Although this condensed type is ideal for titles and headlines, it has small caps and letters with diacritical marks included as well. This font was designed with scholastic visuals in mind. Whether advertising for a school event, or creating handwriting worksheets for young children, this font covers all the basics with Latin alphabet languages. A British boxing film from 1953 called “The Square Ring” had its titles and credits hand lettered in a slab serif type style commonly referred to as “Egyptian”. While working on a font based on Spencerian Script (a popular late 19th century handwriting style) we did some experimenting with original designs which created the general feel of Spencerian and brought to mind the spidery handwriting of old ladies and Dickensian clerks. The result was Arakne, a spidery script font with a really striking look.

Jeff Levine's Eckhardt Inline JNL furthers a "mini series" of fonts and lettering styles popularized by sign painters and show card writers. Named in honor of the late Albert Eckhart, Jr. (owner of Allied Signs in Miami, Florida until his passing), this inline sans serif more closely resembles hand lettering than "perfectly designed" display type. Ramston is a humanist sans serif typeface of 20 fonts in total — a normal and a condensed width in 5 weights with matching italics. Alf R. Becker was a noted sign painter, designer and the creator of hundreds of unique alphabets which were published in the trade magazine Signs of the Times during the 1930s through the 1950s. Thanks to Tod Swormstedt of ST Media [and who is also the curator of the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati], Jeff Levine received some reference material on Becker's work. Becker displayed many of his type styles within decorative panels—a popular trend in the days when signs were hand-lettered. Using the reference material as a guide, Jeff has re-drawn twenty-six sign panels for adaptation to digital print work. While the designs in themselves are not thoroughly unique to Alf Becker, he has left behind some tangible examples of how sign painters embellished their lettering work. With the use of complementary colors and tones, these panels—joined with vintage lettering - classically recreate the warm and attractive advertising of years ago.

Birka is the first typeface I designed from scratch. It took a whole year of my weekend and evening hours and is the typeface that teached me everything I know about type design. It is easy too see that I had Garamond in mind when drawing it. Birka is beautiful" was the comment of the well known Swedish designer Bo Berndal when he first saw it. That comment gave me the courage to design more and more typefaces. In a Danish article about Scandinavian type design, Birka was taken as example of a typical Swedishness in typography. I am not sure what the writer had in mind, but it surely sounded well. Birka has its name from the ancient Viking town Birka, whose remains are found not far away from Stockholm. Birka was released in 1992."
