Aranjuez is the latest Koziupa and Paul adventure. Kessel 205 is inspired by the classic, geometric sans-serifs such as Futura, but has shallower ascenders and descenders for a more compact look, and features an art deco influence with sharp points at the apex of many characters, lowered crossbars and an oblique crossbar on the lower case e. It's a versatile, modern sans, highly legible as a text font and with a distinctive, elegant look as a display font at larger sizes. In September, 2003 I was contacted by MTV for the restyling of mtv.it I started from the beginning to work on a radical simplification of its visual elements, to achieve a better usability. It didn't take me so much to realize the basic design I attempted would have called for a notable reduction of the rich imagery distinguishing MTV's visual identity. As a visual aid to help me in this process I designed Virna, a headline "op-art" inspired face with the ability to create both vertical and horizontal ligatures between single words among two text lines, with the same ease of linking letters in handwriting or a linked script typeface.

Einhorn is a peculiar typeface. Difficult to classify, this upright, bold, script-like semi serif typeface was designed in 1980 by Alan Meeks. Meeks was inspired by the art nouveau period, and may have been trying to liven up the design scene. In 1980, typefaces like Helvetica and Univers were ubiquitous, and the digital revolution was still years away. Experimental faces like Einhorn helped fill the gap for creative designers looking for untraditional choices in which to set headlines and advertising work. The merit of pioneer display faces like Einhorn have never lessened; Einhorn still sets a mean display text, and works great in logos and other corporate ID solutions.

I started to work at the Bernhard Studio in 1952 to 1959 in New York. I helped with some type designs and many other projects, this two tiered signature was added on all of Bernhard’s art that was produced in the past and in his later years. In the 50’s I thought Bernhard’s Gothic face was quite a bit outdated but as you may know it has become one of todays most used faces. His signature is based on his Bernhard Gothic Font. With todays computer technology I have digitized the caps and added lower case glyphs with lower ascenders and other slight changes.

Jugendstil Initials were designed by Heinrich Vogeler around 1905, based on the German blackletter tradition. A similar set of initials by Vogeler, but based on roman letters was released by Rudhardsche Geisserei of Offenbach at about this time. I believe the originals were woodcuts. The backgrounds to the letterforms may be seen as examples of Heimatkunst, an art movement within Germany that drew deliberate inspiration from the rural countryside. Like the Arts and Crafts Movement in England a little earlier, Heimatkunst may be seen, in part, as a romantic rejection of urban industrialization, while at the same time representing a back-to-roots nationalism. Like any river, it was fed by many streams. Jugendstil Initials is an experiment with which I am most pleased. It is far and away the most complex font HiH has produced and I was uncertain whether or not it could be done successfully. To oversimplify, a font is produced by creating outlines of each character, using points along the outline to define the contour. A simple sans-serif letter A with crossbar can be created using as few as 10 points. We decided to make a comparison of the number of points we used to define the uppercase A in various fonts. Cori, Gaiety Girl and Page No 508 all use 12 points. Patent Reclame uses 39 and Publicity Headline uses 43. All the rest of the A’s, except the decorative initials, fall somewhere in between. The initial letters run from 48 points for Schnorr Initials to 255 for Morris Initials Two, with 150 being about average. Then there is a jump to 418 points for Morris Initials One and, finally, to 1626 points for Jugendstil Initials. And this was only after we selectively simplified the designs so our font creation software (Fontographer) could render them. The average was 1678, not including X and Y. There was no X and Y in the original design and we have provided simple stand-ins to fill out the alphabet, without trying to imitate the style of the orginal design. We did a lot of looking to find a compatible lower case. We decided that Morris Gothic from the same period was the best match in color, design and historical context. We felt so strongly about the choice that we decided to produce our Morris Gothic font for the purpose of providing a lower case for Jugendstil Initials. The long s, as well as the ligatures ch and ck are provided. at 181, 123 (leftbrace) and 125 (rightbrace) respectively. This font was a lot of work, but I think it was worth it. I hope you agree.

An Art Deco, script inspired typeface for 'modern' times, Pauline Didone is a full type family with a unique and flavorful design. It has a sense of femininity and naïveté that comes from its predecessor, Pauline. It's a typeface useful for short bits of copy, logotypes and interesting titling. FF Kievit Slab is an industrial strength, do anything, go anywhere, kind of design. Its exceptional legibility and straightforward strength contrasts with a friendly humanistic underpinning. Michael Abbink and Paul van der Laan carefully revised character shapes and stroke contrast of FF Kievit, when they adapted them to FF Kievit Slab. The result is that the striking and powerful FF Kievit Slab easily complements the other members of the FF Kievit super family, that also includes FF Kievit and FF Kievit Serif, and stands on its own in as a multi-talented design. Though created from the sans, FF Kievit Slab is not FF Kievit with slabs serifs tacked on. The family is the fruit of a four-year collaboration between Abbink and Van der Laan, to make the perfect companion to the FF Kievit family. Each glyph was painstakingly adjusted and to achieve proper density, contrast, and balance, while remaining a perfect companion to its sans serif and oldstyle cousins. Its nine weights and italics also harmonize perfectly with the original FF Kievit design. Working on a Star Wars project? This font is in Aurebesh, the main written language of the Star Wars universe. In this case I designed a font that looks like it has been scratched into a wall. All the additional letters from the Aurebesh character set are includes, as well as numbers and symbols.

Hangman's Delight is a scratchy, all caps font. The upper case letters come with swirls and curls, but the lower case letters are unadorned. A bit of an unusual font, I admit, but it would look nice on book covers and posters. Comes with some ligatures and stylistic alternates and a whole bunch of diacritics.

Westmount is a geometric grotesque sans font that is both versatile and contemporary. The wide spacing between letters gives your text room to breathe and have the perfect amount of presence and balance. The strong capital letters are perfect for clean layouts and timeless branding. Try using Westmount Outline for a clean classic look.

This typeface is mostly composed of images of dinosaur skeletons drawn by Matthew Schenk and used as stencils for decoration. I thought they would also make a nice typeface. Check the key map—some of the very large critters are cut into pieces and put on several keys—this may help printing in some situations.

Two fonts entirely of decorative initials of which the uppercase basic letters of RMU Initials One are occupied by Walthari initials, the lowercase ones by Eckmann initials, both released first by Rudhard, '92sche Gie, 'dferei, Offenbach, Germany, about 1900. RMU Initials Two consists of Jubilaeumsinitialen in the uppercases and Augsburger Initialen in the lowercases.

Belvedere is an Italian word that translates as ‘beautiful outlook’ and describes a pavillion or summer house on high ground with commanding views. It has grace, style and a touch of class, all of which I've tried to incorporate in this font family. The snazzy graphics are by my friend and colleague Dan Austin.

A carefully drawn geometric typeface. Exacting angles are combined with smooth corner details to form a clean, legible font with a modern appearance. The compact nature of the letterforms allows for great use of space across text layouts. Details include 6 weights with italics, extended European & Cyrillic character set, manually edited kerning and Euro symbol.

Building a modular digital typeface is like playing with the pieces of a Lego. Possible combinations are induced by the shapes of the pieces. All designers must have tried something like this once. Bitmap is a simple unpretentious font. It is the first pixel font made by the Brazilian typeface designer Buggy in 2001.

Sirius B is a very lively display font. It can be used for book covers or posters, but would look rather dandy on T-shirts, mugs and other merchandise as well! Sirius B comes with alternates for all upper- and lowercase letters, has extensive language support and - lo and behold - all glyphs are interchangeable.

Ursula Handschrift is based on the designer’s handwriting. Individual characters are simple, soft and expressive; making it a friendly, organic script. It will work well in scrap-book style designs, comic books, for informal headings and image captions. Ursula Handschrift is extended, containing West European diacritics making it suitable for multilingual environments and publications.

The senden is a Cool Blackletter that has been in the making for months. There is a combined use of negative space to create contrast. Elements from High German, Old English, and many other styles are incorporated into this beautiful display font. The result is a manuscript that appears with a cleaner, more modern feel.

Doodle Pen is a whimsical hand-drawn typeface. Characters are based on ballpoint pen multi-line drawings creating a scribbled texture and soft edges. This typeface will work well for headings, short paragraphs and scrap-book style designs. Doodle Pen is extended, containing West European diacritics making it suitable for multilingual environments and publications.

Betula is the scientific name for Birch - I probably don’t have to explain that birches are my favourite trees! They always look like the ghosts of the forest with their papery white bark and dark blotches. Betula is a rough, crayon-like font. Very legible with a childlike appearance. Comes with a forest of diacritics.

Deck is a font inspired by old decks of playing cards and even some old tarot decks. Deck is an all caps font; the lower case letters and the punctuation are actually different playing card and tarot symbols like: hearts, diamonds, spaces, clubs. This font is great for designing your own deck of cards.
