One of my earliest memories of being able to write - an exciting skill - was of writing with my finger in the fine soft sea sand. I remember the freedom - I had no fear of making mistakes, of smudging ink or of doing anything wrong - and the ease with which I could write or wipe out any thing in the sand. Designing SandWriting was a tribute to those early memories. The font was an attempt to capture the simplicity and ease of a finger effortlessly making its mark in the sand. It can be used in many ways: in menus and invitations, in newsletters and advertisements, and in scrapbooks and brochures. It might be particularly useful for written material aimed at younger people. Even though the phrase Art Nouveau originated in Paris at the shop of Siegfried Bing, the French preferred to call it Le style moderne. This very sinuous, very Art Nouveau typeface was designed by an E. Mulier around 1894, probably also in Paris. The organic, vine-like curve forms are frequently seen in the art of the period. Examples include the architecture of Victor Horta, the furniture of Henry van de Velde and the jewelry of Max Gradl. Mulier Moderne is an all-cap font with a full Western European character set plus ST and TH ligatures, an alternate ‘E’ and two glyphs of period printer’s cuts. Warning: do not use for extended text. Duh!

Disco lives on in the alphabet stylings of Reardon AOE. The Roos family is a digitization and expansion of the last typeface designed by Sjoerd Hendrik De Roos, called De Roos Romein (and Cursief). It was designed and produced during the years of the second World War, and unveiled in the summer of 1947 to celebrate De Roos's 70th birthday. In 1948, the first fonts produced were used for a special edition of the Dutch Constitution on which Juliana took the oath during her inauguration as the Queen of the Netherlands. To this day this typeface is widely regarded as De Roos's best design, with one of the most beautiful italics ever drawn. In contrast with all his previous roman faces, which were based on the Jenson model, De Roos's last type recalls the letter forms of the Renaissance, specifically those of Claude Garamont from around 1530, but with a much refined and elegant treatment, with stems sloping towards the ascending, slightly cupped serifs, a tall and distinguished lowercase, and an economic width that really shines in the spectacular italic, which harmonizes extremely well with its roman partner. The Roos family contains romans, italics and small caps in regular, semibold and display weights, as well as a magnificent set of initial caps. Valet is deco moderne the way it was meant to be: Big, bold, classy, flashy, and clean at the seams. Its message is rich, strong, confident and reliable. Valet tells you that it’s used to thorns being part of every rose, that it can handle sharp objects just fine, and that it'd much prefer buying the tuxedo rather than renting it. This font grew out of an uncredited early 1970s all-cap film type called Expression. An appropriate deco lowercase was added, along with small caps, zippy titling caps, and Pan-European language support. With over 9250 glyphs, we bow our heads with the admission that we kind of got carried away with it.

1970’s Techno-typography finds its rebirth in Berkmire AOE. From its beefy weight to its narrow and sometimes unusual counter cuts, Berkmire AOE started as a digitization of a film typeface called Belden by LetterGraphics. This bulky techno typeface was taken from its limited character set and fleshed out to include an expanded language glyph set. The Capital letterforms seem to push the edge of readability, while the lowercase falls more in line. The letterforms of Berkmire AOE are easy to convert to paths and extend various stems, making this revival something you can really let your imagination run wild with for your designs.

Kairos is equal parts traditional and digital. Inspired by 19th century wood type fonts called Grecians, it’s an octagonal slab serif at its core. The serif detailing makes it radiate in headlines, with the square serifs driving its performance in text. The 51 weights and widths—all with small caps—offer a flexible and usable contemporary palette of styles perfect for branding, advertising and packaging. Kairos is stout, but has energy. Back in the nineties I had a deck of Tarot cards. It was part interest and part curiosity, but I also liked the look of them. My readings were just for fun; I thought it was all a joke, but when people started to return for more readings (because what I had predicted actually happened), I quit. That was way out of my comfort zone! Fortune Teller is a nice brush font. I made it with one of my late father in law’s Chinese brushes and ink. Slabserif Grotesk JNL was modeled from an example of a wood type design called Antique Light Face, and is available in both regular and oblique versions. The numerals (although an odd fit to the overall design) make this vintage font quite unusual and charming.
