Dragonflight Pro is a script collection of four modern calligraphy fonts. Each glyph was hand-drawn with a brass folded pen dipped in ink. The tip of the folded pen resembles the shape of a dragonfly’s wing, hence the name. By tilting the pen variations in line width are made. This produces fun, expressive letters with a spontaneous personality. The regular and rough version of Dragonflight Pro have alternate glyphs that can either be accessed by the swashes feature, stylistic set 1, or the glyphs panel, depending on the application you are using. Steampipe is a font constructed of bits and pieces, reminiscent of the ironwork construction of the Crystal Palace or the inner workings of The Time Machine. Although it works fine as is, it comes alive with some Photoshop Layer Styles. Steampipe has the most extensive kerning of any font I've designed, just so (most) letters fit together as if they were constructed as a unit; use them in a program that supports special kerning.

Daniel Berkeley Updike seems to have stimulated the architect Bertram G. Goodhue to design the prototype in 1896 for Ingalls Kimball at the Cheltenham Press. Six years later Morris Fuller Benton at ATF developed it into the design and then the series that we know today. “Owing to certain eccentricities of form,” writes Updike, “it cannot be read comfortably for any length of time.” But he concludes: “It is, however, an exceedingly handsome letter for ephemeral printing.” Mergenthaler bought composing machine rights to the original design c. 1896, but bought the Benton design in 1904.

Jochen Schuss designed Linotype Paint It in 1997 with exclusively capital letters and in two weights. The best way to describe the weight Paint It might be to compare it with a labyrinth in which the figures only become clear to the reader dedicated to finding them. The English roundhand has always occupied the central position in the group of faces appropriate to the social printing handled by engravers, and their contemporary imitators, thermographers. At the end of the nineteenth century when engraving was mechanised by the pantographic engraving machine, the traditional roundhands found their way onto pantographic pattern plates. Embassy is a traditional roundhand of vigorous contrast with straightforward capitals with ball terminals; it was transferred from such an engravers’ pattern plate to the Fotosetter at Intertype about 1955. Alphatype’s Yorktown is similar, but appears to have less contrast.

Coal Brush is a bit of a misleading name. It looks as though it was made with a brush, but it was, in fact, made with a almost dried out old marker pen. But a font named ‘dried out old marker pen’ doesn’t really fly, so I decided to pimp the name. There you have it, you can’t even trust an honest typographer! Marker pen or brush, Coal Brush is a very sweet little font. It is all caps, but upper and lower case differ and can be mixed freely. Plus there’s a hidden stash of alternates for the lower case letters and an alternate ampersand! I actually threw that in to make up for my lie. So, use it for your books, your posters, your rap albums, rock operas, grilled food restaurants and designer BBQ sauces. It’s yours for the taking!
