A crispbake is a kind of cracker or rusk you eat for breakfast. At least, in Holland we do. They are called 'beschuit', they are round and they come in a pack of 13 (which is a baker's dozen). It turns out that this odd number of crispbakes in a pack comes from the fact that the ovens they were baked in held 13 crispbakes in a row and it was easier to pack them like that. So, should this question pop up during a game of trivial pursuit, you now know the answer! Crispbake font is a crunchy brush font. Completely handmade using a brush and Chinese ink. From the standpoint of calligraphy, a font family of capitals and uncials makes perfect sense. The Roman square capitals, the quadrata, are matched by round capitals of older Greek origin; the word "uncus" means hook-shaped like a beak or talon. Interrelated and often interchangeable, these capital letters served as book hands for both the Latin West and the Greek-speaking East before they evolved into minuscule alphabets. The Testament family is based on the few formal capital manuscripts of the Bible, Virgil and Homer that have survived from the ancient world. Throughout the Middle Ages both uncials and square capitals were used, often together, for headings and initial characters. By their nature the Roman capitals are the voice of Caesar and hold the place of authority, while the uncials speak for the Church in a balanced relationship. In ancient times church and state were not as separate as they are now, and the alphabets were not as different as typographic tradition has made them. In this calligraphic rendering it is clear that they are of the same substance and can be written in the same style, conveying even to the modern eye the eternal and classical quality of epic and scripture. Back in 2006 when we first released our Happy Holidays font, we thought the War on Christmas was over! We'd taken down our Menorahs, our Christmas trees, reclining Buddhas and red, black and green Kwanzaa decorations, and were prepared to sprinkle nothing more than a little Season's Greetings over our end of year celebrations. When we saw our friends and neighbors at department stores, we'd greet them with a simple, cordial, non-denominational “Happy Holidays.” But the font showed up at our company party this year having learned over 200 new languages (and, it must be said, a little bit loaded on Stylistic Alternates) in a mood to celebrate EVERYTHING. It was wishing people happy Bodhi Day, Solstice, Festivus, you name it! It even brought (count 'em) THREE new outfits based on the colors of Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. So may the designs on the cups of the hot beverages that take you through the long dark coffee break of the soul that stretches from Halloween to Thanksgiving to New Year's Day be a little more festive this year with the refreshed, Remastered, all-inclusive spirit of Happy Holidays!

Lionheart is the digitization and expansion of Saladin, a neo-gothic typeface designed by Friedrich Poppl, long after he established himself as one of the greatest German designers of all time with some of the most “ausgezeichnet” scripts and text faces to ever come out of Europe. This typeface, though lesser-known among Poppl’s other masterpieces, was one of the first in its genre to abandon blackletter influence and attempt letter variations based strictly on Roman alphabet shapes. Poppl’s idea spawned a whole generation of neo-gothics that can now be found on many a movie poster or book cover where the design must hint at secrets and dark sides. Lionheart succeeds with the idea of gradual curves leading to sharp concave or plano-concave terminals, to effectively build serious letter forms that speak of historical mystique and mystery. This font was was named after Richard I, King of England for a decade in the late 11th century. He reportedly exchanged many gifts of respect with Saladin, even though the two kings were on different sides of the Crusades. The two great technical constraints a type designer can tackle are low resolution, which limits detail and dictates proportions between negative and positive shapes, and uniform width, which restricts each letter to a fixed horizontal space. Wrestle with both at once, and each letter becomes a black-and-white chessboard that challenges every design decision. Sometimes battling these constraints gets in the way of a good idea, but other times, tinkering with fewer options can make the job irresistibly easy and lead straight to a grid addiction. Gridlite, an experiment with a modular negative space, is the side effect of such an addiction. It’s simplified, monospaced, and variable: foreground and background alike are ready to be animated, typed, scaled up, scaled down, rounded, or otherwise deformed. Escalope is a hand-drawn font with a quirky and unique personality: low midline, unicase, all-caps, matching icons, textures, and the playful Stylistic Sets. 'Escalope Soft' has smooth outlines and sharp terminals. 'Escalope Crust One' is relatively clean but rugged, with an ink stamp outcome. 'Escalope Crust Two' is harsh in texture, with large coarse grains in its jagged outlines. 'Escalope Crust Three' is rather heavy-built, stout, defined, and less grainy.
