A tessellation is a shape that can be used to completely fill the plane—simple examples are isosceles triangles, squares, and hexagons. These Tessie fonts have two family members, a solid style that must have different colors when used and an outline style. They can be used separately or they can be used in layers with the outline style on top of the solid style. For rows to align properly, leading must be the same as point size. Shapes that tessellate and also resemble real-world objects are often called Escher-like tessellations. This typeface contains Escher-like tessellations of birds. A number of years ago I decided to see how many of the 28 Heesch types of tessellations I could use to make birds standing on the backs of other birds. I found standing bird patterns for all 17 of the types that had either translated or glided edges. The TessieStandingBirds typefaces contain the standing-bird shapes that I discovered. At first glance they seem to be quite similar, but small differences matter in how they fit together. Most of the patterns require more than one character. The sample file here shows how pieces fit together to give tessellating patterns. Although the early 1900s through the 1920s seemed to be the "Golden Age" of ridiculously long novelty song titles, it appears that even the decade of the 1940s had its fair share as well. Song Merchant JNL was modeled from the hand lettered [but exhausting] title of the sheet music for "Princess Poo-Poo-Ly Has Plenty Pa-Pa-Ya (and she Loves to Give it Away)". Despite the obvious double-entendre inferences of the title, the square block letters with rounded corners make for a useful headline font (even if the source material it was drawn from is quite forgettable). Maged, a traditional-style Arabic text face, enjoyed widespread popularity as a dry-transfer typeface prior to being licensed by Letera Arabica to Linotype-Hell for font production. In consultation with the Linotype Design Studio (U.K.), the artwork was redrawn by Adrian Williams to render the typeface into a complete, unitized Arabic font with a full complement of traditional-style ligatures suitable for digitization. Maged, which has two weights, first appeared as a 202 font in 1987 before its eventual conversion to OpenType in 2005. Thus Linotype’s Maged font can be described as a trend-setting modern Naskh design that retains a sense of the fluidity of Naskh calligraphy: the letters, when composed, appear as freshly-written text characterized by rich, inky horizontals, tapering swash strokes and contrasting delicate ascenders. The Bold exploits these features of the Regular without excess, tempered by the need for clarity at smaller sizes. The starter point of the Wienerin typeface is based on the work of Austrian designer and artist Carl Otto Czeschka who was part of The Wiener Werkstätte, an early twentieth century association of designers, architects, craftsmen, ceramists, jewelers and other graphic arts in his country. This collective of artists was influential for both Bauhaus, art deco and Scandinavian design. Wienerin is a revision and expansion of the Olympia typeface designed almost 100 years ago by Czeschka but adapted for contemporary use with the inclusion of numerous alternative signs and ligatures. Variable font technology allows a greater variety of weights to be achieved. One of the features of the original design was the inclusion of "eifassungen" or modules to create frames. Wienerin presents a repertoire of 500 in 3 weights. With an upward elongated design we have decided to also create a version of the typeface with a larger x-box that allows for a wider use of the typeface family. Roster is a strong brush script family of two weights, caps and a set of ornaments. Roster is great for any kind display use from advertising to packaging and from online to branding. Roster is clear and legible even in smaller sizes and works for longer texts too, but is at it’s best when used for shorter sentences or even just for one or two word display or logo use. Roster is equipped with plenty of Ligatures and Contextual alternates that are automatically activated as long as you keep Standard Ligatures feature on. These features help to maintain the flow and add on some variation when writing with Roster. If you need more than that there is at least three Alternates for each basic character: click on Swash, Stylistic or Titling Alternates in any OpentType savvy program or check out for even more alternates from the Glyph Palette. Since uppercase letters in Roster are mainly designed as initials I made Roster Caps for an all caps version of the capital letters. Roster Caps can be used on it’s own or to support Roster Script. The Vtg Stencil fonts from astype are based on real world stencils from several countries. In the case of French stencils the challenge was special, because of the varieties of different widths and weights between the stencil sets – so I made France No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5. The most unique and eye-catching elements of typical French stencils are the figures 1, 2, 3, 7 and a specially 5. The figure 5 changes in style on smaller stencil sizes, its bobble getting replaced by something like a “breve”. The letters J and Q can differ in style too. While the local stencil lettering styles are gradually disappearing in other countries, there are regions in France, such as Normandy and Brittany, where these stencils are still in use today. They are used for technical lettering, which is what stencils were originally intended for, but also for ads and information signs in a more artistic or patriotic context. Italian type design master Aldo Novarese was not famous for making calligraphic designs, nor had he any interest in them. He is much better known for his text faces, and quite innovative sans serif and decorative designs which became the definition of what we now know as techno and modern. But in 1968, Novarese surprised everyone with a fantastic flowing deco script entitled Elite. Novarese's formula of simple soft curves and toned-down swashes makes for one of the most unique alphabets ever seen, not to mention one of the best flowing and most legible scripts. This is now its digital incarnation, named Fontella. Fontella's applications are virtually limitless. This is the sort of script that can feel at home pretty much anywhere; a sign, a fridge magnet, a bumper sticker, a greeting card, a movie poster, a book cover, music artwork, magazine ads, newsletter headlines, etc. Digitized from original specimen and expanded with a few built-in alternates and ligatures by Rebecca Alaccari, the font was named after the famed jazz singer Fontella Bass.
