Plener is a type family of layered fonts available in four weights: Light, Regular, Bold, and Heavy. The properties of layered fonts are matched with the classical type family structure, which makes Plener specific. The letters have humanist origins, interpreted expressively with short brush strokes separated in layers. These humanist forms keep the text set in Plein Air surprisingly legible. Layer structure allows the user to play with colors and transparency, giving the text a more personal feel. Plener comes in two additional styles, made of layers from the Light and Heavy weight. These new, display styles, named Plener LLH and Plener LHH are separated from the main family. To make the work easier, we created basic fonts out of merged layers (for every weight and style). P22 Klauss Kursiv is the first ever digital revival and expansion of the last face Karl Klauß designed for the Genzsch & Heyse foundry in Stuttgart before he died in 1956. The Thief Bird is an informal grotesque font. Although informal and grotesque may seem to be two quite different ideas, we have to dig into the origin of this typeface in order to understand the matter. The concept behind The Thief Bird was inspired by the adaptation that the vintage sign painters made when they took the grotesque style characters they saw in newspapers and magazines and reproduced them using a brush, aiming to make the prices of the products displayed on wooden boards stand out, as opposed to highlighting large headlines (such as the idea behind fonts like Franklin Gothic). The Thief Bird takes the language from sign painters and turns it into a font --this time around not aiming to set prices but to bring children stories to life. Thus, some legibility features from grotesque fonts were mixed with the brush calligraphy to add grace and zest to a font intended for children. It's been said that creativity requires ten parts to perspiration to one part inspiration. But not always. According to its creator, Mira Vucko, ITC Needlescript was designed in one breath." An accomplished lettering artist, Vucko was sketching letters one afternoon. "I was using a calligraphy nib and was drawing the alphabet without much thought," she recalls. "When I allowed the down strokes of a couple of letters to fall below the baseline, I realized that I had created the impression of movement. I kept drawing letters in this fashion and did the same with horizontal lines. I added a firm ending to the descenders. Instead of dots above the 'i' and 'j,' I placed strokes in the opposite direction." In this way, the first characters that were to become ITC Needlescript emerged. The finished design is a lively, distinctive alphabet that produces a striking texture on the page. Letters intertwine and overlap to create a sense of movement and graphic intensity, especially when reversed out of a dark background. Vucko lives, works and was educated in Zagreb, Croatia. She lived in France and Sweden while in her twenties, but then returned to Croatia to work as a graphic designer for the country's largest newspaper. It was here that her passion for type and typography was born. Vucko has since gone on to become one of Croatia's leading graphic designers, and has won many awards for her advertising and packaging design. It was designed to be perfectly suited to all different sizes, from small continuous text to large headlines and big signage. The typeface’s name is derived from ‘a’ ‘cor’porate ‘de’sign typeface, however Acorde is not only suitable for corporate design programmes but for information design and editorial design purposes as well. Acorde’s inception was in early 2005 as Stefan Willerstorfer’s final project in the Type and Media course at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (NL). It is a humanist sans serif with noticeable diagonal contrast and shows clear influences of the broad nib pen, especially in the Italics. Acorde’s characterful details give it a distinctive appearance in large sizes and contribute to its high legibility in small sizes. It comes in 14 styles – seven weights in Roman and Italic each. Big News! Tenez has been selected for the Tipos Latinos Biennial 2016 and Typographica’s Favorite Typefaces of 2015! Tenez is a Grand Slam display didone typeface from Plau. We designed it for a branding project, further developing the resulting logotype into a typeface we felt could solve many designers’ needs. Its origins are rooted in pointed nib calligraphy which can be seen in contemporary Didot and Bodoni inspired typefaces. But Tenez’s shapes are organic (these modern typefaces were originally cut by hand after all) – in fact that was the challenge we set from the start: to make a typeface as organic in construction as possible. This echoes some of late 19th century typefaces and advertising, yet we thought of it for contemporary uses. One of the several unique features of Tenez is its unusual Thin weight, in which the contrast between thin strokes and the black area left by the serifs makes for a typewriter-like personality. The italics provide a perfect counterpoint to the roman weights. Tenez was unapologetically conceived as a display typeface meant to be used large as in magazine openings, drop caps or everywhere there’s a need for elegant impact. The family includes support for almost all Latin languages available, figure sets for almost every conceivable occasion (tables, text, you name it), alternates for the quirky beautiful R (sometimes simpler is better, but not always!) and Q (with a nice big tail for that article opener). Dolsáb was designed from scratch with uniqueness in mind. The subtle movement from thick to thin and the variants of sharp to rounded make this cutting edge san serif a must have. The inspiration for Dolsab was a simple pairing of a rhombus and calligraphy. While neither of those two elements can be seen in their entirety in any instance, the influence of both is strong. The rhombus can be notice on most ascenders like on the lowercase t & l, for example. And the calligraphy inspiration is most easily captured on the descenders such as the lowercase y & g. The most beautiful characteristics of Dolsab is definitely the calligraphy-influenced movement. These features really stand out on the lowercase a & e. It's almost amusing to let your eye follow the contours of those two letter forms as they travel from thick to thin, sharp to rounded and back again. Users are welcomed to try all font styles of Dolsab in any applique of their choosing. However, it will be quickly noticeable that only Dolsab Air & Demi (the thiner of the styles) will be best suited for body copy. Personally I like to see these letterforms as large as they can be to really showcase the subtle movement, especially in Dolsab Heavy where these movements become much more dramatic. You'll never know what really works best unless you experiment. Dolsab surely isn't the answer to all projects, but it's certainly worth trying. No other typeface moves quite like Dolsáb.

Satero was designed by Prof. Werner Schneider in 2007. Never before have we had so much written material to consume; this is the age of mass-communication. Unfortunately, the decision of which typeface to use is too often made lightly. The typeface is one of the most elementary means of language, and it can play a major role in a text's legibility and the amount of time the reader needs for it. The Satero Type System offers a high degree of legibility due to its dynamic and forms. The individual characters have been based on classical concepts. They are clearly made, and leave all unnecessary elements behind. The type works to create an environment of extreme legibility. Essential parts of the a, c, e, s, and r are to be found at the x-height line, which is the most important area of a line of text in determining legibility. The Satero Type System includes two members whose basic forms are the same. The Sans Serif members are more horizontally differentiated than common grotesques, which aides their legibility. The Serif design employs asymmetrical serifs, avoiding elephant feet" altogether. Their dynamic is progressive. The condensed nature of the seriffed counterparts is optimal for newspaper and magazine applications, where space is at a premium and paper must be saved. Hanna has its roots in the Plato and Cilantro fonts published earlier by Wilton Foundry. It is an informal roman and very legible at any size - a rare combination for many applications. She is an amazing lady with a deep passion for orphan kids as well as innocent kids that find themselves in jail because their mothers have been imprisoned - they are treated as prisoners and are typically sexually abused - it is not uncommon for them to commit suicide when they are released from jail at age 18. Most of the orphans end up with Hanna because one or both of their parents have died from AIDS. Hanna relies entirely on donations to keep her orphanage running and this font is a small but tangible way for you to help make a difference in the lives of the orphan kids. I am committed to helping Hanna after visiting the orphanage several times and seeing the jails from where the kids have been rescued. Hanna is my hero because she stepped out of her comfort zone, with no financial support, to take care of the kids. My hope is that you will use this font as a messenger of good. Merengue Script is the second typeface designed by Panco, once again together with Ale Paul, who supervised the whole development. In this opportunity, the process of shape research and the systematization of signs led him to dive into new waters. The objective was to generate a system of signs in which the construction of such was not directly bound to traditional calligraphy, nor to texts typography. Instead, the point was to create signs inspired in “Brush pen” calligraphy but with their main features drawn or literally illustrated. The result was a font with personality, authenticity and uncommon formal aspects that make Merengue Script an interesting, highly attractive and rather unusual font. From the very beginning, the search was based on creating a font with weight and good presence in big formats, but, at the same time, efficient for brief texts of small formats. Aviano returns to lend its classic line to its newest variation, Aviano Royale--named so because of the rich flow the calligraphic capitals give the established font. The extended lowercase characters give an air of formality to the face as well and bestow on the family a deeper sense of wealth and power. This recent development of a timeless font, part of insigne’s annual tradition of adding to the Aviano family, was elected the clear winner in a poll of insigne design’s social media followers. Linotype Univers is a completely reworked version of the original Univers typeface family designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1957. By following Frutiger's original designs, the humanist character of the sans serif Univers now comes through more distinctly. The systemized numbering system has also been updated. With its sturdy, clean forms Univers can facilitate an expression of cool elegance and rational competence. In fact, the strong familial relationships between all the styles and weights make it a serviceable choice for large graphic design projects that require versatility with consistency. Frutiger was successful in staying true to his initial aims; the new Linotype Univers does indeed work in longer texts as well as for display settings. We are very happy to announce the release of our first collaboration with master calligrapher, designer and illustrator Gabriel Martínez Meave from México. The first in the series of new designs is Wordless Script, an emotional calligraphic typeface published by Sudtipos. Speechless. Breathless. Wordless. There are letters that transcend simple functionality and sheer legibility, to be recognized instead by their style, their charm, their emotion. It’s like when we don’t remember the exact sentences, but we recall the tone of the voice of a loved one: it just doesn’t matter WHAT he or she said, but HOW he or she said it. Wordless Script is the font of choice for writing those things that go beyond words. Based on the connected-scripts of late 18th-century England, this typeface preserves the irregular finish and gestural strokes of the pointed nib. It is, so to speak, a personal rendition of the English roundhand as originally executed with the bird’s quill. Imbued with a Rococo, neoclassical, romantic spirit, Wordless radiates the gallantry of a time when the celebrated «douceur de vivre» that Talleyrand was so fond of was still alive and well; echoes of which still haunt us in our eclectic 21st-century, which has once again come to appreciate these magnificent styles of old. Blacker Pro is the revised and extended version of the original wedge serif type family designed by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini and Andrea Tartarelli in 2017. Blacker was developed as a take on the style that Jeremiah Shoaf has defined as the "evil serif" genre: typefaces with high contrast, oldstyle or modern serif proportions and sharp, blade-like triangular serifs. Due to the high contrast in the design - slightly reminescent of didone typefaces - Blacker has been developed in two optical subfamilies. The display version offers tighter tracking, higher contrast and sharper corners for maximum effect at big sizes, while the text variant offers better readability and screen rendering at smaller sizes, with lower contrast and looser spacing. In the pro version, two additional condensed variant families have been added (condensed display and condensed text) allowing for more freedom and versatility in typesetting where space constraints are present. Also, three titling uppercase-only variants have been added, with a slightly extended feel, and two decorative subfamilies (inline and diamond). Each of these seven variants has been developed in six weights from light to heavy, with matching italics, for a total of 69 styles covering a wide range of editorial and advertising uses. All Blacker Pro feature a revised and extended character set covering over two hundred languages using the latin, cyrillic and greek alphabets. Open type features include small caps, positional numerals, fractions, superior & inferior figures, alternate forms, and an extended set of standard and discretionary ligatures. ☞ Bona Nova is a collective revival project of Bona typeface designed in 1971 by the author of polish banknotes Andrzej Heidrich. Besides giving the project a digital font form the aim was to expand the base character set: preparation of small caps, designing the alternative glyphs and multiple opentype features. Working together with the author we designed two new text versions: regular and bold – to give the family a form of a classic script triad. ☞ It is accompanied by three title versions and three contour styles under the name of Bona Sforza. All styles contains over 1200 glyphs. ☞ Bona Nova is an unprecedented typographic adventure for our team. We hope that our work will allow the cultural heritage of Bona and the work of Andrzeja Heidricha to gain new followers and fans. This project connected three generations of graphic designers who graduated the same school – the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. ☞ Bona Nova isn’t only a typeface. We have also prepared a book about the project (including an interview with Andrzej Heidrich, my text about the digitalisation and a font specimen). Taca is a typeface built around a shape that Portuguese designer Rúben R Dias calls a “squircle” — neither square nor circle. We usually associate the rounded, convex box with the television screens of the 1960s and Aldo Novarese’s classic typeface, Eurostile. But whereas Eurostile is cold and machined, Taca is warm and rugged, as if it was molded from clay or carved from stone. Taca’s organic nature is also derived from another unique feature: rounded crotches at the right angles where perpendicular strokes meet. This subtle finish, along with blunt stroke endings, softens the otherwise rigid skeleton. With such a strong conceptual vision, Taca could be relegated to the bin of experimental designs, severely limited in their application. But that fate is usually born of a less experienced maker. As a teacher, designer, and letterpress printer, Dias is a type user, keenly aware of the functional requirements of good type. Taca is therefore not a slave to its concept, but a working font family, effective in various sizes and environments. Its lettershapes break away from the base shape whenever it makes sense for legibility, while still maintaining the flavor of the design as a whole. That said, a set of squircle-shaped alternates give the user the flexibility to get more stylized if the situation calls for it. Fitting to its functional aims, Taca has many of the features one expects of a proper text font: upper and lowercase figures, case-sensitive punctuation, and Extended Latin language support. The simplicity, openness, and squareness of Taca’s forms also make it an ideal design for the pixel grid of screen displays.
