Linotype Merlin is part of the Take Type Library, which features the winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest from 1994 to 1997. This font was designed by Anne Boskamp and its alphabet consists exclusively of capital letters. At the same time aggressive and sensitive, Merlin looks as though it were scratched onto paper with a pen tip saturated with ink. Like characters from another time, the letters fall into place and make an impression which is both vulnerable and strong, lively and reserved. Bannock Brae Gothic is a sans serif typeface. It is an original creation of Steve Jackaman (ITF) and was created for the Red Rooster Collection in 1999. The typeface was loosely inspired by a typeface from an old obscure wood type specimen book from the turn of the 20th century. Due to its turn-of-the-century roots, Bannock Brae Gothic has an informal 1920’s art deco look. Initially inspired by an untitled typeface from an old hand-lettering book, Berber has been extensively developed over two incarnations to function as a very strong and confident sans. The 2011 Berber revisions have enabled Berber to be used across longer settings as well as its more conventional use on larger applications such as signage. Berber was used as the text face for issue 46 of Eye, the graphic design journal. The typeface now features both king caps and small caps. So we have done the labor of the processual, modulate by consequence and not by option, born with autonomy and authority. The hand lettered word ‘puzzles’ from the box cover of a 1940s set of metal “connected” puzzle pieces manufactured by the A.C. Gilbert Company was the initial typographic model, but some additions and changes were made. Instead of the right side of the ‘P’ being a semi-circle, it was changed to a more conservative ‘’squared’ look. After drawing out all of the necessary glyphs, the overall height of the characters was extended to make the letters and numbers appear taller and narrower. The end result is Narrow Deco JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.
