When Jim Lee sent us pages of his latest project, DIVINE RIGHT, we knew we had to do something special for him. Something Unique. We knew we had to create a whole new look for his book. We spent weeks holed up in our Colorado mountain retreat, meditating on the true nature of leading and kerning, sketching out ideas and rejecting all but the best of the best. As the dreaded deadline doom rapidly approached, we suddenly knew we had the answer: A line of 'Celebrity' fonts -- digitally remastered lettering based on handwriting samples of the many Artists and Creators we all know and love. John Quincy Adams, sixth President of the United States, didn't hit his stride until he'd left that lofty office. It was during his many years in Congress that he assured his legacy, not least because of his long, masterful oratory opposing slavery. His speeches, in fact, won him the nickname "Old Man Eloquent." So when I decided to simulate Adams's penmanship in his legendary diary (which he kept for nearly 70 years), it seemed fitting to call the font by that name. I focused on his handwriting from about 1810, when he was Ambassador to Russia, but also consulted pages from later years. Old Man Eloquent has both regular and bold weights. The OpenType version has more than 450 glyphs, including alternate uppercase characters, old-style and lining figures, and numerous ligatures; all formats contain several common (English) words.

The 2nd installment of the Enchanted Land family takes us on another medieval adventure, opting to completely rebuild instead of refining the legacy script. More emphasis was put into the undulating nature of the Uppercase characters and how they keep your eyes flowing. For this reason, straight lines and right angles are rarely used in favor of flamboyant terminals and wispy swashes. Lowercase characters, by contrast, adhere to a consistent model defined by its straightened edges and sharp corners. This script flirts with several old world styles but seeks only to borrow elements rather than completely emulate them. German Blackletter, Old English, Uncial, Victorian, it’s in there! FONT STORY The Majestic Caps When I was on one of my visits to rare books rooms I found some large caps of Hermann Zapf, and I knew that I had to make a font inspired by these. I was surprised that no one had ever made them into a font. They were some of the most beautiful caps I had ever seen. These caps were surprisingly difficult to make. I thought it would take me a week or two; to get the detail and spirit right took significantly longer– but it was well worth the effort! When you print Hermanz Titling on a page, you will see what I mean. Even when printed digitally, it’s the closest thing to letterpress. You might even have some people thing it was printed by a traditional method with ink! (Note: Unless printed at very large sizes, this font is not recommended for actual letterpress, because the serifs are too thin.) This font is a collection of ornaments and drawings suitable for Halloween themed materials. There are bats, singly and in swarms, owls, dead trees, spiders and webs, as well as calligraphic ornaments with a decidedly creepy bent. Most of the characters in this font were drawn on a napkin with a felt marker, and the resulting ragged texture was very suitable to the Halloween subject matter. Where the same stroke is repeated in one glyph, the contours have been edited to minimize obvious repetition. Use it for your Halloween party invitations and posters. Mark van Bronkhorst designed MVB Celestia Antiqua at a time when font choice was limited. Design was characterized by overuse of the few fonts that came with laser printers. A rustic typeface, recalling the roughness and irregularity of pre-digital printing, was a response to the cold crispness of DTP. MVB Celestia Antiqua holds its own among a large group of other “weathered” serif fonts, in part due to the size of the family: three weights, small caps, italics, and two titling styles. But it's also successful because it's simply drawn well, the contours only as rough as they need to be, enabling text at any size, large or small.

Toma Sans is a sans serif type family of seven weights plus matching italics. Fabrikat Kompakt (formally known as Fabrikat) is a type family designed by Christoph Koeberlin with creative input of Hannes von Döhren. The Sans Serif family is published by HVD Fonts and consists of seven weights plus matching italics. Its geometric design is based on German 20th century engineers’ typefaces and has a plain and precise appearance. The shapes are optically corrected, yet retain an uncut charm. They work best in display as well as text sizes. Orbi Sans was designed as an extension of the font system Orbi released on the end of 2010. It’s a low contrast humanist sans serif of open design with the elements of dynamic nature that inherited from Orbi its elegance and clearness. Prelo was designed to be a neutral, highly readable typeface for identity, editorial and information design. With nine weights and nine true italics from Hairline to Black, Prelo is a workhorse typeface full of OpenType features such as small caps, tabular figures, central European characters and historical figures, among others. Like other DSType fonts, most of the diacritics were designed to fit the gap between the x-height and the caps height, avoiding some common problems with the accented characters. The curves are soft and smooth, providing legibility even in very poor conditions, and the neutrality allows this typeface to be used with any serif companion.

Marista is a bit of an unusual design, a cursive monospaced font inspired by the classic cursive typewriter fonts used in the 1960s-70s. It is designed to feel 'real', and captures some of the light irregularities in line weight which characterise real typewritten text rather than their computer equivalents. Marista is distinctive but easily readable, even in block text where some monospaced fonts suffer. Marista is best used at small to medium sizes, and at a uniform size throughout a document or design to capture the typewritten feel. The italic is more similar to authentic typewriter cursive fonts.
