Westside was designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1989 and is a kind of wood type. It is reminiscent of dusty streets, Wild West heroes and swinging saloon doors. The origins of this kind of typeface can be found in the early 19th century. Called Italian or Italienne, these typefaces quickly became very popular. They are distinguished by square serifs whose width is larger than the stroke width of the characters. When the letters are set together, the heavy serifs build dark horizontal bands. Westside is a particularly decorative typeface which will have a marked effect when used expertly. It is perfect for headlines in larger point sizes, which will highlight its special character.

A font where "each word that's set approaches becoming its own logo" is how some have described this unique typeface. Originally inspired by an enamel sign he picked up at a Paris flea market, Michael Doret says that the seven letters contained in the sign were enough to suggest to him that here were letterforms put together in a way that he had never seen in a contemporary digital font. Always eager to create something a little out of the ordinary, he took up the challenge to flesh out the forms into a complete font. Orion can be defined as a geometric, connecting script that is at once contemporary, yet classic and timeless.

Poole Standard is the "flagship" typeface from former wine label designer, Wesley Poole. It's a versatile friendly face, antique but not antiquated, elegant yet inviting. "I first used a hand lettered version of this look on the Carmenet label. I've had this alphabet designed in my head for some time. It's perfect for upscale work. Goodchild Pro is a pragmatic text face, equipped for sophisticated academic typography. The face has a large x-height, as there is little point in adding to the stock of rangy “book” Jensons. Despite this departure from the archetype, in other respects Goodchild is true to the original letter forms in its tight fit, modulation of stroke contrast, and manipulation of x-height and serif size. Jenson’s tiny tittles and diamond-shaped periods have, however, been relinquished. The finish is not the antiquing that one often finds in Renaissance revivals. 
Here clean, decisive details provide a freshly minted, contemporary appearance, providing a smart impression should one wish to use the face at display size.

I got rhythm, I got music, I got my swirls, who could ask for anything more? Periplus is quite an eccentric type, full of twists and nice oddities here and there. It is an all-caps font with 2 variations for each letter and number, stored at upper- and lower-case slots. For added amusement, every letter got not 1 or 2, but 4 swash variations. One can be reached through the OpenType swash feature: just select the letter and hit the swash button. The other ones you will access through a glyphs palette. All of them are neatly organized with the 'access all alternates' feature. The font is yet equipped with some stylistic alternates and ornaments. Have fun!

Gothiks is a powerfull 6-weight display sanserif influenced by Texturas. The rithm and verticality of Texturas can be easily identified on the letters with diagonal strokes like A N M K k V v W w X x Y y Z z: here they are all vertical. This kind of morphology was chosen because it accepts condensation in a very natural way, giving to this compact sanserif a very unique personality. The intermediate weights can be used for short texts while extreme weights are excellent for big sizes. Hopeless Diamond is a contemporary display typeface inspired by the sculptural muscle of 19th century carved lettering and the radical forms of the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and the F-117 Nighthawk stealth strike aircraft. The typeface itself contains three different styles, each with an italic and an alternate character set that can be used to generate a number of interesting permutations. The name was taken from the derisive term that test pilots used for Have Blue, a late '70s stealth demonstration aircraft –and early prototype for the F-117— designed and built by Lockheed's Skunkworks division. Coleface was created by the British typographer Roy Cole, completed shortly before his death in 2012. It comprises six fonts: Coleface 30, 60, 90 and the italics 33, 66, 99. As with his earlier typeface families - Lina, Zeta and Colophon - Coleface is a highly-readable sans serif typeface that offers significant flexibility in terms of its potential uses. Roy Cole studied typographic design under the tutelage of Emil Ruder at the Gewerbeschule in Basel, at a time when typographic history was being made through the creation of a style that epitomized modernity. Broken Vows was one of two typefaces I created to go along with some fragmented poetry written as I went through a divorce, the second being WHORE. The letterforms contain fragments of familiar script faces that are attempting to hold themselves together. Some of the connecting elements of the letterforms remain and hold the face together.

The Deberny typeface is an interpretation–carrying a contemporary imprint–of a typographic style which appeared and spread at the end of the 19th century until the begining of the 20th. These typefaces were named Italian, Venetian, Veronese and were classified in the Hellenic category, a spontaneous typographic movement caracterized by triangular and heavy serifs. They found their inspiration among numerous references, from incised to slab serif typefaces and their extreme expressions in wood type letterforms. The Deberny font family is made of 26 styles in 3 complementary sets of style, offering a wide palette of visual resonance: • Deberny Line is ideally suited for editorial, branding, posters and billboards. It has sharp contrast between thick and thin strokes. Heavy horizontal strokes are not frequent in roman letters, but here they fit naturally with the italic letters. • Deberny Open is a stylish outline declination of Deberny Line Medium and Medium Italic. • Deberny Text is an adaptation of Deberny Line made for broader use. Compact sans, ideal for setting long texts in small or very small type sizes: for packaging, instruction booklets, drug information leaflets and anything else that has to be legible at very small sizes. Lean and rhythmical, designed ideally to be used at less than 8 points (Brevier was the old typefounders’ name for 8-point type), Brevier holds up well even under adverse printing conditions. The apparently geometric letterforms hide Renaissance characteristics, the x-height and openings are very generous and the strokes slightly modulated. In order to offset ink spread – which is inevitable when printing very small sizes of type – Brevier has large white spaces between the letters. All internal angles have deep ink traps and many connections have been left open.

Compendium is a sequel to my Burgues font from 2007. Actually it is more like a prequel to Burgues. Before Louis Madarasz awed the American Southeast with his disciplined corners and wild hairlines, Platt Rogers Spencer, up in Ohio, had laid down a style all his own, a style that would eventually become the groundwork for the veering calligraphic method that was later defined and developed by Madarasz. After I wrote the above paragraph, I was so surprised by it, particularly by the first two sentences, that I stopped and had to think about it for a week. Why a sequel/prequel? Am I subconsciously joining the ranks of typeface-as-brand designers? Are the tools I build finally taking control of me? Am I having to resort to “milking it” now? Not exactly. Even though the current trend of extending older popular typefaces can play tricks with a type designer’s mind, and maybe even send him into strange directions of planning, my purpose is not the extension of something popular. My purpose is presenting a more comprehensive picture as I keep coming to terms with my obsession with 19th century American penmanship. Those who already know my work probably have an idea about how obsessive I can be about presenting a complete and detailed image of the past through today’s eyes. So it is not hard to understand my need to expand on the Burgues concept in order to reach a fuller picture of how American calligraphy evolved in the 19th century. Burgues was really all about Madarasz, so much so that it bypasses the genius of those who came before him. Compendium seeks to put Madarasz’s work in a better chronological perspective, to show the rounds that led to the sharps, so to speak. And it is nearly criminal to ignore Spencer’s work, simply because it had a much wider influence on the scope of calligraphy in general. While Madarasz’s work managed to survive only through a handful of his students, Spencer’s work was disseminated throughout America by his children after he died in 1867. The Spencer sons were taught by their father and were great calligraphers themselves. They would pass the elegant Spencerian method on to thousands of American penmen and sign painters. Though Compendium has a naturally more normalized, Spencerian flow, its elegance, expressiveness, movement and precision are no less adventurous than Burgues. Nearing 700 glyphs, its character set contains plenty of variation in each letter, and many ornaments for letter beginnings, endings, and some that can even serve to envelope entire words with swashy calligraphic wonder. Those who love to explore typefaces in detail will be rewarded, thanks to OpenType. I am so in love with the technology now that it’s becoming harder for me to let go of a typeface and call it finished. You probably have noticed by now that my fascination with old calligraphy has not excluded my being influenced by modern design trends. This booklet is an example of this fusion of influences. I am living 150 years after the Spencers, so different contextualization and usage perspectives are inevitable. Here the photography of Gonzalo Aguilar join the digital branchings of Compendium to form visuals that dance and wave like the arms of humanity have been doing since time eternal. Operina is based on a 16th-century lettering model of the scribe Ludovico degli Arrighi (Vicentino Ludovico degli Arrighi) used in his 1522 instructional lettering book, "La Operina da Imparare di scrivere littera Cancellarescha." This book contains what is considered to be the earliest printed examples of Chancery Cursive. Rather than try to reproduce a perfect, smooth, type-like version of Ludovico's hand, which has been attempted in the past, the designer opted to leave in some rough edges and, thereby, create a look that mimics the endearing artifacts of quill and ink lettering on parchment. When reviving an old style, a designer is faced with many challenging decisions, such as whether to aim for ultimate authenticity or to modify the alphabet for modern use. The decision here was to create a font that resembles the 16th-century Italian hand-lettering master's, but is also useful to the contemporary user. Because the letters U u W w J j and our modern Arabic numerals were not in use during the advent of these original letterforms, these had to be interpolated. To make a complete and useable font set, we also had to fashion many of the extra and diacritical characters to match the look of the alphabet. There are three fonts in this set: Romano(simple), Corsivo(more complex), and Fiore(swash). Romano is the most subdued, it contains Roman looking caps and has lining figures. Corsivo is more elaborate, it has more decorative capital letters and an alternate version of the lowercase with longer ascenders and descenders, and old style figures. Fiore, the swash font, is the most elaborate with the longest ascenders and descenders. You may not wish to use the Fiore version on its own, especially as all caps; it is meant to enhance the other two alphabets because it contains the most elaborate capitals and has many extra ligatures. P22 Operina Pro is an OpenType version that contains over 1200 characters. It features Small Caps, Old Style Figures, full European, Cyrillic and Greek character sets and a new OpenType first with automatic Roman Numerals. Just type any number and with the feature, it will convert to Roman Numerals!
