Alderney is a friendly font family in three weights, Light, Regular and Bold, designed by Stephen E Rowe for the foundry Fontelan. It is a gentle script crafted for more relaxed display needs, but, being oblique in character, it gives an air of excitement to many projects, especially in all caps situations. Unlike many scripts, the capitals can be successfully used as a great display option. All glyphs have a smooth curve and a broad, flowing, low aspect. Tabac Slab was created by combining several contradictory influences, the result of which is a universal linear font. The combination of brisk serifs and refined calligraphic details in the structure of the characters serves to create an original concept that mixes influences from both book and advertising graphics. Serifs aid legibility in long texts, while small drawn details realise their full potential in sizes of twenty-four points and larger. The basis for our Egyptienne was Tabac Sans, with which Slab logically forms a harmonic duo. The addition of bracket-less serifs caused the typeface to thicken and become solidly anchored on the lines, giving a firm answer to all typographers who like to complain about the slight exuberance of grotesque fonts.

Canterbury Old Style Pro is a two-weight serif font family with a small x-height. In 1920, Morris F. Benton designed the original weight for American Type Founders (ATF). Raymond Vatter and Steve Jackaman produced the digital version in 1992 and added a new “Bold” weight, and a full set of swash capitals were designed and released in 2003. Jackaman redrew and remastered the family in 2017, engineering the complete family into OpenType Pro format. Sans-Skript is a display typeface that is inspired by Javanese Script (or Sanskerta in Bahasa Indonesia). Javanese script is one of Indonesia’s many traditional scripts that were commonly used by Javanese people from mid-15th CE to mid-20th CE. Though not commonly used anymore, it is still taught and used in cities across East and Central Java. Sans-Skript translates the high-contrast, modular and organic features of the Javanese Script into the Latin alphabet. (Hence the not-script naming) The typeface is aimed to be used for large format prints, above 100 pt, and can be used alongside Javanese script. Typefaces that pair nicely mimic features of Javanese script, and Hatton by Pangram Pangram Foundry is an example.

Sackers Gothic is part of the larger Sackers series, a collection of fonts drawn from templates for producing engraved stationery and social cards by Gary Sackers, a Charlotte, North Carolina intaglio printer. Many typefaces were made from similar sources, including Monotype’s Engravers series, as well as Jim Spiece’s ITC Blair, and Mark van Bronkhorst’s Sweet Sans. Sackers’ typefaces, which were initially made into photo-set type, were digitized by Compugraphic and released in the late 1980s. Sackers Gothic has since become a popular choice for conveying sincere and plainspoken language on dust jackets, posters, and of course, in stationery. The face pairs well with display faces of a disparate nature, and serves as a ready foil for anything requiring an air of typographic sophistication.

Mido is designed with the aim to recreate all the power of the early 19h century slab serifs, but without their geometric monotony. The ambition was to make a humanist slab serif that would function both in smaller sizes, as headlines, and poster size. Careful attention has been payed to the spaces within and inbetween letters – they show slight irregularities to create dynamic negative spaces, which in turn makes the letters sit solidly together as words and sentences. Mido is suitable for packaging, posters, book covers, identities and headlines, as well as type set in smaller sizes. It comes with both upper- and lower case figures. The typeface Mido is an ongoing design project of which the first font is now released.

With Royale, Resistenza reinvented the bifurcated Tuscan genre in a contemporary, warm and playful form. Now our aim was to complete this decorative family with an italic version of the font. In 1952, Charles Peignot made a bold and fortuitous move: he invited a young Swiss designer to Paris to be the art director of the Deberny & Peignot type foundry. This started the professional type design career of Adrian Frutiger; and since then he has designed an astonishing range of masterful typefaces. One of the earliest for Deberny & Peignot was Président, a sharp-seriffed Latin titling face. Latin" is a typographic designation for roman typefaces with wedge or triangular-shaped serifs, a stylistic form that Frutiger would return to later with his beautiful typeface Méridien. Steelplate Gothic Pro is a sans serif font family with traditional and drop shadow weights. It shares letterform similarities to conventional Copperplate Gothic families, but has no spur serif endings. Most of the original designs came from the Western Type Foundry when BB&S acquired it in 1918; all were cut by Robert Wiebking. It was recast in 1954 by American Type Founders (ATF). Steve Jackaman (ITF) designed and produced a digital version of the original single weight in 1997. In 2017, Jackaman completely redrew and expanded the family, adding entirely new condensed variants and true small caps. Steelplate Gothic Pro has a masculine, industrial feel, and works effortlessly at display and subhead sizes. It shares letterforms with its sans serif sister family, Barnsley Gothic.

Bitstream Cooper was designed at Bitstream in 1986 by means of adding light, medium, and bold styles, with the corresponding italics, to the existing black ones. Based on Cooper Black, 1919, by Oswald Bruce Cooper, which was firstly released as a hand composition font in 1922 by Barnhart Brothers & Spindler of Chicago and later spread by ATF. Cooper Black is an extra bold face based on Cooper Old Style. Bitstream Cooper is an old style face with rounded serifs and tilted back ovals. For use both in text (normal weights) and in advertising and display typography (heavy weights). Cyrillic version was developed for ParaType in 2000 by Manvel Shmavonyan and based on TM Oswald face of TypeMarket, 1996, by Victoria Grigorenko.

Typeface designer and Letraset type director Colin Brignall created the font Romic. The character of the strokes as well as the serif forms give the font its calligraphic look. Novelty Script is a bold dynamic script, sharply delineated, yet fluid. Most of the lower case letters and many of the upper case letters have joins. The typeface was designed by Nicholas J. Werner and Gustave F. Schroeder and patented in March 1893. The original release was by the Central Type Foundry of St. Louis, Missouri. Although a part of ATF from 1892, the Central Type Foundry continued to operate under its own name until 1895. Novelty Script uses our new encoding, as noted in the All_customer_readme.txt. The Euro symbol has been moved to position 128 and the Zcaron/zcaron have been added at positions 142/158 respectively. Otherwise, Novelty Script has our usual idiosyncratic glyph selection, with the German ch/ck instead of braces, Western European accented letters, lower case “o” and “u” with Hungarian umlaut and our usual Hand-in-Hand symbol. But that is not all. With the takeover of the Central Type Foundry by ATF, a group of special characters appeared. All are included in this font, except the “&Co” and the "'s", for a total of nine in all. A FEW THOUGHTS Indie is a trendy script, result of the wide range of possibilities that can be achieved using a pointed brush. (1) “You Only Live Once” say The Strokes, (to me, symbols of indie music) so, what would represent that sensation of volatility better than a brush? As you may already know, this time inspiration came from hipsters and indies around us: We may sometimes criticise them, we may sometimes want to be like them, but the truth is that the universo gráfico they generated these past years is gigantic, full of colour and variations. (2) Brush lettering and Sign painting are fields I've been fond of since I started as a designer. Nowadays, these styles are getting a lot of attention and maybe it’s due to the undeniable mark of life that is materialised when using a brush. This tool is so expressive that shows the passions and fears of the artist, and materialises that idea of “living the present”, so popular in this era. When you see Indie, you think of skaters, rollers, surfers, hiphop dancers, street artists, summer, and why not? California beaches. So if you feel life is only one, it’s high time you got Indie into your fonts' collection! STYLES Indie comes in 4 styles plus another one which consists only in capitals. In spite of some particular cases, I can say I'm happy to live in a present in which Typography is living a kind of Renaissance along with Lettering. Like it happened with W. Morris a hundred years ago, handcrafts are being revalued/reborn, and some of this may be happening thanks to these indie designers that, trying to be unique, gave new/fresh air to different areas of graphic design.
