Classic Grotesque by Rod McDonald: a traditional font with a modern face. The growing popularity of grotesque typefaces meant that many new sans serif analogues were published in the early 20th century. Setting machines were not compatible with each other but all foundries wanted to offer up-to-date fonts, and as a result numerous different typeface families appeared that seem almost identical at first glance and yet go their separate ways with regard to details. One of the first fonts created with automatic typesetting in mind was Monotype Grotesque®. Although this typeface that was designed and published by Frank Hinman Pierpont in 1926 has since been digitalised, it has never achieved the status of other grotesque fonts of this period. But Monotype Grotesque was always one of designer Rod McDonald’s favourites, and he was overjoyed when he finally got the go-ahead from Monotype in 2008 to update this “hidden treasure”. The design process lasted four years, with regular interruptions due to the need to complete projects for other clients. In retrospect, McDonald admits that he had no idea at the beginning of just how challenging and complex a task it would be to create Classic Grotesque™. It took him considerable time before he found the right approach. In his initial drafts, he tried to develop Monotype Grotesque only to find that the result was almost identical with Arial®, a typeface that is also derived in many respects from Monotype Grotesque. It was only when he went back a stage, and incorporated elements of Bauer Font’s Venus™ and Ideal Grotesk by the Julius Klinkhardt foundry into the design process, that he found the way forward. Both these typefaces had served as the original inspiration for Monotype Grotesque. The name says it all: Classic Grotesque has all the attributes of the early grotesque fonts of the 20th century: The slightly artificial nature gives the characters a formal appearance. There are very few and only minor variations in line width. The tittles of the ‘i’ and ‘j’, the umlaut diacritic and other diacritic marks are rectangular. Interestingly, it is among the uppercase letters that certain variations from the standard pattern can be found, and it is these that enliven the typeface. Hence the horizontal bars of the “E”, “F” and “L” have bevelled terminals. The chamfered terminal of the bow of the “J” has a particular flamboyance, while the slightly curved descender of the “Q” provides for additional dynamism. The character alternatives available through the OpenType option provide the designer with a wealth of opportunities. These include a closed “a”, a double-counter “g” and an “e” in which the transverse bar deviates slightly from the horizontal. The seven different weights also extend the scope of uses of Classic Grotesque. These range from the delicate Light to the super thick Extrabold. There are genuine italic versions of each weight; these are not only slightly narrower than their counterparts, but also have variant shapes. The “a” is closed, the “f” has a semi-descender while the “e” is rounded. Its neutral appearance and excellent features mean that Classic Grotesque is suitable for use in nearly all imaginable applications. Even during the design phase, McDonald used his new font to set books and in promotional projects. However, he would be pleased to learn of possible applications that he himself has not yet considered. Classic Grotesque, which has its own individual character despite its neutral and restrained appearance, is the ideal partner for your print and web project.

I sketched each letter of the font very scrupulously from scratch. Each letter is uniquely designed and has a unique flower pattern in the background. Here you go...a handmade sans font without much of surprise...actually, this is how I draw letters with my eyes closed...well, almost! I wanted to make a font with letters that were pretty obvious, but had that handmade look that I love so much. The result is this really painless font - it won't hurt or scare anyone, but it could help making your handmade things (such as posters, postcards, flyers, books and alike) come more alive! Anyway, I've added 3 different versions of each lowercase letter...just to add some spice to the painlessness of the font!

Morning News is the sister font of Evening News which I designed some years ago for use with my local newspaper Abendzeitung. Morning News is an adaption, a little bit rounder, which gives the font a much softer touch. The general design dates back to the pre-Hitler era, the time when Germany had already lost the first World War and was taking a short deadly breath to start the second big war. Lets hope there will be a day when there will never be another war in Europe (or elsewhere!). Another new peaceful font by your pacifistic designer, Gert Wiescher.

Karol was designed in 2011 as a project in the MA in Advanced Typography from EINA/UAB, in Barcelona. It was born as text typeface inspired by the work of East European type designers. Two years later, Karol is ready for public release, in a collection of eight styles (four weights and matching italics) with high readability, strength and character. A few days before its publication, we received the news that Karol had been awarded the Certificate of Typographic Excellence (Judges’ Choice) of the Type Directors Club. Linotype Beluga is a part of the Take Type Library, winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. The font was designed by Hans-Jürgen Ellenberger to suggest the writing of the Middle Ages but without any specific models from that time. A distinguishing characteristic of the font is its pointed, effusive serifs, which give Beluga its feel of the Middle Ages or of mysticism. In spite of its dynamic character, Beluga is legible even in smaller point sizes, which makes it equally good for headlines as for shorter texts. Beluga combines well with sans serif, slab serif and constructed fonts.

Mainsail is a handwritten brush script font. It is casually written with dry brush pen, so it has this nice texture and flow. Mainsail has lots of alternates to make it look more like real handwriting; four sets of lower cases and two sets of upper cases. Mainsail is great option for logos, headlines and packaging. You can also use it in longer texts where you need this casual handwritten look. It will also combine well with sans and serif fonts. Mainsail has OpenType features that automatically makes text look more authentic. Discretionary Ligatures replaces other of two identical letters following each other. Contextual Alternates will unleash the full cycle of the alternates. It will cycle all four lower case sets to make the text look as natural as possible. Mainsail has also underline strokes in separate font called Mainsail Swash. It includes combined 52 different underlines, strokes and circles. With these you can add the final punch to your design.

Core Escher is an optical illusion type family which has two sub-families: Core Escher A and B. Core Escher A has impossible shapes inspired by the optical illusion works of artist M.C. Escher. The letterforms in this type family are structurally twisted and complicated but it looks simple because of its simple strokes. And for easy color variations, it split into two fonts, Core Escher A Left and Right. Core Escher B has a different kind of optical illusion. The letters of Core Escher B look like three dimentions by just putting thin lines on bold letters. Also B has two sub-families that have different viewpoints. Core Escher Family supports complete Basic Latin, Cyrillic, Central European, Turkish, Baltic character sets. Each font includes proportional figures, tabular figures, numerators, denominators, superscript, scientific inferiors, subscript, fractions and case features. Lifeform is a modern display font created as a result of my experiments on the forms of letters. While working on the font, I had ambivalent feelings, on the one hand I liked the individual curved lines, on the other hand they seemed very strange, alien and illogical. It was like looking into a microscope and seeing something strange. I wanted to develop and study these forms as something new, because I had never seen anything similar before. The result is a contrasting font that has both curves and sharp, and smooth lines that resemble some kind of organic matter. The font is well suited for large headlines, posters and covers. A page from an 1880s type specimen book presented a unique "Barnum"-like design with top horizontal lines much thinner than the bottom ones. Titled "Ten Line Antique Compressed No. 7", the design transcends the years; for it's not only an antique wood type font, but is also reminiscent of the 1960s hippie counterculture movement. The idea of symmetry came to me when I was lookig for a geometric sans font. None of the things that I found did have the mathematically perfect symmetry. So, I went ahead and created one. I have used complex mathematical equations to get the perfect angle in every letter. Diameter comes with two styles square corner and rounded corner, each with regular and bold weights.

Abdo Line is a simple Naskh font for books and magazines. Accurate design and clarity of reading and writing space-saving, it comes in sixth weights: Thin, Light, Regular, Bold, Heavy and Black.
