While designing a logotype for a client, she described herself as "loud and colorful." Thinking about some eras in typefaces that portrayed this idea, I instantly thought of the "Roaring 20s" and the Prohibition era where the cinema is starting to take off and the Italian mafia are running the bars. (Which is coincidental because my client has family connections to Al Capone.) One of the most iconic typefaces designed for these times was Broadway by Morris Fuller Benton in 1925. This typeface was the zeitgeist of Broadway, the big city, theater, and cinema, which can now be seen in use almost everywhere an old family run cinema is located. In the early 1960s, the German Master Printers’ Association requested that a new typeface be designed and produced in identical form on both Linotype and Monotype machines so that text and technical composition would match. Walter Cunz at Stempel responded by commissioning Jan Tschichold to design a new version of Claude Garamond’s serene and classical Roman. Its bold, and particularly its italic styles are limited by the requirements of Linotype casting machines, forcing the character widths of a given letter to match between styles, giving the italic its characteristic narrow f. The family’s name is taken from Jacques Sabon, who introduced Garamond’s Romans to Frankfurt. Sabon has long been a favorite of typographers for setting book text, due to its smooth texture, and in large part because Tschichold’s book typography remains world famous.

Chorus is a collective effort to sing in harmony. Similarly, each letter is designed to reflect harmony when used together to form a letter, sentence or paragraph. Letters like B, D, P and R have curved stroke (instead of straight line) while joining vertical stem. Letter K, k, and R have similar disjoint point in middle and unique plus stylish curve at foot. Letter C and G has distinct horizontal cut at top as compared to other letters in typeface e.g. S. Letter like b, h, m, n, and p have consistent stroke joint style with vertical stem. BILLIARD was born from the numerous sketches André Toet did for the design of a series of postage stamps in 2011. It’s a capital monospaced and ‘fun’ alphabet, based on the classic billiard play with two white and one red ball. Actually snooker and pool were derived from this rather old sport! In Europe it used to be a sport played by elderly people, practiced in traditional bars, including the smell of beer and the at that time prevalent smell of cigarettes and cigars. These days billiard, snooker and pool are quite popular once again with young people. Legan, created by PeGGO Fonts, is a typeface with a large number of glyphs. The uppercase letters follow the classical Trajan pattern. It is designed with several geometrical proportions such as root five, divine proportion (Golden Ratio), regular square, and others, just like the Greek Trajan letters used on Trajan’s Column. The major innovation is a lowercase that is designed in accordance with the same Trajan rules. My concern for the global community is reflected by the large number of diacritics I have provided, first on the basic alphabet, then on extended latin languages, as well as ones for Cyrillic and Greek.
