Now, insigne's new superfamily Madurai takes its popular predecessor to a new level, offering a wide range of complementary fonts. It was the original work of fifteenth century designer Nicolas Jenson that formed the basis for this roman serif style developed by Ernst Detterer in 1923. Similar in spirit to other early twentieth century revivals such as Centaur, Cloister Old Style, and Italian Old Style, Nicolas Jenson is distinguished by its pristine and delicate nature. A gifted young apprentice to Detterer, Robert Hunter Middleton, greatly expanded the family. And by 1929, bold, italic, and open were part of the Ludlow Foundry’s beautiful Nicolas Jenson Series. It was reintroduced under a new name, Eusebius, in 1941. This digital version includes a new medium and extrabold weight with intermediate small caps and swash alternates throughout the family. There is also a regular expert version with a variety of currency symbols plus a regular petite caps (regular x-height small caps) and old style figures version. Nicolas Jenson is now available in the OpenType Std format. Small caps, old style figures, and swash alternates have all been combined into one style for ease of use. You will also find an additional regular petite caps version included with the regular style. Some new characters have been added as stylistic alternates and historical forms. Volta is a robust typeface from the 1950s. A revisit to styles that were en vogue at the turn of the century, Bauer type foundry designers Walter Baum and Konrad Bauer designed this type family in1955. The form of Volta's letters are similar to those in New Transitional Serif typefaces, like Cheltenham and Century. Developed after the Didone (i.e., Bodoni) style types, New Transitional Serifs speak more to the zeitgeist of the late 19th Cntury, and were typographic adaptations to it's newer technologies. Already in the period of mass production, typographers and printers at the dawn of the 20th Century had to cope with larger print runs on cheaper materials. The robust letterforms of New Transitional Serifs were designed to compensate for this, but they were also ingenious little inventions in their own right. Form the beginning, the new, peculiar forms of New Transitional Serif letters were adopted for use by advertisers. Their robustness also allowed them to be used in virtually all sizes. Volta was designed especially with advertising display usage in mind. The x-height of Volta's letters is higher than average for serif faces. It is recommended that Volta be used exclusively for shorter tracks of text, above 12 point. Headlines look dashing set in Volta. Four different font styles are available for the Volta typeface: Regular, Medium, Medium Italic, and Bold."

Press Gothic is a revival of Aldo Novarese's Metropol typeface, released by Nebiolo in 1967 as a competitor to Stephenson Blake's Impact (designed by Goeffrey Lee). Though Metropol enjoyed a few short months of popularity and use in Italy, Germany and France, Impact won the technological outlasting battle by moving on to film type then to computer outlines bundled with mainstream software, while Metropol never made it past the metal state until now. Too bad really, since this is one of the few faces that could have played well with all the horrendous stretch'n'squeezing of the 1970s. Just like its inspiration, Press Gothic aims to be a fresh alternative to big economical poster fonts with clear sans serif forms and an urgent, strong, yet elegant design appeal. In the summer of 2008, Press Gothic underwent a major linguistic and aesthetic reworking for an international publishing company. The result of this on the retail side are new small capitals and biform/unicase additions to the main font, as well as expanded language support that includes Cyrillic, Greek, Turkish, Baltic, Central and Eastern European, Maltese, and Esperanto. Press Gothic Pro, the OpenType version, combines all three fonts into one, taking advantage of the small caps feature, and the stylistic alternate feature for the biform shapes.

The geometry of Paul Renner’s sans letterforms was tempered by optical correction to follow earlier typeface proportions, with capitals close to old-style forms, yet still retaining the spirit of the New Typography. His early experimental characters were included as alternatives in the sans which was to become the Futura released by Bauer in 1927–30. Unusually, old style figures also appeared in his early versions but they too were soon discarded. Foundry Architype Renner as a new four weight family has been developed from the original Renner Regular and Bold, created by The Foundry for the first Architype Collections in the early 1990s. This new family features the old style figures and the experimental elements.

LP Pinselschrift is a new brush handwriting script from German designer Peter Langpeter (lp-design.de). LP has been running his own design studio since 1995, working as a typeface and logo designer, as a calligrapher, cartographer and illustrator. During this time LP created a large number of excellent new typeface designs. Now, we are extremely happy that LP has chosen to let URW digitally produce and market his designs. LP Pinselschrift is the first LP original typeface of this series. It is a light, dynamic-flowing and modern brush script.

IronType (formerly known as Ironman) is an extra bold geometric titling face in the Art Deco poster tradition. A warm sense of strength and playfulness runs throughout this design. Triangular-shaped crossbars are some of its distinguishing characteristics. The face also contains some very amusing alternates. The tails of the alternate cap K and R extend below the line and the alternate cap N has a hump instead of a diagonal stroke. In the beginning of the 800s, during the reign of Carolus Magnus (or “Karolus”, as he signed himself), a great reformation of the written characters was conducted under the authority of Alcuin, Paul Diacre and Theodulfe. The new style, named “Caroline” script, was completely set up between 820 to 830. It was a regular script, with few ligatures, very legible, but only with lowercase. The capitals remained the old Romans ones. We have created the font to serve contemporary users, making a difference between U and V, and also between I and J, which had no relevance for ancient Latin scribes. We also added Thorn, Oslash, Lslash, W, and and the usual accented characters that did not exist at the time. Titlings (initial letters, without accents), historical and contextual alternates completes the set (in two separate files for MacOS9).
