Organic and sublime, Fansan is an Art Nouveau type family that includes roman, italic, and optical sizes. Its roots can be found in famous works such as Benguiat, Windsor, and Melbourne — worldwide typographic references which all have a sense of being imperfectly appealing. The aesthetic influence of Art Nouveau on Fansan can be seen in the top-heavy stress found in most characters. Applying this stress consistently throughout the character set was a significant challenge in the design of the family. The sharp terminals of numerous lowercase characters — including the a, f and g — provide a visual link between the upper and lowercase forms. As a result, Fansan is able to be elegant and pointed in its lighter weights, and playful and full of character in its heavier styles. Fansan is ideally suited for use at display sizes where personality is needed.

Quase is a very free interpretation of the types found in the “Specimen of Printing Types” by William Caslon from 1785. We didn’t want to follow any of the models introduced in the Specimens, but rather gather a series of typographic aspects that we found useful and interesting from the several sizes and styles available and then give them consistency and new proportions so they could fit our very own purpose. We wanted to start with Caslon and then transform it into an editorial typeface, hence the increase of the x-height and the radical reduction of the ascenders and descenders. Despite the Display, Headline and Text fonts we also wanted to make a single weight Poster version with, inspired by the mechanical script introduced in the Double-Pica Script, to be used in magazines or as a complementary display typeface.

From today's point of view Katarine has a rather unusual origin. Initially an all-caps display face, what was to become the Medium weight of the family was augmented with a lower case, then the character set was completed by adding all the missing glyphs. The next step was the creation of the Light and the Bold weights with matching Italics. This working method compromised the relationships between the characters across the different weights After some consideration the decision was made to start over and draw the complete family from scratch. This time the "conventional" process was followed — first the Light and Bold weights were designed. Those extremes were used to interpolate the Regular, Medium and Semibold weights. When compared to the original, the glyphs of the new fonts are slightly wider. The construction of the letters is sturdy, with an x-height that varies from the heaviest to the lightest weights. The relationship of the stem weight between the horizontal and vertical strokes is carefully balanced. Characters are open and firm; the italics have room to breathe. The original fonts included two sets of small caps — Small Caps and Petite Caps. However neither set were suited for emphasis, with the Small Caps being too tall and the Petite Caps too short. We decided to replace them both with one set of traditional small caps, slightly taller than the x-height, perfectly suited for emphasis in text usage. The original version of Katarine was partly incorporated into the new OpenType versions. Thus most of the original arrows, frames and boxes can be found in the new Katarine. Each individual weight now contains 830 glyphs, nine sets of numerals, small caps, numerous ligatures and fractions. An additional font named Numbers contains numerals in circles and squares, and is now augmented with accented caps and a number of terminal alternatives, which can easily be accessed through stylistic sets. We also added two extra variants, Experts Regular and Experts Black (in inverted form). Katarine Std preserves the solid construction and excellent legibility of the original family, but has now become a fully featured OpenType typeface. Katarine is suited for a broad range of applications, from simple layouts to intricate corporate systems. It is the typeface of choice where the cold, austere character of modern sans serifs are inappropriate, yet simple shapes and good legibility are required.

For much of the world, the last half of December encompasses the beginning of winter and the a season of gift-giving, marked by Hanukkah and Christmas. It is generally accepted that the tradition of giving of gifts at this time was begun by The Three Wisemen. As described in The Gospel According to Matthew, the wisemen, led by a star from a distant land to the east, found the baby Jesus. First, they worshipped him and then, "they presented him with gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh." (Matthew 2:11). Thus began the tradition of celebrating the birth of Christ with the giving of gifts. There is a parallel tradition in the Jewish faith of the giving of gelt or gold at Hanakkuh to help support poor students, in keeping with the rich history of scholarship that is fundamental to the rabbinic system. Inevitably, in our secular culture, there has been a blending and a secularization of these traditions. The reasons have gotton lost in the “gimme.” What is often overlooked is what Paul realized when he told Timothy, “Neglect not the gift that is in thee.” The most importent gift is the gift inside of us, the gift of sacrificial love for others. When we let that gift be diminished in our minds amid the clutter of modern day material seeking, we can recall the prophesy of Micah over 2800 years ago, But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel: whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting." GOR type was born from a one letter: GOR has gracefully form lines and pleasant proportions. The special charm of this font comes from a combination of narrow and wide letters, rounded letters, which is creating a lively and original character. Linotype Zensur is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. The characters look as though parts of each of them were censored or removed, leaving just enough left over to know what was meant. The basic forms of this font are sans serif and the rounded corners give it an almost soft character. Linotype Zensur is a distinctive typeface which is especially good for headlines in larger point sizes.

Realgar is a generic and neutral typeface but with enough personality to be different, but not as much to be unfamiliar. The name refers to an ancient natural pigment, known for its vivid orange colour. It is a multipurpose typeface in an eclectic style that combines geometric and grotesque with some humanist touches. The Confetti is a typeface created about 1930 by the defunct José Iranzo foundry in Barcelona, and imitates the forms and gestures of handwriting created with a round nib as “Speedball”Series B. The original typefaces were a pair, called “Escritura Energica ” and “Escritura maravilla”. The typography has a dynamic air, caused partially by irregular alignment of the characters respect to the baseline and aesthetics takes us to the proposed commercial lettering or advertising of years 20-30. Pixerius is a family of pixel fonts containing 3 characters in width and 12 styles, from square shapes to very rounded ones. There is also a tracing mixing letters of different widths in a random order. The font is suitable for logos, large headlines, posters and signs. A spirited font, Linotype Dropink may remind you of your first attempts with a broad-tipped pen or of schoolwork in days of yore. However, the blots of ink are in this case done on purpose, are indeed the highlight of the font, large and small, round and irregularly sheped. A ‘Brochette’ in French is a skewer. I used to be a tour guide and some years ago, I guided a couple of tours in Mali. Every night at dinner we had the choice of a ‘Brochette de Capitaine’ (grilled Nile perch on a skewer) or a ‘Brochette de Bœuf’ (grilled beef on a skewer). Of course, every night the Brochette came with French fries and ‘petits pois’ (peas). It was really nice, but after 4 months of eating Brochettes, I longed for something different! Brochette is a very nice rounded font. It comes with curls, swirls and swashes.

Suti is a non-connected sign painters casual script with upper and lower cases. Suti was originally designed in 2010 but it was completely re-drawn in 2016. Casual lettering is a style sign painters use. Every sign painter has more or less their own style to make these letters. The casual alphabets are painted with speed and they don’t need to line perfectly but letters are still clean and easy to read. Suti has smooth and round forms. Friendly and casual looks. It is suitable for logos, titles, package design or where ever you need a fun and sympathetic display font.

Rachele is a mono line based script thin font. Inspired on the cute “Italian Bella Scrittura” handwriting but influenced by Spencerian. Ornaments and ligatures make this hand more expressive offering round stroke endings and a flowing shape. Designed between italic and script styles Airco is a typeface designed between italic and script styles. The letterform finish is rounded. Designed ultra slanted (27°), the shapes evoke a fast and assertive movement. Originally drawn in 1999 as a college project with the ambition to make the ‘most beautiful’ alphabet in the world. After these heroic beginnings Spaghetti lay dormant in the VLNL vaults for many years, appearing to silently peter away. Now look at it! Ten years hence, it is finally being served up in glorious OpenType, precisely al dente. As automated special sauce, each lowercase character before or after a space receives a nice little ball ending to round things off. And finally, the parmesan cheese sprinkled on top is like a tasty bunch of ligatures – enough to make your mouth water.

A font drawn in a rounded rectangle looks modern – if we do not mind that it was in vogue mainly in the 80s of the last century and was created in the fifties, when various Italian designers noticed that the outline of a glass TV screen is actually the letter “o“. Since then, this progressive idea has undergone many improvements, which can be summarized in the notion of “popular-scientific typographic revival”. The present incarnation called “Superscience” has the advantage of having extreme variations and nicely simplified letters, as well as the usual repertoire of OTF functions and playful variations.
