At one extreme we have a relaxed and casual approach to life that values the quality of each moment in life far more than people do in the west. In this approach each element of the font, while being part of a community, nevertheless stands on its own and has its own "character". Linotype Bix Plain, from Argentinian designer Victor Luis Garcia, is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the 1999 International Digital Type Design Contest for inclusion on the Take Type 3 CD. The font is composed exclusively of capital letters. The figures have constructed basic forms and show the influence of the advertisement types of the 1920s, with all their well-mannered details. The lower sections of the graceful letters are white and set against a black background, the upper sections are black on white. Once I had a young, very eager and interested designer in my employ. We got into talking about where our letterforms come from and the habits in perception we are used to. He did not quite believe me. So I said, let's try to design a typeface where everything is just the opposite of what we are used to. We really had a hard time, our habits crept up on us all the time. This font family was inspired by a visit to the Duxford Air Museum just outside of Cambridge, UK, where the whole history of aviation is represented in a series of exhibits ranging from early prop planes to supersonic jetliners. A personal calligraphic series commissioned by Bitstream from Gudrun Zapf von Hesse. Although Carmina BT is a neutral design, optimized for use in digital publishing, Zapf von Hesse’s unique calligraphic spirit is still quite visible in the family’s letterforms. This is not surprising, as all of Zapf von Hesse’s typefaces are calligraphic in nature. Yet Carmina BT is suitable for almost any conceivable digital text application, from book design up through signage use.

A revival of sorts, Freaky Frog BF is modeled after an 1887 design from Central Type Foundry, called Grimaldi. Much warmth and charm have been instilled into the original design through among other means, reworked contours and serifs.
