Pantoufle is French for slipper. Not the flipflop variety (or thongs if you’re from Australia), but the one you wear indoors when it’s cold. I have some too; Spanish ones, made from recycled PET bottles. Here in Holland, we call them ‘Pantoffels’ and you don’t have to be a language expert to see the resemblance between the French and the Dutch word. That is because the French are probably more savvy when it comes to keeping your feet warm and the Dutch just borrowed the word, pronunciation and all! Pantoufle is a font I made with a big fat marker pen. My kids had used it to decorate some gifts for Sinterklaas (if you want to know what Sinterklaas is, look it up). The British Vogue commissioned this typeface for their magazine re-design in 2001. After studying the originals of Morris Fuller Benton and the existing versions, this font was designed with all new thin weights. Just when the family was finished, Vogue informed that they had decided to use American Typewriter instead. Bastards. But here is a true classic typeface with a facelift. The pun intended. Harri –“stone” in Basque language– is a display font based on the peculiar letter forms used in signs and fascias all over the Basque Country. This idiosyncratic lettering style, very often used as an identity signifier, evolved from ancient inscriptions carved on gravestones which can still be found in the French part of the Basque Country (Behe Nafarroa, Lapurdi and Zuberoa).Harri takes some of its more significant features from those engraved letter forms, but also from the current overemphasized shapes derived from them, while keeping in sight their antecessors: the Romanesque inscriptions and ultimately the Roman Capitals. Gerard Unger once said “the black version of a font is a caricature of the regular”. I regard Sabio as an evolutionary face. By this I mean that it merges elements of script and Roman design into one elegant whole. The design was 'evolved' somewhere between these two classic approaches. The resulting family of faces makes an excellent display family, but is also clear and legible at small sizes and can be used as a text face with a distinctive flair. Sabio is a wonderfully flexible face that can sit happily alongside artwork that owes its inspiration to any era from the Art Deco onwards. The regular form is gently and subtly oblique, and the glyphs have a slight hint of swash about them. Alternate and perpendicular forms are also offered. The regular, alternate and perpendicular forms are all in turn offered in regular, and bold weights as well as in a condensed form. All in all Sabio is a humanist face with which almost anything can be done offering flair and elegance for almost any project. Bauhaus Bugler’s design never appeared in Harry Warren’s 6th grade class newsletter The Broadwater Bugler but its design came about during that same period in 1975. Because of this, it has been officially designated an honorary Bugler font! Its theme of broad curves that leap over and under conjure visions of fashion and high-end department stores with their dress boxes and shopping bags, plus hair products, cosmetics, couture, and other stylish personal merchandise of the highest caliber. Lagos was created because of the lack of African-inspired fonts that are truly modern without being partly art-deco in origin. I wanted to make a vigorous, sharp-edged font that reflects the energy and dynamism of modern Africa. The lines of the font combine the sharp angularity of African rocks and mountains with the smooth fluidity of Africa's snake-black rivers. The font is supplied in two styles, Lagos Regular and Lagos Light. Lagos Light is not a simple, mechanical modification of Lagos Regular. The outlines and proportions have been subtly modified to accommodate the lighter weight. Lagos contains a full 256 character set (upper and lower case, punctuation, diacritical characters, special symbols and numerals), in which all characters have been fully kerned and letter-spaced.

While watching the 1947 holiday classic “Miracle on 34th Street”, one scene in particular presented a chance to develop a retro type design. ‘Kris Kringle’ suggests to a mother visiting with her child in the Macy’s toy department to try Gimbel’s for a toy she couldn’t find at the store. The news of this behavior reaches Mr. Macy himself, who embraces the practice as a brilliant marketing strategy. A number of departments are then presented with reference books containing competitor ads, and the visual of the cover stating “R.H. Macy & Co. Shopping Guide for the Convenience of Our Customers” shows on screen. The thin, Art Deco sans serif monoline with a few serif-like hooks added onto some characters became the basis for Shopping Guide JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Bratislava is a rounded and elongated art deco typeface, based on several posters from the 1920's. Bratislava is slender and elegant and would look good on packaging and posters.

A little bit of thick-and-thin Art Deco hand lettering is offered up in Wonderful JNL, based on some promotional text found on an old piece of sheet music.
