Originally made for a health food store chain we cannot name, Pipa is the embodiment of organic display typography. Although it draws inspiration from some cold type ideas, like the uncredited Atlantis from VGC and a couple of older photo-lettering faces, its overall expression is right in line with what has become today's vernacular in integrity organic display packaging. Pipa's construct approaches the thick-and-thin idea from a rarely used perspective, where the flow in form contrast naturally seeps out from within each stroke, while minimizing the amount of strokes helps the totality of the setting come positively alive. This is bead and lava lamp psychedelia for the 21st century. Pipa comes with plenty of alternates, including some very cool unicase variations, and extended Latin language support.

Sam Suliman is a condensed display face supplied in three weights – Regular, Medium and Bold – plus a set of handy italics (obliques). All six fonts are included in the value family pack. The fonts are inspired by lowercase lettering on a Sarah Vaughan album cover designed by Sam Suliman in 1962, a style which contrasts sharp tight outer corners with soft rounded counters. The letters were perhaps influenced by a Solotype font called Herald Square, but without that font’s aversion to diagonals, and adding distinctive perky ascenders/descenders on the lowercase r, a, u, g and n. The Sam Suliman fonts also add the nubs to d, m, p, and q. Suliman was born in Manchester, England in 1927. After working for McCann Erikson in London, he moved to New York where he took on freelance work designing album covers, particularly celebrated are his striking minimalist designs for jazz records. He moved back to England in the early 1960s, designing many book jackets, film titles and fabrics, also working in Spain and India before settling in Oxford in the 1980s.

The Serious Damage font could be used for something dramatic as the font for a movie poster, featuring the next "earth will be destroyed by aliens" movie. But it is suitable for more than that! Birch was designed in 1990 by Kim Buker Chansler, who based her forms on the designs of the turn of the 20th century. The new age needed new typefaces for an ever-increasing commerce and its advertisements. This time period therefore saw a profusion of new typefaces, all of which were meant first and foremost to catch the eye of consumers. To this end, style elements of past ages were reused, changed, and combined. Birch is modelled after a woodtype, a style made famous by its use on wanted posters in western movies. The narrow and space-saving Birch is perfect for headlines in display point sizes.

BMX Radical is inspired by the titles of the cult 1980s BMX movie "Rad". The characters R, A and D were designed after this, with the rest of the character set being completely made up. The font is uppercase only, but with two different alphabets. In OpenType-capable applications, engaging contextual alternates will make the alphabets automatically switch between each other, meaning double letter combinations always contain two different glyphs to give the text a much more handmade feel. It is a very versatile brush font. It can look cheesy and retro in bright colors with outlines or gritty and modern in more muted palettes.

Inversion is a display typeface that is based on a rare bit of lettering from a 1910 German lettering book. What was the inspiration for designing the font? I found the base lettering years ago in a specimen and scanned it. I've used it perennially for assorted metal bands' logos, and finally decided to digitize it. What are its main characteristics and features? It is a spidery bit of lettering that would work well in Harry Potter movies or on album covers. Usage recommendations: Display type for use in materials that are meant to have a hand-wrought look circa the turn of the century.
