DESCRIPTION With Skill I wanted to create something wild. Something that splashed the letters with life. To do this, I knew I'd have to break the barrier between analog and digital, so I took my best brush and started to play. Throughout the years as a type-designer I've met and become fan of many calligraphers. My belief that only a good calligrapher can make good typography (1) has become even stronger. I'm now absolutely sure that only practice improves the skill, especially in this field. So, with this in mind, I started a font which was a challenge for me because sometimes the gap between paper and screen can be gigantic. Skill is another of my attemps (2) to capture the spirit of the pointed brush, its expressiveness, the passions and fears of the artist. This font is about freedom. Freedom everywhere. Movement, velocity, passion. To achieve this, many alternates and ligatures per glyph were designed. Use it on magazines, posters, book covers, music albums, t-shirts, skates, tattoos. NOTES (1) This is mostly referred to script fonts, though text fonts made by designers with a deep calligraphic background have at least to me, an extra charm. (2) See my fonts Live and Indie. TIPS Thanks to Open-Type, the font gives the user the chance to play and get many wonderful results: In example, using the font with “discretionary ligatures” activated will give more life to the written word. Some letters will jump of the base, while others will ligate or not with the following (typical of gestural calligraphy). Adobe Illustrator is recommended. STYLES Skill is the most complete style. It has all the alternates and ligatures that can be seen in the posters and more! Skill Standard is a variant with no decorative glyphs. MAS AMOR POR FAVOR (1) (more love, please) Fluire means -to flow- in Italian and that’s what this font is all about. The story began when a friend of mine asked for a tattoo with the word -Fluir- (to flow in Spanish). She didn't want a tattoo full of swashes and swirls, like I'm used to doing, but something more fluent, soft and minimal. My very first attempts were more related to copperplate calligraphy but I wasn't even close: I discovered that I needed to forget a little bit about the classic contrast and speed of the engrosser's nib and started playing with a tiny flat metal nib. Letters started to flow, and I immediately thought of turning them into a font. Inspired by the tattoo I created and by other tattoos I saw, I started the journey of what would be a very fun process. The result is a very cute, almost monoline font with a wide range of uses. USES If not used for a tattoo (my first ‘target’), the font delivers amazing results in combination with Fluire Caps: These two need each other, they go together, they talk. I designed Fluire Caps Down and Fluire Caps Up so it’s easier to manage their colors. Also there’s Fluire Caps Down Lines, which has a decorative thin line to add yet another dimension. Use the fonts in magazines, book covers, posters, greeting cards, weddings, lettered walls, storefronts! TIPS Since the font is Open-Type programmed, I strongly recommend using it in applications that support that feature. Also, the font looks way better when -contextual alternates- are activated, but it’s your choice :) Try Fluire, and keep flowing. HS Almohandis is an Arabic display typeface. It is useful for book titles and graphic projects where a contemporary, streamlined look is desired. The font is based on the simple lines of modern and simplified Kufi calligraphy, that support Arabic, Persian and Urdu. This font was created in the beginning as regular weight with the font HS Alhandasi in 2007 for use in technical and engineering company. The company tends to follow the geometrical shape with equal dimensions in both vertical and horizontal storks. There is also a tendency to make all characters to be similar to oval shape with the impression that they are all geometrical and clear. I followed that with Bold weight in 2011. The difference between this font and HS Almohandis is that its characters have a sharp baseline.

Elettra is a completely new type, primarily designed for display or titling. As you can see, Elettra adopting a transitional style between the nineteenth century printing typefaces and the new fonts at the beginning of the twentieth century: in particular serif are elongated, but the oblique or round shapes continuing softly on the horizontal line instead of staying vertical. Furthermore, two more glyphs were designed for each capital letter: a swashed form, which tends to embrace the following letter, and a backswashed version, that instead embraces the previous. The swash version is accessible from swash or from stylistc set 01 OTF features, while the backswashed version is accessible from stylistc set 02 OTF feature. Be aware that the stylistic set OTF features are not available on Photoshop or Illustrator.

Rinzler AOE is a revival of a LetterGraphics film type called Caren. A modular, mechanical, sans-serif stencil all rolled up into one retro typeface. It's not an all-purpose typeface, it's not an everyday typeface, but it is a cool typeface for the right design projects. Rinzler AOE carries itself with a bold weighted style, and stencil cutouts that don't follow standard stencil formatting. It might be considered more of a techno stencil (if there is such a thing). It reminded me in a vague way of TRON, hence the main poster graphic styling, although it looks NOTHING like the Tron titling typeface. Nevertheless, it's a fun typeface that needed to be preserved and used again. WHAT'S INCLUDED: Extensive language support. One of my guilty pleasures is in taking the time to recreate historical typefaces as digital fonts, but a lot of incredible historical typestyles created as wood or metal or film type usually have bare bones character sets and have been lost or only exist as limited specimen proofs in old books. These typefaces may have more niché uses than modern typefaces, but I believe it is important nonetheless to preserve these typefaces for future generations. These typefaces, if nothing else, can often inspire new creations.

Circe Rounded is an extension for a popular Circe typeface, with rounded terminals. Bold and ExtraBold faces have two variants with different radius of the roundings. Circe Rounded is even more friendly than the original Circe. The typeface is designed by Alexandra Korolkova and Alexander Lubovenko and released by ParaType in 2015. It is known that the Circe typeface is distinguished by mild and humanist nature being formally a geometric sans-serif. However, as an experiment we decided to make it even softer: Circe now has a version with rounded terminals — Circe Rounded. Rounding is generally regarded as a mechanical operation, but in this case a lot of manual adjustment was needed because of the humanist nature and peculiarities of type design. Moreover, the two bold styles now have two options: a basic one is slightly rounded and an alternate one is fully rounded. In Circe Rounded we decided to dismiss characters with swashes that are rather inappropriate in such a rounded font, but the stylistic sets and alternate characters are remaining. Rounded terminals make an open and friendly typeface even more childish. For example, in quite large point sizes (because the x-height is still not big) it can be used as a body type in infant books. Circe Rounded, similar to Circe, has alternative forms of lowercase characters, which are called “infant” and are used in publications for children’s reading. However, a humanist basis is preserved alongside with its softness and it does not allow it to be as “plasticine” as many other rounded fonts. Two of the most obvious areas of possible application of Circe Rounded are everything for children and everything edible, especially all that is sweet and puff. However, we believe that there are other options.

The idea for Quirky was born while I was looking at a book of etchings by British artist Graham Clarke. His signature, crawling spider-like across the page, fascinated me with its casual, almost messy, inky dark and light drama. I started scribbling the alphabet as I imagined he would write it, based on his signature, then continued, adding curls, making the characters more angular, and refining the dramatic play between dark and light. Finally, Quirky appeared. Apparently casual, Quirky is, in fact, a true connected script. Quirky is characteristic of contemporary handwriting: It appears loose, angular, unstructured, and free, while maintaining good form and legibility. Its baseline is varied, creating an impression of impatient handwriting, without losing legibility. Classica Pro by Bernd Möllenstädt A real alternative for letterpress printing A masterpiece It was only after many years, shortly before the end of his life, Bernd Möllenstädt brought out these early drafts of his Classica Light and Light Italic from his drawer, and asked me to produce for him on the computer a Bold and Bold Italic, from which we later wanted to interpolate further cuts like Regular and so on. The boldening of letters with an oblique axis and with hairlines which should not grow to the same extent as the general line widths, is hard to cope with perfectly, even for the smartest computer program, and even more so, when it concerns an as complicated set of data as those conceived by Bernd. The automatically generated result could therefore only be a first step that had to be improved manually later. This was about the stage that we had reached when Bernd died in March 2013, leaving me behind with comprehensive corrections on proofs of this automatically generated Bold. Although I was aware that it would mean a lot of work to complete the project, I did not want to leave it unfinished and decided to finalize and publish the Classica, also in Bernd‘s honor. In the course of the two years that I worked on this font family it somewhat naturally became also my own. New details were added and some of the existing changed. A book typeface requires the supreme and forgives rarely, it represents a true masterpiece. My intention and my ambition were to create a real alternative for letterpress printing, with a font family that contains all the typographic options for an excellent typesetting, and is better readable and has a better appearance than other existing typefaces. Baldufa is a charming typeface with strong personality, which looks very comfortable in text. There is a search to obtain complicated curves and detailed features, which give the typeface a touch of beauty and elegance. However, this is also a self-conscious design that claims appreciation for quirkiness and human imperfection through the rounded serifs and irregular vertical stems.
