I love the trends in handwritten calligraphy and wanted to play with playful lettering. I've heard from many of my customers that they don't use Open Type software and feel limited in the cool features of OT scripts because of this, so I've replaced the | (bar key) with a left-sided tail to start the lowercase r and s in words that begin with those letters.

When Aldo Novarese designed his “tipo inglese” Juliet typeface, he had a simple objective in mind: Reduce the inclination angle of the traditional 18th and 19th centuries English script in order to make the punchcutter’s job easier and the resulting metal type more durable. But when Juliet was released by Nebiolo in 1955, it was a big surprise to both typesetters and calligraphers all over Europe. Novarese’s idea of working the standard copperplate script within the limited technology of the time proved to be a marvel in optical metal sizing (Juliet was available in sizes ranging from 12 to 60 pt), but also opened the door to new calligraphic possibilities. Easier readability and a very friendly color were obvious side effects of the reduced angle. So soon after its release, calligraphers worldwide began emulating the angle reduction and experimenting with the application of the same concept to other calligraphic genres. Today, more than 50 years later, many professional calligraphers point to Novarese’s Juliet as an opening to fresh ideas and new directions in 20th century elegant calligraphy. Barmoor is a robust, classic roman display face, inspired by the letter designs of the Parisian craftsman Claude Garamond and other 16th century French engravers as well as antique roman letterforms. It works especially well letterspaced and in all caps. Alternate W, R, J, M, Q and K can be used to add a modest bit of flair to letterspaced, all cap treatments. Barmoor is mainly intended to be a display font or a limited text font.

Yazan is a New Arabic display typeface for desktop applications, inspired by oriental kufi and Qairawani kufi . Designed and developed by Sultan M. Saeed, Yazan has updated proportions and details, and is distinguished by its traditional serenity, modern aesthetics, This makes it suitable for large display sizes, especially in the area of advertising, while still functioning well as a text face.

Tarim is an active contemporary variable font, complete with a flexible range of cases tailored to responsive layouts designed by Sultan Maqtari. Tarim is serif style typeface for desktop applications, websites and digital apps. The font here used is the Intellecta's Frompac joined and art worked with the classical arabesques published in the Ludwig Petzendorfer's Schriften-Atlas. All-caps script with swashes in upper case, and ligatures. And outline with same metrics, so the oulines fit snuggly on top of the book-variant.

Neulis is a geometric sans and modern script hybrid offering a unique blend of characters inspired by script letterforms (like the l, k, r, s) along with script-style exit strokes (like the a, n, u) that blend into the geometric skeleton. Morris Fuller Benton’s drawings at the Smithsonian show a creative concern for effects of scale on typeface design. Tobias Frere-Jones began with 4pt ATF Franklin Gothic drawings, modifying proportions to mix with Poynter Oldstyle and Benton Gothic, and adjusting ends of the curved strokes of C G S a c e r s to suit news printing conditions. FF Marselis crossbreeds geometric and humanistic forms, creating a freshly dynamic sans serif family. All of the counters in the typeface are open; this aids readers’ eyes quickly flow across lines of text, without experiencing hang-ups. Certain superfluous strokes have been eliminated – there are no spurs on the b or q, for instance. The alphabet’s diagonals all bow outwards slightly, adding flavor to the “A”, “K”, “R”, “V”, “W”, “X”, “Y” and “Z”.

Sortie Super is a take on one of the kings of display lettering - Caslon's high-contrast, reversed stress 'Italian' style. It looks great at big sizes and in short flurries... and shouldn't be used in confined spaces.  When compared with the original face, the weight and contrast of Sortie Super has been exaggerated. To add gravity to the letters I've increased their width overall and reduced the spacing to a hair-line fracture for added visual impact. Characters like 'S', 'E','O' and 'Z' are relatively close to their historical precedents - however the terminals on the 'C-G-S-З-Є', which have been drawn so to be more consistent. Other aspects, such as the leg of the 'R' and 'Я', the apex of the 'A' and the spur of the 'G' are revised and simplified, to help spacing and optical weight across the alphabet. Also, to reduce visual noise terminals in characters like 'C', 'J' and 'R'' are horizontally aligned. Meanwhile, the central horizontal strokes in the 'B', 'P' and 'R' etc are reduced to a hairline, so as to create a more simplified system of thick-to-thin.  The temptation when drawing this kind of esoteric display alphabet is to start to rely on modular components. Which, while copy-paste-repeat is a sure-fire way to make the face more visually consistent, it's a lazy method that risks allowing the font become soulless and mechanical. An early experiment I made was making a monospaced version, which was useful in headlines, but it lost that loving feeling. So, by maintaining a handful of flourishes – the tail of the '?', the inky drop of the '!', the bulbous gloop of arms of the 'Ж' and 'К', the swirling legs in the 'R', 'Я' and 'Л', the big-bowling weight of the 'J' and 'U' – plus a few in-built inconsistencies and a bit of its own silliness, Sortie Super retains some of the organic warmth of its ancestor. Conversely, the counters, apertures and negative space are largely rigidly geometric, which helps give the revival font a bit of a modern touch. Sortie Super is an uppercase-only display font that comes with Western, Central and East European Latin, extended Cyrillic, Pinyin, as well as a set of hairline graphic features and symbols.

Gunsmoke is a revival of a James Conner's Sons font that's been listed under different names such as Extended Clarendon Shaded, Original Ornamented and Galena. Dating back to 1888 this font was available with an original lowercase, numbers and punctuation. Today we've expanded the set to include the original shaded version a regular black, open left, open right and a fill font for the two open faced versions. The single Gunsmoke fill font is in alignment with the Gunsmoke Open R version and will also work with Gunsmoke Open L by shifting your fill font layer to align with the Open L version. You will need an application that works in layers in order to use the fill font with the Gunsmoke Open L and R fonts. Make sure you check out the left and right pointing gun hands on the less than and greater than keys, the gun alone is on the left and right brace keys. Remember to check your gun in with the Marshal when entering Dodge City.

The image of a set of vintage French tin stencils spotted online was the starting point in designing Freight Yard Stencil JNL. A more traditional ‘B’ and ‘R’ replaces the original characters (which looked kind of awkward due to extra ‘stencil breaks’ within the letters). However, there are a few interesting variants in other characters to set the design apart from similar stencil fonts. Work Yard Stencil JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

This is a digital reinterpretation of Walter Huxley's 1935 evergreen "Huxley Vertical", which was originally cast for American Type Founders. A timeless classic which has been in use since the Art Deco era, this version is known as Hotel Suite JNL. The beautiful hand lettering on the sheet music cover for Will R. Anderson's "Good Night Dear" (circa 1908) features quaint, semi-calligraphic lettering in the Art Nouveau Style. The song itself was popularized by Billie Burke [best remembered as the Good Witch in “The Wizard of Oz”] in the musical comedy "Love Watches".

Within the pages of an early-1900s instructional book on show card lettering was found a marvelous example of an alphabet that typifies the Art Nouveau movement of the era and served as the inspiration for Nouveau Riche JNL. Berlin Sans is based on a brilliant alphabet from the late ’20s, originally released by Bauer with the name Negro, the very first sans that Lucian Bernhard ever designed. Bernhard Modern was designed in 1937 by Lucian Bernhard for ATF. It is his personal version of the small x-height engravers’ old styles popular at the time. A perennial best-seller, Bernhard Modern remains popular in a wide variety of design and typesetting uses more that 60 years after its initial release. Bitstream’s version offers a wide array of typographer sets, including alternates, extensions, small caps and italic swashes.

The roots of Rockport BF run deep. 19th century woodtypes, display gothics of the 40s and 50s, are inspiration for this distinctive font style. Its OpenType programming features automatic fractions, stylistic sets and alternates for a, b, q, r, t, u, y, M, N, U, Y, and dollar symbol. Tempered by somewhat humanistic elements, these condensed, geometrically-structured letterforms bring a strong but friendly presence to posters, logos, bookjackets, signage headlines, and many other typographic environments.

The Fuel typefaces are a modern update on the techno sans, complete with soft rounded corners as well as decorative inktraps. Approach is a modern approximation to the early grotesques. An utilitarian low contrast font, a bit mechanic but plenty of character. One of its characteristic elements is a kind of ‘elbow pipe’ shape that is present in many letters like the tail of the a, f, j, t, R, Q or 1 among others. Besides, the synthetic punctuation and quotes give it a more contemporary appearance. Approach tries to feel fresh against all odds, being familiar but different. For more details see the PDF.

A fanciful reinterpretation of the elvish type found inside the ring in J. R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings". Elfin has a very small x height with large ascenders and descenders. Unlike most scripts, Elfin characters connect from the x height, not the base line. If you're looking for a magical, Disneyesque, fairies-prancing-about type, you need Elfin. Elfin contains upper and lower case letters, old style figures (numbers), punctuation, foreign accents. Indulge the Peter Pan that lurks within!

The font family "Clasica" is ideal to cover every design need. Excellent for titles, paragraphs, magazines, books, editorials and logos. Binner Gothic is a very narrow sans serif thought to have been cut by the Bruce Typefoundry, in New York, around the turn of the century. The capitals are rather heavy with an elongated appearance, accentuated by the high-waisted treatment of characters such as B E F H M N P and R. The lowercase ascenders and descenders of the Binner Gothic font are cut at an angle. Binner Gothic is a display face particularly useful where space is at a premium.

vastra is a slim, futuristic, bauhaus inspired typeface. It has plenty of those pesky foreign glyphs and various alternates of the standard alphabet. Lycia (Lycian: 𐊗𐊕𐊐𐊎𐊆𐊖 Trm̃mis; Greek: Λυκία, Lykia; Turkish: Likya) was a geopolitical region in Anatolia in what are now the provinces of Antalya and Muğla on the southern coast of Turkey, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, and Burdur Province inland. Known to history since the records of ancient Egypt and the Hittite Empire in the Late Bronze Age, it was populated by speakers of the Luwian language group. Written records began to be inscribed in stone in the Lycian language (a later form of Luwian) after Lycia's involuntary incorporation into the Achaemenid Empire in the Iron Age. At that time (546 BC) the Luwian speakers were decimated, and Lycia received an influx of Persian speakers. Ancient sources seem to indicate that an older name of the region was Alope (Ancient Greek: Ἀλόπη, Alópē). Lycia fought for the Persians in the Persian Wars, but on the defeat of the Achaemenid Empire by the Greeks, it became intermittently a free agent. After a brief membership in the Athenian Empire, it seceded and became independent (its treaty with Athens had omitted the usual non-secession clause), was under the Persians again, revolted again, was conquered by Mausolus of Caria, returned to the Persians, and finally fell under Macedonian hegemony upon the defeat of the Persians by Alexander the Great. Due to the influx of Greek speakers and the sparsity of the remaining Lycian speakers, Lycia was rapidly Hellenized under the Macedonians, and the Lycian language disappeared from inscriptions and coinage.

Rodia is an Oddball Geometric Sans Typeface consisting of nine weights in both roman and oblique. It’s a geometric sans with a twist that’s perfect for branding and identity projects – it will also give your body text a unique voice. Franz Kafka’s manuscripts have always been a source of inspiration for designer Julia Sysmäläinen. At first she was just interested in literary aspects but later she noticed that content and visual form can not be separated in the work of this ingenious writer. Analyzing Kafka’s handwriting at the Berlin National Library, Julia was inspired to design the typeface FF Mister – by now a well known classic. Over the years, FF Mister K became a handsome typeface family and even produced offspring: the Josef K Patterns. Some of Kafka’s most expressive letterforms were the starting point for these decorative ornaments. How do the Patterns work? Outlines and fillings correspond to the uppercase and the lowercase letters on your keyboard. You can use them separately or layer them on top of each other. If you write a line of “pattern-text” in lowercase and repeat it underneath in uppercase you get a row of fillings followed by a row of outlines. Now you can color them and then set line space = 0 to get a single line of layered colored ornaments. Alternatively, activating OpenType / stylistic set / stylistic alternates will also unite the two lines to a single layered line. A 1942 photograph showing the exterior of the famous Hollywood restaurant Sardi’s and it’s unusually lettered sign was the inspiration for Fine Food JNL. Classically Art Deco, the Sardi’s sign had an ‘S’ looking like an inverted ‘J’ with a flat tail, a traditional ‘A’ replaced by a triangle and the ‘R’ composed of a ‘D’ with a diagonal extension. These elements were balanced against more traditional [but complementary] characters to retain the novel charm of the original signage. Fine Food JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.
