New Age Gothic is an original design by Alex Kaczun. It is a contemporary gothic design based on generous proportions and clean crisp lines. Ideally suited for easy reading and long lines of copy. The concept for the design came from a previously successful font family Contax Pro. Alex felt that the skeleton for Contax Pro was ideally suited to modify the design into a true gothic companion typeface series. Numerous modifications where made to the body proportions, stems and shapes. Serifs where added reminiscent to Copperplate Gothic to solidify the overall design. The result is a truly unique modern gothic font. Unlike other typefaces, New Age Gothic incorporates uniform stems throughout the capitals, lower case and figures. This gives the design a uniform appearance in overall color and strength. There is a perfect visual balance between inter-letter spacing, stem weights and proportions. Dearest is a distinct flowing script based on handwritten characters found in a 19th Century German book chronicling a history of the Middle Ages. Chet was inspired by the lettering on the signs of American diners and gas stations in the 1950s and 60s. It is not a mere reprint of nostalgic signage letters, however. Havel is an updated interpretation of a Czech type design from the 1930s. It is powerful and very condensed. At a quick glance you might find kinship with other condensed typefaces of the same period, like Spire (Sol Hess, 1937), Onyx (Gerry Powell for ATF, 1937) or Quirinus Bold (Alessandro Butti, 1939). But Havel has its very own look, rooted in the rapidly disappearing "Eastern European Type", a typographical tradition where poster and packaging design were the highlights. The font is a non-connecting upright handwriting script based on 16th century sources with a lineage going back to Robert Granjon in France and from early Dutch type specimens from the Enschede and Sons Foundry.
