Pekin is an unusual design with an oriental flavor. It was originally designed by Ernst Lauschke and released by The Great Western Type Foundry of Chicago as “Dormer,” which is similar to the French verb ‘to sleep,’ not exactly a marketing triumph. Barnhart Bros. And Spindler (independently-operated subsidiary of ATF since 1911) bought Great Western in 1918. According to McGrew, AMERICAN METAL TYPEFACES of the TWENTIETH CENTURY, BB&S renamed the typeface prior printing their 1925 specimen book — guess they wanted something just a tad more exciting. Quirky, distinctive and fun. Pekin ML represents a major extension of the original release, with the following changes: 1. Added glyphs for the 1250 Central Europe, the 1252 Turkish and the 1257 Baltic Code Pages. Added glyphs to complete standard 1252 Western Europe Code Page. The alternate c is actually the original design, but I don't like it - easily confused with e. Alt E H M h m n r t are from the original design. I added the rest. 8. 7 Ligatures, 4 Ornaments, 18 Geometric Shapes, 6 Arrows and 12 Misc. Symbols. The zip package includes two versions of the font at no extra charge. There is an OTF version which is in Open PS (Post Script Type 1) format and a TTF version which is in Open TT (True Type)format. Use whichever works best for your applications.

Infidel is based upon letterforms from the Lindisfarne Gospels and other manuscripts and bibles from across the Middle Ages. These are wonderfully idiosyncratic forms; some beautiful, others unsightly, but all far away from what we recognise as legible letterforms, today.

Birch was designed in 1990 by Kim Buker Chansler, who based her forms on the designs of the turn of the 20th century. The new age needed new typefaces for an ever-increasing commerce and its advertisements. This time period therefore saw a profusion of new typefaces, all of which were meant first and foremost to catch the eye of consumers. To this end, style elements of past ages were reused, changed, and combined. Birch is modelled after a woodtype, a style made famous by its use on wanted posters in western movies. The narrow and space-saving Birch is perfect for headlines in display point sizes.

Named after the strong cold winds on Southern France, the Mistral font family is another original creation displaying the panache of the French graphic artist Roger Excoffon. Mistral is an informal script in which all letters link up in vigorous strokes. First issued in 1953, its brush-like stems look spontaneous and fresh. The descenders are fairly long and the whole alphabet has a distinctive and unforgettable effect on the page. Mistral is a good complement to sans serif typefaces. Mistral is a trademark of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, which may be registered in certain jurisdictions, exclusively licensed through Linotype Library GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG.

After the death of Uther Pendragon, long before Arthur was King of the Britons and before Galahad was destined to find the Holy Grail, the mighty sword Excalibur appeared, thrust into a Stone bearing the inscription; “Whosoever Pulleth Out This Sword of this Stone and Anvil, is Rightwise King Born of England!” While no champion worthy of becoming king was able to pull the sword, England was plunged into the Dark Ages... the legend on the stone aged, and became cracked and weathered... much as one might find on your stone tablet, ipad or mobile device. From the standpoint of calligraphy, a font family of capitals and uncials makes perfect sense. The Roman square capitals, the quadrata, are matched by round capitals of older Greek origin; the word "uncus" means hook-shaped like a beak or talon. Interrelated and often interchangeable, these capital letters served as book hands for both the Latin West and the Greek-speaking East before they evolved into minuscule alphabets. The Testament family is based on the few formal capital manuscripts of the Bible, Virgil and Homer that have survived from the ancient world. Throughout the Middle Ages both uncials and square capitals were used, often together, for headings and initial characters. By their nature the Roman capitals are the voice of Caesar and hold the place of authority, while the uncials speak for the Church in a balanced relationship. In ancient times church and state were not as separate as they are now, and the alphabets were not as different as typographic tradition has made them. In this calligraphic rendering it is clear that they are of the same substance and can be written in the same style, conveying even to the modern eye the eternal and classical quality of epic and scripture. Testament comes in all popular font formats, and includes support for a vaster-than-usual range of Latin-based languages.

Stack brings the spirit of industrial chimney lettering from the early twentieth century to the digital age. The typeface is designed to work both horizontally and vertically. Additionally, the fonts can work together in myriad chromatic expressions—providing limitless design possibilities. The family is true to the spirit of masonry lettering without being a direct lift of any specific lettering style from the industrial age. Like some of its masonry predecessors Stack is built as a typeface of 15 courses (horizontal rows) of ‘bricks.’ Based on several years of research a collection of 150+ photographs and roughly two dozen archival engineering drawings were amassed. The value of the historical references is a type family that is a legitimate reflection of masonry lettering styles of the period. In updating Stack for the digital age, the proportions of the base-unit ‘bricks’ and the thickness of ‘mortar’ joints have been optically adjusted to work in both screen-based and print media. Stack would not have been possible without the research and design input from Craig Welsh and Jenna Flickinger of GoWelsh.
