Peter Schmidt, well-known designer from Hamburg, browsed in a fashion magazine on a return flight from the United States. At that time he was thinking about a logo for a philharmonic orchestra. ITC Kumquat is the work of American designer Eric Stevens. He started with the logo for his company, Tower of Babel Design, and expanded upon the Mesopotamian look to create a typeface to match. Stevens imagined drawing figures in the sand with a stick and how this method would change the way one usually draws characters, usually with lines replacing curves. Boutique is a reinterpretation of Modern typefaces that posits an alternative present for the genre. Our initial version of Boutique explored the relationship between Modern typefaces and Modernism. Traiectum is the old Roman name for the city of Utrecht (in The Netherlands). When I started working on this font, I wanted to give it a Latin name and Traiectum sounded good! Traiectum is a hand drawn font with a regal and messy look. It was based on Goudy Old Style, a classic old-style serif typeface created in 1915 by Frederic W. Goudy. Traiectum is a multilingual, all caps font and I am sure you’ll find lots of uses for it. The city it was named after, Utrecht, is actually very nice! You should visit one day!

The inspiration for Mimosa comes directly from the packaging for “Moulinard Jeune”, a line of French toiletries from the 1920s. I created the 240-odd glyphs needed to make up a complete font based upon the style of a handful of hand-lettered characters that were used on the original items. Mimosa is a mono-weight, connecting vertical script with a fairly regular set of lower case and slightly more decorative upper case glyphs. As with any decorative script, if you set copy in all caps, you will be tracked down and severely punished by the type police.
