Friedrich Bauer’s Senatsfraktur, coming in two styles, regular and bold, released by Genzsch and Heyse, Hamburg, in 1912, has come to life again. Both styles contain the traditional long s which can be accessed by either the OT feature historical alternatives or by typing [alt] + b. To get access to all ligatures, it is recommended to activate both Standard and Discretionary Ligatures.

In the late 90’s, there were many German cars coming into Malmö (where I lived at the time). I was blown away by the font on the license plates. So strange, so strong, peculiar – but still macho. I built the uppercase from my own photos. After this I completed the font with my own lowercase, small caps and punctuation.

From original samples of Rudolf Koch's Maximilian, Gothicus and Gothicus Alternate have Fraktur style captials, Gothicus Roman has Roman capitals. All three have the same lower case which includes three swash characters for g, s and t, available as discretionary ligatures in OpenType versions, and manually otherwise. All include two authentic ornaments, also penned by Koch. Gothicus Roman has three additional floret ornaments.

ITC Kulukundis is the work of designer Daniel Pelavin, a square, connecting script which looks as though it could have been cast in shiny chrome for the side of a 1950s American roadster. Pelavin based his design very loosely on a vertical French script but the overall look is all his own. Unlike calligraphic scripts, the lower case letters all connect in exactly the same way and the straight diagonal junctures give the typeface its broad, spacious character and keep it locked into a continuous line. Madita started with the idea of an upright sans script. Unlike other script typefaces, some of the characters look fairly constructed. The endings are either vertical or horizontal. On the other hand there are the swashes of a flowing script woven into the sans stroke that create an interesting tension. Madita is surprisingly legible, even in smaller sizes. Skope is an experiment in horizontal stress and also a recreation of the extreme lettering style of comic masters such as Josep Coll or Manuel Urda from his cartoons in the pages of the classic TBO (Barcelona, Spain, 1917-1998) or our contemporary favorites Francesc Capdevila -Max- and Joost Swarte. The proportions and some of the fundamental features of Skope are drawn from the features of the masthead of the magazine Triunfo (Valencia, Spain, 1946-1982). The inspiration for the numbers comes from a kitchen clock from the 70’s photographed in the distance in a second-hand shop.

A slightly regularized digital version of a late Baroque Fraktur type, probably from the beginning of the 18th century, issued by the Norstedts type foundry in Stockholm in 56 point size as "Sju petit fraktur nr 2". This digital font is designed for rather large sizes, at least 30 points. I grew up with the ‘Save The Whales’ slogan: I remember watching the news and seeing little Greenpeace dinghies taking on huge Japanese whalers, and activists clinging on for dear life. I haven’t heard that slogan for a while: maybe because whaling is soooo 1890’s, but also maybe because the world has other problems to address. Out of respect for the ‘Save The Whale’ activists, I named this fattish font Whale Song. Whale Song is a robust comic font. It was especially created for book covers, product packaging and posters and, of course, it comes with a whale of diacritics.

Bannock Brae Gothic is a sans serif typeface. It is an original creation of Steve Jackaman (ITF) and was created for the Red Rooster Collection in 1999. The typeface was loosely inspired by a typeface from an old obscure wood type specimen book from the turn of the 20th century. Due to its turn-of-the-century roots, Bannock Brae Gothic has an informal 1920’s art deco look. It finds an ideal home in lighthearted projects concerning crafts, food, festivals, and music, but its alternates still give it the flexibility to showcase a classic and timeless feel in any project.
