Muisca, that in its early edition was named as «Muisca Sans», was developed in mid-1997 and based on the graphic concept of pre-Columbian characteristics figures within some of the very few visual elements recovered from the Muisca culture. This ancient pre-Columbian tribe disappeared since the arrival of the Spanish 500 years ago, in what is now the center of Colombia. In fact, the name of the capital Bogotá goes back to Bacatá as primary or village downtown of what was once the imperial capital of the Muisca tribe. This typographic project was submitted as my work for the degree in Graphic Design, obtained in September of that year (at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia), under the creative concept of vindicating the ancient culture and identity through a functional typeface, into a fact without precedent in the country. Muisca was recently edited, arranged and completed, including multilingual diacritic glyphs to be versatile in several languages. Related and inspired by Latin America, Ethnic, Native, Tribal, Mysthical, Handmade, Aboriginal, Pre-Hispanic, Pre-Columbian, Textured, Fantasy. When I released the original Organic in 2009, I was satisfied with it. It was what was possible from me and the technology at the time. The Organic Pro of 2021 takes those original desires of delivering a highly legible and friendly sans serif, and doubles down on those notions, while exploring what further infusing warmth in a highly structured sans serif can really do for a client. Free of distracting and potentially dating visual traits and cues that could be seen as endemic of a specific time period or ‘type trend’, Organic Pro is its own person—take it or leave it. Sterling Script was initially meant to a be digitization/reinterpretation of a copperplate script widely used during what effectively became the last decade of metal type: Stephenson Blake's Youthline, from 1952. The years from 1945 to 1960 saw a heightened demand for copperplate faces, due to post-war market optimism, as well as the banking and insurance industries booming like never before, which triggered the need for design elements that express formal elegance and luxury. The name Sterling Script is a tip of our hat to England, the Stephenson Blake foundry's country of origin. It is also a historical hint about copperplate scripts having been used mainly for banking and bonds in the 19th century. Originally we just wanted to resurrect a gorgeous metal type from the ashes of forgotten history. But after the main font was done we saw that the original s really needed an alternate. We made one. But we felt sorry for the original s and didn't want to see it dropped from use altogether, so we saved it by building a set of ligatures that solve the minor connection problem with the s at large sizes. Before the completion of the ligatures, a few different alternates were also drawn, and we were faced by the fact that the single font we set out to do was now a much larger set than we anticipated. While thinking about how to split up our unexpected bundle of large characters, we drew a few more alternates and some swashes. This abundance "problem" reached a certain point where there was no looking back, so we just decided to go all the way with this font. We added many more alternates, swashes, ligatures, and two full sets of each beginning and ending lowercase letter. The result is over 750 characters of sheer elegance. Sterling Script has many features that set it above and beyond other copperplate scripts: - It has 2 beginning and 2 ending alternates for every single lowercase character. The beginning and ending variants on the vowels are also available in accented form in the appropriate cells of the character map. - Sterling Script is the ultimate elegant font choice for luxury design. Very elegant, but not too soft. Its strong and confident shapes convey a message that is real, comforting and assuring. - One of the eventual purposes of expanding Sterling Script this extensively was to create a script that finds the middle ground between formal and informal without compromising either trait, a script where the degree of formality can be gauged, tweaked, cranked up or toned down depending on the layout's needs. Aside from beginnings and endings, there are multiple variations for the majority of the basic characters. This is a formal script on steroids, where twirls and swashes can be set to come out unexpectedly from any place in the word, which is great for reducing the inherent rigidity of words set in copperplate scripts and "humanizing" them whenever needed. This is especially useful for wedding, postcard and invitation design, where not every viewer of the collateral material has something to do with banking or insurance. - With such an extensive character set, a designer can easily set a word or a sentence in 10 or more different ways, and choose the perfect one for the task at hand. This is particularly useful for work where details are of utmost importance, like logos, slogans, or elegant engravings that consist of one to three words. Let those swashes and twirls intertwine for maximum elegance. Canadian designer Patrick Griffin made P22 Counter as an exercise in exploring the limits of counter-space and interchangeability between extremely geometric and standard calligraphic forms. Within a field of solid stems and horizontal strokes, parallel lines and curves play the role of counterparts to define square and round shapes, making what’s revealed just as interesting as what’s withheld. Deus is when type design is brought to extreme. It tries to answer the question whether you can design all glyphs in one axis of stress. It does not try to be all purpose, useful at all sizes, legible or readable and most of all it does not try to be neutral. It has its own style you either accept or not. Lightbox 21 is a radical update of my previous version of a geometric sans serif. The design of the original Lightbox was fundamentally based on the idea of incorporating the proportions of the ‘Golden Ratio’ into each letterform; Lightbox 21 greatly improves on this concept by entirely abandoning it. The result is a much more readable, ‘natural’ typeface that retains elements of the original without being bound to it. Overall, Lightbox 21 has been designed to convey that classic feel of a geometric sans that makes the genre so tremendously enduring and versatile, as well as providing an effortless sense of class to whatever they are applied. Several roads have been closed around my village, so I need to drive alongside narrow country roads ro get my groceries done. The roads are so narrow that two cars cannot pass, so you need to use the (muddy) kerbs. A lot of cars these days have Xenon lights and they shine really bright and blue. I am non xenon-phobic, but I can tell you that the ‘old’ yellowish headlight were softer on the eyes, especially when you’re trying to navigate narrow country roads! Yes, I know, a long story leading nowhere, but a little personal story (in my opinion) is better than a boring text full of technical bla bla. It's been said that creativity requires ten parts to perspiration to one part inspiration. But not always. According to its creator, Mira Vucko, ITC Needlescript was designed in one breath." An accomplished lettering artist, Vucko was sketching letters one afternoon. "I was using a calligraphy nib and was drawing the alphabet without much thought," she recalls. "When I allowed the down strokes of a couple of letters to fall below the baseline, I realized that I had created the impression of movement. I kept drawing letters in this fashion and did the same with horizontal lines. I added a firm ending to the descenders. Instead of dots above the 'i' and 'j,' I placed strokes in the opposite direction." In this way, the first characters that were to become ITC Needlescript emerged. The finished design is a lively, distinctive alphabet that produces a striking texture on the page. Letters intertwine and overlap to create a sense of movement and graphic intensity, especially when reversed out of a dark background. Vucko lives, works and was educated in Zagreb, Croatia. She lived in France and Sweden while in her twenties, but then returned to Croatia to work as a graphic designer for the country's largest newspaper. It was here that her passion for type and typography was born. Vucko has since gone on to become one of Croatia's leading graphic designers, and has won many awards for her advertising and packaging design. Vucko recommends that ITC Needlescript be used for "titling, lively but 'thorny' content, and anywhere that a little typographic drama is called for.""

Futura is THE prototype of a geometric or constructed linear sans serif and the font most commonly font of its kind used to date. Although being around for almost 90 years, Futura seems eternally young and fresh which also explains its continuous popularity with designers and typographers. Futura simply means efficiency and functionality documented by both its many usages as corporate type (e.g. Volkswagen, formerly IKEA, Vuitton, Shell, formerly HP, SMA and many more) as well as in various famous film projects (e.g. Kubrick, Anderson etc.). Futura’s iconic status was probably established when it walked on the moon with the Apollo 11 crew in 1969. It was used for the lettering of the plaque that was left up there.
