Newly revised and neatly digitalized by Ingo Zimmermann In 1902, Peter Behrens (1869–1940), architect, designer and typographer, created a new ”German“ type which became very successful very quickly for the Rudhard’sche Gießerei (foundry which later became Gebr. Klingspor AG) in Offenbach am Main. It served, for example, as the official German type for the world expositions in 1904 and 1910. Behrens himself writes about the development of this type ”...For the actual form of my type, I took the technical principle of the Gothic script, the stroke of the quill feather. Once I set on the concept for this ‘Origami’ inspired font, I used an imaginary strip of folded paper as the basis for each character, the folded effect being realized fully by incorporating an incised line. Of course the folded paper aspect is just a two dimensional illusion but subconsciously, will automatically be interpreted three dimensionally. There are numerous options for creating alternative characters following this logic, as the centuries-old Origami tradition itself illustrates quite clearly, but I wanted to maintain an ordered sense of style and balance throughout the full character set, so avoided any unnecessary flourishes, staying true to the Japanese ethos and spirit.

Groovy started out as a prospective variant in the ‘Flashback’ series but very quickly established its own distinct appearance, especially with the lower case letters blending into the format so well. There wasn't any preconceived idea to design a retro looking font in principle, it simply evolved that way, but I do think it has several characteristics reminiscent of style genres from the '70s. It’s probably quite subliminal and like me, you may find yourself thinking, what does that remind me of? The double-entendre'd title is quite apt too, not merely for reasons of its outwardly retro appearance but also because of the considered, rounded elements forming the negative spaces throughout. The font also has something of a chameleon-like personality, being both adaptable and capable of having a trendy / fun appearance, or alternatively something solid and stylish, depending on the use, as demonstrated in the banner examples here.

This family was inspired by the set of fonts used in Paris by Ponce Rosset, aka “Faucheur” to print the account of the second voyage to Canada by Jacques Cartier, first edition, in 1545. It is a Garalde set, the punchcutter is unknown, certainly it was not Garamond himself. In our two styles (normal and italic), fontfaces, kernings and spaces are scrupulously the same as in the original. This Pro font covers Western, Eastern and Central European languages (including Celtic) Baltic and Turkish, with standard and long-s ligatures in each of the two styles.

Samhain is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. There is no set date, but normally it is held around the end of October and beginning of November. Samhain font was made with a bamboo pen and Chinese ink on rough paper - hence the grungy look. It is quite a heavy font, so I wouldn't set a complete text in it, but it is ideal to create headlines, posters, postcards and invitations. Of course, Halloween comes to mind! Samhain comes with extensive language support.

Favela is an experimental, geometric and sans serif type family. It is characterised by scalable construction of glyphs – hairline version is at the same time condensed, regular is normal, and black is super extended, with short ascenders. Favela was made mainly for branding and display purposes but middle weights are prefect for short texts. LOGX-30 is a geometric, all-caps, display typeface. As a brother of LOGX-10 and LOGX-20 , this is the most narrow version in a series of three related typefaces. LOGX-30 is designed, like other LOGX versions, for a wide range of graphic designs and visual identifications. I think that it works best in works with a technical, geometric style, and rather striving for minimalism. Both the normal and the italic version can be used together to compose graphics, photos, large and small text in an interesting way.

Usually I prefer desserts that aren't overly sweet, but a week ago I lost my sense of tasting - due to Corona, and when I wanted something sweet...I preferred it overly sweet...of course because I hardly could taste the overwhelming sweetness! But now, I have my sense of tasting (and smelling!) back, and everything is back to normal. And since I completed this easy-recipe-inspired handmade font while suffering from Corona, I thought I'd name it Overly Sweet. And...well. because, the font is somewhat overly sweet (without being over the top sweet!)

The font accelerates the process of adding inscriptions and eliminates the need to redraw the same letters every time. The lettering is based on a simple felt-tip pen. My first font for 2009 was Aerle. It is a new dark sans serif font in my continuing objective of designing book fonts that I can really use. It made a little ripple in the industry, but more than that I found that I loved it with Aramus and Artimas — my latest book font family with the same proportions. In many ways, Aerle is a very different direction for me built on what I have learned on Aramus and other recent developments in my style. The concept came to me while using Bitstream's Mister Earl on a site online—though there is no direct reference. I wanted a more playful heavy sans with a much smaller x-height than I have been using lately, plus taller ascenders. As I was using Aerle, I constantly needed a light and bold version. The new direction I am taking is a result of a decision that my fonts, though I loved the character shapes, produced an even type color that is too dark or a little dense. Aerle was an attempt to get away from that look even though the letterspacing is quite tight. For Aerle Thin I pushed a little further in that direction and increased the letterspacing. The hand-drawn shapes vary a lot, many pushing the boundaries of the normal character. This gives a little looseness and helps the lightness in feel I am looking for. It will be interesting to see where this all goes. Most new type around the world is far too perfect for my taste. While the shapes are exquisite, the feel is not human but digital mechanical. I find myself wanting to draw fonts that feel human — as if a person crafted them. In most ways this is a normal font for me in that it has caps, lowercase, small caps with the appropriate figures for each case. These small caps were very small (x-height as is proper). So Aerle's small caps are a little oversize because they plugged up too bad at x-height size. The bold is halfway between. These size variations seem important and work well in the text. This font has all the OpenType features in the set for 2009. There are several ligatures for your fun and enjoyment: bb gg sh sp st ch ck ff fi fl ffi ffl ffy fj ft tt ty Wh Th and more. Like all of my fonts, there are: caps, lowercase, & small caps; proportional lining figures, proportional oldstyle figures, & small cap figures; plus numerators, denominators, superiors, inferiors, and a complete set of ordinals 1st through infinity.
