Katastrofe is danish for … well, catastrophe - you may have guessed that! This font was almost a catastrophe to make! I cut out all the letters in a cardboard, and went outside to spray the letters with a spraycan. Everything went smooth as planned, but suddenly the wind started to blow and the papers started to fly away! Luckily I found some stones I used to make the papers stay in place. Lucky for me - otherwise it would have been a catastrophe! Seconds after finishing this font project, it started to rain…I just avoided a catastrophe! But is this font really a catastrophe, or does it just mimic punk/spray/grunge/riot? Make your own statements using Katastrofe, or perhaps your very own punk sayings like “Punk is not dead”, “Anarchy Rebel” or what suits you the best. Mentone is a new general purpose typeface, an attempt at extending the line of the great sans-serifs of the previous century, Frutiger - Stone Sans - Myriad. The font has round corners and subtle chamfers, which are all but invisible at text sizes, but add an upbeat, irreverent expression at display sizes. The typeface is named after the beautiful bayside suburb of Melbourne, Australia, where the designer lives. This new version (2.01) was spaced and kerned by Igino Marini of iKern. The Nov. 26, 1921 issue of “The Moving Picture World” carried an ad for the dramatic film “For Your Daughter’s Sake” (originally tilted “The Common Sin” and produced in 1920). Hand lettered in an Art Nouveau sans serif style, the ad copy inspired Movie Drama JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

In the 19th century typefaces with star-like serifs developed from the medieval type styles, retaining the sharp corners and peaks of some of the blackletter types but losing the flourishes on the upper-case letters. Asterx is in that tradition of star-footed typefaces, though it is not modeled on any particular one.

This fine lined display type face was named Allioideae because of the ascenders of the lower cases. They are rising upright with a single stroke and are ending - depending on the font style - into a spherical blossom. The name was chosen concerned to the plant allium, that forms an umbel at the top of a leafless stalk, when it is blooming. Allioideae is the name of a subfamily of monocot flowering plants in the family Amaryllidaceae. The name is derived from the generic name of the type genus, Allium. The wide and round capital letters are showing a nice contrast to the lower cases and giving the font a kind of female feeling. Newspeak is a display typeface based upon Soviet architectural forms from the Stalinist period (spanning the 1930s—'50s). Stalinist architecture is now considered unsightly and without aesthetic merit, yet it has a strange beauty, hinting at an unrealised utopia (while its function was to buttress a brutal dictatorship). Inspiration was also drawn from the Cyrillic alphabet which, to kids growing up in Western Europe in the '70s and '80s, was a cipher for an alternative way of living – Cyrillic letterforms represented the exotic, familiarity-twice-removed universe of Eastern Bloc states. When you visited a communist country you were confronted with unfamiliar typography that reinforced your sense of alienation and unease that there existed a real, if imperfect, working alternative to consumerism.

Aspen is a refreshing and resilient typeface for text of any kind. Functional but not faceless, Aspen derives a very distinctive character from an unusual pedigree. It is loosely influenced by early American and European grotesques, but with more warmth and improved legibility. And where these historical models were rigid and bulky, Aspen’s curves have a gentle sway that makes for very comfortable reading. Uninhibited by typographic demands, this artistic font freely expresses individual creativity. Grandecort is derived from the OakPark family. It has lost the serifs, and has moved to a more traditional look. The upper case letters are a bit heavier than the lower case letters, but overall the letter shapes are fairly conventional for a bold, display face. In later 2018 the family was expanded to 9 fonts. GrancMitStripes was reworked to make four new faces: GrancAllStripes, GrancTopStripes, GrancBottomStripes, and GrancCaps. The last can be used as a background layer for the others. Also, The interior of GrandecortShadow was separated out to form GrandecortShadowInside. It has the same shapes as Grandecort-Regular but the spacing of GrandecortShadow and can be layered with the shadowed style to easily create bi-colored letters.

Mexican printmaker Jose Guadalupe Posada (1851-1913) created a massive variety of material—broadsheets, cards, advertisements, posters, etc.—which largely represented a defense of the common man and a manifestation of the horrible and gruesome events of the day. Posada often cut his own lettering that looked like more decorative versions of Gothic wood types. His most notable imagery comes from his Calaveras celebrating the Day of the Dead. Calaveras often represent effigies of living people depicted as skeletons going about their daily activities.
