Originally released in 1995 as a three font family, Paradigm forcefully addressed the emaciating effect that digitization was then exerting upon traditional serifed typography. Investigating the new media of a much previous era, Nick Shinn deconstructed the first roman type, designed by Sweynheym and Pannartz in 1467, and gleaned, from its minuscules, the low contrast and discreet serif treatment (portrayed by a novel convex effect), which he subsequently applied to both capitals and lower case of a classically proportioned Venetian invention. In 2008 the glyphs, metrics and hinting of the 1995 fonts were refined, Extra Bold and Light weights added, a full range of OpenType features instituted, and the number of characters per style increased almost threefold. A major upgrade to a unique typeface.

Written with a blunt graphite pen, PiS Coalfield features a scruffy scribbled look, loosely inspired by the expressive handwriting on various posters by Sister Corita Kent, an influential pop artist experimenting with serigraphs in the '60s. There is one set of regular and 4 sets of alternate glyphs for each basic letter programmed to cycle through automatically with the contextual alternate feature (which makes 5 possible versions of each letter). This dynamic athletic block has the need for speed. VT Gladius is a display typeface loaded with energy and ready to take off. Each letterform is built on a system of angles that generate a distinct rhythm, drawing the eye through the shape, making every word feel more dynamic. Further reinforcing this are the slightly thicker baseline-adjacent horizontal stems — alluding to the ink-pooling that lower strokes have in traditional penmanship — creating a “bounce” that gives each letter that much more personality. Inspired on Cuban posters by the talented and prolific graphic artist Eduardo Muñoz Bachs, Transmogrifier was hand painted with a thin brush, using loose, fast strokes. This font is packed with lots of contextual and stylistic alternates that automatically transmogrifies the letters as you write, when using opentype savvy programs. It's also possible to pick the alternates by hand and set the text the way you like better. The choice is yours, and there are really plenty of alternates to choose from and create original handlettered-looking designs. The font also brings a rough set of pictures based in charcoal sketches from Shniedewend & Lee Company, 1888. These were painted with the same thin brush as the letters, making it a natural complement. So let the transmogrification begin!

Narcissus Open is a heavy typeface designed by Walter Tiemann in 1921 for the Klingspor Foundry in Germany. It is a shaded wide roman using a very modest amount of white highlighting. Serifs are extremely delicate, almost ornamental. This elegant old typeface gives a feeling of importance and authority and is highly effective when used in large display sizes. Narcissus Solid lacks all highlighting and becomes more useful in smaller sizes. Narcissus Open and Solid are also available in the OpenType Std format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version. Advanced features currently work in Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress 7. Check for OpenType advanced feature support in other applications as it gradually becomes available with upgrades.

Once upon a time, in the days BC (that's Before Computers) there lived a very talented group of men and women whose job it was to render ads by hand. So skillful were these people that some say it was possible to actually identify the typefaces that the layout artists were emulating. Their renderings were swift and slick, no time for detail as it was necessary to do a whole bunch of variations, usually within ridiculous deadlines. Their only tools: bullet-tip markers and bond paper - often mistakes resulted but no time to re-do and white paint was totally unacceptable - just let the slipups be. Here's a simulation of their craft, we don't really know what typeface this was supposed to represent… any ideas?

ITC Portago was designed by Luis Siquot, who admits to a tendency toward unusual typefaces that can be read in text yet also work well in display settings. ITC Portago is a robust alphabet of caps and slightly smaller caps. It is a stencil face, based on the lettering on crates and luggage. Siquot says that his intention drawing Portago was to obtain a neutral, classical, very condensed grotesque stencil shape that is readable in text sizes, showing at the same time the 'movement' produced by the nicked edges. And of course the more obvious rough effect in headline sizes." At small sizes, Portago is best set with slightly looser letterspacing, as capital combinations usually do. Portago includes numerals in both full and small caps proportions.

Meet the new font family! This font came to my mind while I was sitting in line at the dentist. There are often different magazines at the front desk to read and pass the time while waiting. One of those magazines turned out to be about fashion. When I opened it on a random page, I saw beautiful pictures. But you know what the first thing that catches my eye? The font!
