Maison Luxe is a revival of a very old font designed in France in or around the year 1820. You may have seen this font in the past under the names of Circus, Roma, Madame and Gillé Classic. As of November 2016 we have changed the name of this font from Gillé Classic to Maison Luxe which means Luxury House in French. For many years Joseph Gillé was credited as the original designer of this font however we've recently been contacted by a type historian in France reporting that he could not find any evidence supporting Joseph Gillé as the designer and to the best of his knowledge an artist by the name of Sylvestre may be the true designer. Goth icon and Saturday Night Live voice-over talent, Nicole Blackman grew up surrounded by design; her dad and her sister are architects, her mom is a retired fashion designer and her grandfather invented clip art. “No lie, Volk Clip Art in NJ,” she says. “Herb Lubalin designed his logo!” Sharing her grandfather’s fondness for fonts, Ms. Blackman created this alphabet. First of all, I don’t have an uncle called Edward, nor do I know anyone by that name. When I had finished this font, it had a strong ‘Uncle Edward’ feeling to it, so the name stuck. Uncle Edward is a handmade script font. I used a Japanese brush pen and some rough paper to create that ‘vintage’ look. Use Uncle Edward for your book covers, your invitations or your product packaging. Create labels for your vintage record collection with it, or print a guest list for your Christmas dinner party.
