Rasteroids Old is a typographic flashback to computing of the early 1980s, when 7-pin dot-matrix printers were the state of the art, and most home computer displays were TVs hooked up to RF modulators. Rasteroids Old not only captures the dot-matrix printer look, but recreates the rasterized appearance of text on those lower-resolution monitors. Rasteroids Old is a fixed width font lacking any descenders. Furthermore, the character set is limited to the subset of US-ASCII that would be available on a typical machine of 1980. As such, it is not intended for large areas of copy.

Now even more design possibilities with the popular DIN Next. With its technical and neutral character, DIN Next has earned a permanent place in contemporary typography. Now, DIN Next Slab expands the font family further, offering new design potential. Now comes the next step, DIN Next Slab, also produced under the direction of Akira Kobayashi. On a team with Sandra Winter and Tom Grace, Kobayashi is creating the new font variant based on the optimized shapes of DIN Next. The expansion will make the popular font all the more flexible and versatile. Apart from that, the geometric slab serifs underline the technical and formal nature of the font and emphasize a central design element of DIN Next. However, the team did have some challenges to overcome. While it is relatively easy to imagine DIN Next Light with slab serifs, the amount of available space quickly disappears when it comes to the Black styles. Winter explains that many tests and trials were necessary to find a compromise between space, letters and the serif shapes. Experiments with modified contrast in the weight or only one-sided serifs were quickly abandoned. The central, technical and powerful character of the font changed too much. Nevertheless, it was necessary to simplify slightly the shape of some letters, such as the ‘k’ or ‘x’, for example. These changes, first developed in the Black styles, were applied to all weights in order to lend the font a consistent appearance. Like DIN Next, DIN Next Slab also has seven weights, which cover the range from Ultralight to Black, each with matching italic. There are various character sets in all of the styles and the four middle weights have small capitals available. DIN Next Slab harmonizes perfectly with the styles of DIN Next: the basic letterforms and weights are identical. Both versions of the font can work together perfectly, not just in headlines and body text, but also within a text; they complement each other very well as design variations. Comalle is an organic typeface that rescues some elements of handwritten script, but its stroke does not necessarily answer to a literal calligraphy structure. So Comalle could produce a powerful impact on the page, it was designed with thicker strokes than its counter forms. The objective is that the black of the letter fills the page and causes a fastest visual impact than typographies that balance blacks and whites. One of the most important tasks of the Comalle design was to think of how to handle the unequal percentages of blacks and whites in the typeface. The peculiar thing, is that the precision work of the letter does not make the blacks, but the whites; this is the reason why in one first instance it was very valid to start off designing in a very gross way, nevertheless, the majority energies are put in the details of the design of counter space. From the drained filling concept of forms Comalle was born, a typeface that pretends to enchant with its delicate counter space design and to impact with the heavy outlines which compose its form.

Cooper Black's second coming to American design in the mid-sixties, after almost four decades of slumber, can arguably be credited with (or, depending on design ideology, blamed for) the domino effect that triggered the whole art nouveau pop poster jam of the 1960s and 1970s. By the early 1970s, though Cooper Black still held its popular status (and, for better or for worse, still does), countless so-called hippie and funk faces were competing for packaging and paper space. The American evolution of the genre would trip deeper into psychedelia, drawing on a rich history of flared, flourished and rounded design until it all dwindled and came to a halt a few years into the 1980s. But the European (particularly German) response to that whole display type trend remained for the most part cool and reserved, drawing more on traditional art nouveau and art deco sources rather than the bottomless jug of new ideas being poured on the other side of the pond. One of the humorous responses to the "hamburgering" of typography was Friedrich Poppl's Poppl Heavy, done in 1972, when Cooper Black was celebrating its 50th anniversary. It is presented here in a fresh digitization under the name Gator (a tongue-in-cheek reference to Ray Kroc, the father of the fast food chain). To borrow the title of a classic rock album, Gator is meaty, beaty, big and bouncy. It is one of the finest examples of how expressively animated a thick brush can be, and one of the better substitutes to the much overused Cooper Black. Gator comes in all popular font formats, and sports an extended character set covering the majority of Latin-based languages. Many alternates and ligatures are included in the font.

The process, however, wasn’t choosing one design and modifying it. The makings of all the designs were on the pages. It was just a matter of culling out the right collection of characters to build the foundations for the four flavors of Alfie. Because they share the same family roots, each design in the Alfie family can be paired and intermixed. Ford admits that there’s a hint of Emil Klumpp’s 1950s Murray Hill typeface (https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/bitstream/murray-hill/) in the Alfie family. Just enough to give the design a 50s vibe. Lagos was created because of the lack of African-inspired fonts that are truly modern without being partly art-deco in origin. I wanted to make a vigorous, sharp-edged font that reflects the energy and dynamism of modern Africa. The lines of the font combine the sharp angularity of African rocks and mountains with the smooth fluidity of Africa's snake-black rivers. The font is supplied in two styles, Lagos Regular and Lagos Light. Lagos Light is not a simple, mechanical modification of Lagos Regular. The outlines and proportions have been subtly modified to accommodate the lighter weight. Lagos contains a full 256 character set (upper and lower case, punctuation, diacritical characters, special symbols and numerals), in which all characters have been fully kerned and letter-spaced.

Baraka - in Swahili - a blessing. It is a simple, block-like typeface closed in cuboids. It was created and designed in Tanzania, Africa. It contains 183 gliphs, which due to their simplicity, which consisted in cutting out letters from rectangles using as little light as possible, makes an impression and is in fact a very heavy display typeface. It was created primarily for posters and labels, where thanks to its modularity and form enclosed in a limited geometric figure

You may already have guessed it...Litter Funk is experimental typography. Some letters are fat blocks, others have stars, stripes or dots, some are funny and funky while others are plain weird - but all in all, they leave a really nice confusing effect when used. Due to the contextual alternates, each letter comes in 5 different versions, and automatically cycle as you type. Well, the font was fun to make - I hope you have fun using it! :)

Demotte is a display face constructed from triangular blocks (wedges) and some circles. It comes in two styles. In one style the triangular blocks point up so that the letters are bottom heavy, and in the other the blocks point down so that the letters are top heavy. Also included in the family is a distorted version of the design.

The techno sound of the 1990s, a personal computer, font creation software, and some inspiration all came together to inspire the F2F (Face2Face) font series. Alessio Leonardi and his friends had the demand to create new unusual typefaces, which would be used in the leading German techno magazine of the day, Frontpage. Even typeset as small as 6-points, in nearly undecipherable layouts, it was a pleasure for the kids to read and try to decrypt the messages.
