Mira is a playful, decorative Art Nouveau font, released by Roos & Jung Foundry in Offenbach AM, Germany about 1902. The exaggerated serifs and the sharp contrast between the thick and thin strokes gives the page a whimsical “salt and pepper” look that is very distinctive. Mira uses our new encoding. The Euro symbol has been moved to position 128 and the Zcaron/zcaron have been added at positions 142/158 respectively. Otherwise, MIRA has our usual idiosyncratic glyph selection, with the German ch/ck instead of braces, Western European accented letters, lower case “o” and “u” with Hungarian umlaut and our usual Hand-in-Hand symbol. Hennigar is a Neo Grotesque sans serif especially useful for display text and headlines. Many of the rounded letters are based on the appearance of the letter O with very little variation in width. Because of it's condensed nature the apertures are narrow with extenders that dip well below the base line. Similarly many of the lowercase characters are based on the lowercase o. Terminals and tails always point east/west giving the entire alphabet a very uniform appearance. Basic Latin, extended Latin, diacritics, punctuation, math symbols, symbols,Greek, Cyrillic, ligatures, fractions, alternates, and kerning are included. In 1932, Xanti Schawinsky (1904?1979) designed an alphabet that combines two styles: a neo-classic stroke contrast paired with characteristics of stencil lettering. This mix is a child of its time and seems to reflect the Swiss and Italian biography of Schawinski. Luca Pellegrini took on the modern look and re-drew the letterforms, interrupted by subtle spaces where thick and thin strokes meet. Although Schawinsky had already designed a complete alphabet and figures in the early 1930s, Pellegrini took the character set to another level, adding currency signs, mathematical symbols and all kinds of punctuation ? anything needed to set more than just headlines. Black Pearl is a revival of an ornate calligraphic font possibly created between 1850 and 1870. I spent two years looking for all the letters of this font; once I found them all, I immediately went to work on recreating this old classic. I was not able to find any numbers for the font, so new to this style are numbers, some punctuation and currency symbols. The Truetype and OpenType formats include an extended character set with Central and Eastern European accented letters. Extra characters in this font are left and right pointing hands in place of the less than and greater than keys; a ship’s wheel, located on the asterisk key; and a boat anchor on the bracket keys.
