THE NORWEGIAN RUNES The oldest runes discovered in Norway date from 400 AD. They were based upon the 24 - rune Elder Futhark of Germanic origin. Two of the runes in the Elder Futhark, Pertra and Eoh, have never been found in any Norwegian rune text. From 550 AD to 700 AD there was a transition period between the older 24-rune Futhark and the newer 16-rune Futharks. By the end of this period, the 24-rune Futhark went completely out of use and the 16-rune Futharks had prevailed. Then, about 900 AD, the Shorttwiggs-runes were introduced from Sweden. Shortly thereafter, from 1000 AD, Futharks with more than 16 runes became more prevalent, as these were more consistent with the Latin alphabet. These types of runes were used in Norway up to 1800 AD.

Schlange is a rich typeface with rounded terminals. The family includes five sans serifs and five slab serifs in weights from ultra light to bold. Schlange’s personality is determined by an open aperture and quite large lower case characters in comparison with the upper case set. Schlange’s personality is open and friendly, giving a text it’s used for a soft, warm appeal. Schlange will work well as a display type (think titles, short magazine call-outs, ad banners, and such), but it’s not a good choice for extensive bodies of academic text. Created in 1999 by the Swiss designer Isabelle Stutz, the letters in this design have a light, informal nature, and appear as if they were written out quickly, using a writing instrument similar to a ballpoint pen. This steam era typeface, created by Gustav Schroeder in 1884, found popular use on soap box labels and tobacco tins during its initial release. Then, later, a successful and stout revival of Gustav's face, named Othello, was carried out by Morris Fuller Benton in 1934, and the typeface's appeal widened to include items such as broadside posters featuring Boris Karloff's Frankenstein. After metal gave way to film type, Gustav's creation experienced a brief fashion moment in the 1960's, but then disappeared entirely, never re-surfacing as a full digital typeface. With the release of Bathysphere, the typeface comes full circle, having been completely redrawn from scratch using Gustav's original specimens. The new extended language support establishes the typeface firmly in the modern era, while Bathysphere's refinement of subtle blunt corners restores a deep-sea grace to this iron giant.

From time to time at Tipo Pèpel we like to play like children and get our hands dirty with whatever implement that can be used to mark or draw on the walls, even if the grown-ups don’t like it. And this is more or less what happened with “Trepa” (catalan for “stencil”), a typeface with a fresh and uninhibited appearance, inspired by commercial signs and the 1950’s French art movement “Graphie Latine”. Far removed from the straight lines of vector art, “Trepa” has the necessary roughness to make this class of font stand out and what’s more it has an extensive range of latin characters covering more than 200 languages, and a pair of complementary texture fonts which further multiply its creative possibilities. This font family was inspired by a visit to the Duxford Air Museum just outside of Cambridge, UK, where the whole history of aviation is represented in a series of exhibits ranging from early prop planes to supersonic jetliners.
