is a typeface with a "new-retro" feeling. Its square outline is tempered by rounded angles. This makes it suitable for a large range of applications in the domains of magazine headlines and posters. The Narrow version has been drawn from a title found in an example (dated from the 50's) of the French newspaper "Le Dauphiné Libéré". For the Maxi style, I have tried to reduce to their minimum the inner white spaces. I had in mind those amazing stone walls that one can see in the antique Inca cities in Peru. The stones are so tightly joined that it is impossible to slip a sheet of paper between them. The Plain version is an interpolation of the two other ones. It is a very useful style since I keeps the main quality of each parent: the weight of the Maxi and the narrowness of the Narrow.

How many times have you seen lettering on a book cover, poster, or card and wanted to make something similar? Decorata’s eight intertwining weights finally make that possible in an intelligent way. The first major collaboration of its kind, Decorata pairs the talents of supreme lettering artist Martina Flor and masterful type designer Neil Summerour. Lettering was traditionally understood as using words in an artistic way, while type design created written language for easy reading, the one overlapping the other in several ways. For this unique project, Martina created several versions of the alphabet and its decorative layers in her eye-catching style. Neil then took those designs and created an enormous eight-style font family that respects the designer’s need for control and capitalizes on the artist’s expressiveness. Each style can work separately but, on top of the foundational styles, try placing the Lace, then Filigree in contrasting colors.
