Hand-drawn by an architectural renderer's daughter, Plinth is an craftsman-inspired font that leaves a strong and lasting impression. Both capital and lowercase letters have been designed for impacting display, but are also easily read in large blocks of text. Plinth includes multi-language support as well as a variety of OpenType features including decorative alternate caps, double-letter ligatures, complete fractions, currency figures, and 4 stylistic sets. Set One replaces commonly used titles (Mr., Mrs., Miss, Ms., and Dr.) with complementary hand-drawn versions. Set Two replaces 8 commonly used prepositions (and, the, to, to the, or, of, for and at) with complementary wordforms. Set Three seats counting contractions (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) in their proper superscript place. And Set Four provides a fancy alternate of both ampersand and asterisk. Freco is a celebration of the short but very productive life of Dutch designer and illustrator Fré Cohen (1903-1943). This font is mostly an assembled compilation of letters Fré created for a variety of print designs over the years, showcasing her consistent talent for the architectural moderne, art deco, and Wendingen styles of her era. Freco is a prime example of how seemingly minute details can visually be most relevant and consequential in typography. Fré Cohen's subtle variations on the familiar art deco forms and contrast have made her typographical work so stunning it continues to be taught and celebrated as some of the finest 20th century Dutch design. Freco comes in an expanded character set that includes support for Central and Eastern European languages, as well as Turkish, Baltic, Celtic, Maltese and Esperanto. Museum Borders and Ornaments is part of a typographical treasure, the Norstedts type collection in Sweden. Type designer Torbjörn Olsson has painstakingly translated the original 34 Ornament matrices in the collection to Open Type. Among them are several of Granjon's arabesques, as well as symbols from both Swedish and Danish typefoundries. The signs were cut in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The old Swedish name for these "type trademarks" were "rössjor". Museum Borders and Ornaments is an OpenType creation, for both PC and Mac. Swedish type foundry T4 premiere new fonts every month. The Ysobel™ typeface family is not only elegant; it is also exceptionally legible and space economical. A collaborative design effort between Robin Nicholas, as lead designer and project director, Delve Withrington and Alice Savoie of Monotype Imaging, the project had the primary design goal of creating a typeface family for setting text in newspapers and periodicals. The result, however, is also ideal for any application that requires quick and easy assimilation of text. According to Nicholas, “The idea for the design started when I was asked to develop a custom version of Century Schoolbook. I wanted to give the design a more contemporary feel, although the client ultimately decided to keep their typeface closer to the original. The project nevertheless gave me ideas for a new design. Since designing Nimrod, some 30 years ago, I had wanted to make a more modern typeface family for newspapers and magazines – this seemed the ideal candidate.” Ysobel (pronounced “Isabel”) has the soft, inviting letter shapes of Century Schoolbook but contrasts these with more incised serifs and terminals. Its capitals are also narrower than those of Century Schoolbook, and care was taken to ensure that they harmonize perfectly with the lowercase. Ysobel’s x-height is full-bodied without disrupting lowercase proportions. In addition, curved terminals, such as those in the “C,” “c” and “e,” were drawn more open as an aid to legibility and readability in text copy. Weight stress is near vertical, and hairlines are robust to ensure character fidelity in small point sizes. Development began with the text version of the family, which has four weights, each with an italic companion. All weights feature lining and old style numerals, fractions, superiors and extended Latin language coverage. Small caps are also available in the Roman Regular design. Ysobel Display is a completely redrawn version of the typeface; it is narrower, and has a slightly smaller x-height, thinner hairlines and subtle design changes to improve its appearance when set at large sizes. The Display Italic received particular attention to make it ideal for setting headlines, subheads and short blocks of copy. Changes include a slightly greater italic angle and more cursive treatment of some letter shapes. Alternative styles of capital “J” and “Q,” to provide variation, are available in all weights.
