I have had the name "Fruitcake Fanatics" in my mind for quite some time now...but I needed a font that suited the name...then one day...actually last Wednesday, I was playing around with some letters (which eventually would turn out to be this font!) and suddenly it struck me: I got the letters for my Fruitcake Fanatics font! K-Type’s ‘Banks & Miles’ fonts are inspired by the geometric monoline lettering created for the British Post Office in 1970 by London design company Banks & Miles, a project initiated and supervised by partner John Miles, and which included ‘Double Line’ and ‘Single Line’ alphabets. The new digital typeface is a reworking and extension of both alphabets. Banks & Miles Double Line is provided in three weights – Light, Regular and Dark – variations achieved by adjusting the width of the inline. Banks & Miles Single Line develops the less used companion sans into a three weight family – Regular, Medium and Bold – each with an optically corrected oblique. Although the ‘Banks & Miles Double Line’ and ‘Banks & Miles Single Line’ fonts are based on the original Post Office letterforms, glyphs have been drawn from scratch and include numerous adjustments and impertinent alterations, such as narrowing the overly wide Z and shortening the leg of the K. Several disparities exist between the Post Office Double and Single Line styles, and K-Type has attempted to secure greater consistency between the two. For instance, a wide apex on the Double Line’s lowercase w is made pointed to match the uppercase W and the Single Line’s W/w. Also, the gently sloping hook of Single Line’s lowercase j is adopted for both families. The original Single Line’s R and k, which were incongruously simplified, are drawn in their more remarkable Double Line forms, and whilst the new Single Line fonts are modestly condensed where appropriate, rounded letters retain the essentially circular form of the Double Line. Many characters that were not part of the original project, such as @, ß, #, and currency symbols, have been designed afresh, and a full set of Latin Extended-A characters is included. The new fonts are a celebration of distinctive features like the delightful teardrop-shaped bowl of a,b,d,g,p and q, and a general level of elegance not always achieved by inline typefaces. The Post Office Double Line alphabet was used from the early 1970s, in different colours to denote the various parts of the Post Office business which included telecommunications, counter services and the Royal Mail. Even after the Post Office was split into separate businesses in the 1980s, Post Office Counters and Royal Mail continued use of the lettering, and a version can still be seen within the Royal Mail cruciform logo.

Postulat Pro is a contemporary slab serif typeface. The family contains 16 fonts: 8 romans with matching italics, from Hairline to Bold. The Alterhard typeface combines the inimitable craftsmanship of the great condensed styles of the early twentieth century and at the same time looks organic and even unusual among modern ones. A distinctive feature of the Alterhard typeface is the smooth transition from the geometrically strict extremely compressed shapes of the bold typefaces to the classic sparse shape of the compressed typeface in light weights. Also unusual for vertical fonts are oblique elements in lowercase letters, which give uniqueness, liveliness and originality to the classic type of font. This allows the Alterhard typeface to be used in any design field such as corporate identity, typography, posters, web design, and other design areas. Blue Sugar is a grunge font which has one letter-shape in white set within a different grunge letter-shape in black. The Regular and Dirty versions have their characters in conventionally upright positions; and there are 3 varieties with the characters in various states of disorder and at slightly varied angles and sizes - called Twirled and Whirled. The Mixed Caps version introduces no new characters, but combines straight capitals and jumbled capitals in the same font, for convenience, in which Upper Case A-Z displays conventional upright Capitals, and lower case a-z displays jumbled Capitals. The package contains both OTF and TTF versions - install either OTF or TTF, not both versions of a font on the same machine.

At the end of the 19th century, the fin de siècle, both Bauer and Berthold released ‚Herkules‘, a heavy Art Nouveau font for ads and posters. This font was carefully redesigned and makes it a great font in Jugendstil surroundings and a splendid partner of the Carlsbad font family.

AlphaBravo was born on a napkin. I was just doodling, playing around with letterforms when the ballpoint glided a little bit too far and suddenly I had my first letter with the dash sticking out on the left of the e’s horizontal line. I quickly checked on how many letters I could let a line stick out! Then I wrote a couple of words that way and letters joined in the most unusual places, creating new closed forms. I gave the font a try and quickly discovered, that I had stumbled onto an interesting new typeface. The dearJoe series of fonts had it’s origin somewhere around 1999, the year I created dearJoe 1, which was a first (and half-assed) attempt at converting my own handwriting into a working font. Being able to type in my own handwriting had always been a childhood fantasy, and even though I only partly understood the software, a working font was generated and I decided to put it on the internet for people to use. And that’s what they did: at this moment the dearJoe 1 font has been downloaded millions of times and can be found on just about anything, ranging from Vietnamese riksjas, a Tasmanian gym to a fancy chocolate store on 5th Avenue. The font is not something I am particularly proud of, but it started me of in building what later became the JOEBOB graphics font foundry. Inbetween creating other fonts, the dearJoe series has become a theme I revisit every once in a while, trying to create an update on how my handwriting evolved, along with my abilities in creating fonts that mimic actual handwriting. In the last decade or so I started implementing ligatures and alternate characters, which helped a lot in making something that can almost pass for actual handwriting.

Alonquin is a typographical tribute to Dorothy Parker and the New Yorker crowd who haunted the Alonquin hotel in its 1920s heyday, sharing scintillating one-liners over sparkling cocktails. Deco and decadent, it aims to recapture the spirit of the age (mostly gin from what I can make out!)

Netherland Perpendicular, a family of five typefaces, is Greater Albion’s end of year Blackletter release for 2015. It is designed in the fine traditions of Victorian Revival Blackletter, where historical veracity is ever sacrificed to aesthetic calm. The five typefaces share uniform metrics, making for charming colour overlay effects.

This typeface is Mergenthaler Linotype’s unlicensed version of Futura, copied weight by weight from Bauer. It was produced in 1939 when Metro failed to gain a significant share of the market, and was later adopted by ATF. The small sizes of Book and Heavy cut for classified are original.

DrivEddie was an attempt to create a rough, hand-drawn typeface that was quirky but easily readable. It has a few serifs so it is almost but not quite san serif. All vertical stems are curved. For almost 25 years DrivEddie was a one-font family and one-font families often have limited applications. In 2020 I returned to this typeface to increase its possible uses by adding five new styles: italic, semibold, semibold-italic, bold, and bold-italic. I also corrected mistakes and added characters.

LECO 1976 is a headline display typeface in OpenType format. The title at the 1976 bottle of Lečo became an inspiration for creating this font. Besides the regular weight of the font, the font is drawn in light and bold font styles too, while each of these typefaces consists of a special alternative of an embedded diacritic. The font contains several specific styles as Stencil, Pixel, Tride, Shadow which combinations offer interesting possibilities for the typesetting. The metrics and kerning of every glyph of the font (except several glyphs in Bold) are identical. All the signs share the same character and size of the capital letters. This font is best used on strong posters or as a headline display typeface.

Open Case JNL is the distant cousin to the 2009 release by Jeff Levine Fonts called Cold Case JNL, as both were based on sets of lettering stencils designed and manufactured by the Huntington Oil Cured Stencil Company (originally of Huntington, New York and later of Delray Beach, Florida). While sharing similar design traits, there are enough differences to have both type designs work well together in a complimentary setting. Open Case JNL is available in regular and oblique styles.
