Roller Poster is named after Alfred Roller. In 1902, Roller created a poster to advertise the 16th exhibit of Austrian Artists and Sculptures Association, representing the Vienna Secession movement. The exhibit was to take place in Vienna during January & February 1903. The location is not mentioned because everyone in Vienna knew it would be held at the exhibit hall in the Secession Building at Friedrichstraþe 12, a few blocks south of the Opernring, near the Naschmarkt. Designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich in 1897, the buiilding has been restored and stands today as one finest of the many fine examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Vienna (see vienna_secession_bldg.jpg). Because of its dome, it is called “the golden cabbage.” The poster itself is unique. The word “secession” is in one type style and takes up two-thirds of the elongated poster. At the bottom of the poster are the details in a different lettering style. It is this second style at the bottom that is the basis for the font Roller Poster. In keeping with our regular naming conventions, we were going to call it Roller Gezeichnete (hand-drawn), but the wonderful play on both words and the shape of the three S’s in secession was too compelling. In November 1965 there was an exhibit of Jugendstil and Expressionist art at the University of California. Alfred Roller’s Secession Poster was part of that exhibit. Wes Wilson was designing promotional material at Contact Printing in San Francisco. Among their clients was a rock promoter named Bill Graham, staging dance-concerts at Fillmore Auditorium. Wilson saw the catalog from the UC exhibit and Roller’s lettering. Wilson adapted Roller’s letter forms to his own fluid style. The result was the poster for the August 12-13, 1966 Jefferson Airplane/Grateful Dead concert at Fillmore put on by Graham (BG23-1). Wilson continued to use Roller’s letter forms on most of the posters he did for Graham through May 1967, when he stopped working for Graham. The posters were extremely successful and the lettering style along with Roller’s letter forms were picked up by other artists, including Bonnie MacLean, Clifford Charles Seeley, James Gardner, and others. The Secession poster and the Fillmore posters have inspired a number of fonts in addition to ours. Among them are JONAH BLACK (& WHITE) by Rececca Alaccari, LOVE SOLID by Leslie Carbarga and MOJO by Jim Parkinson. Each is different and yet each clearly shows its bloodlines. Our font differs in two ways: 1) the general differences in the interpretation of the letter forms and 2) the modification of the basic letter form to incorporate the diacriticals within the implied frame of the letter, after the manner of the original design by Roller. We borrowed Carbarga’s solution to the slashed O and used it, in a modified form, for other characters as well to accomplish the same purpose. We recommend that you buy ours and at least one of the other three. According to Alaccari, a version called URBAN was released by Franklin Lettering in the 70’s (and is shown on page 51 of The Solotype Catalog). For comparison of our font to original design, see image files roller_poster_2s.jpg of original poster and roller_poster_2sx.jpg showing reconstruction using our font for the lower portion (recontructed area indicated by blue bar). Please note the consistency of character width. In the lower case, 23 of the basic 26 letters are 1/2 EM Square wide. The ‘i’ is an eighth narrower, while the ‘m’& ‘w’ are one quarter wider. All the Upper Case letters are 1/8 EM wider than the lower case. This is to make it easier to fill a geometrical shape like a rectangle, allowing you to capture a little of the flavor of Wes Wilson’s Fillmore West poster using only a word processor. We have also included a number of shapes for use as spacers and endcaps. If you have a drawing program that allows you to edit an ‘envelope’ around the letters to distort their shape, you can really get creative. I used Corel Draw for the gallary images, but there are other programs that can accomplish the same thing. The image file “roller_poster_keys.jpg” shows the complete character set with the keystrokes required for each character (see “HiH_Font_readme.txt” for instruction on inserting the non-keyboard characters). The file “roller_poster_widths.jpg” shows the exact width of each character in EM units (based on 1000 units per EM square). You will notice that the font is set wide for readability. However, most programs will allow you to tighten up on the character spacing after the manner of Roller & Wilson. In MS Word, for example, go to the FORMAT menu > FONT > CHARACTER SPACING. Go to the second Drop-Down Menu, labeled ‘Spacing’ and select "condensed' and then set the amount that you want to condense ‘by’ (key on the little arrows); two points (2.0) is a godd place to start. Perhaps because of that and because I lived through the sixties, I have enjoyed researching and designing this font more than any other I have worked on. About family “StenoPro” Short for stenography… The name of the font was taken from the method of high-speed writing (shorthand) with a special alphabet. In shorthand, the rule "write as you hear" applies, that is, spelling is not observed. Capitalization, accents, ghosts, and punctuation except the semicolon are removed. In narrow letters you have the advantage of more words in a limited space… This series is composed and includes dozen fonts with 633 glyphs each, with true italics, and supports of course: Latin, Greek & Cyrillic.

As recently as forty years ago, computers consisted of racks of vacuum tubes, each rack about the size of a refrigerator, with enough racks to fill a good-sized family room required to do routine data processing. This font is based on a monospaced typeface used on a lineprinter from that time, the Unisys 0776. Although its origins are strictly retro, the face retains a timeless techno edge, even today. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

XRoomingHouse is a typeface of pictures that I did many years ago. Most of the pictures are border elements, and within a set they can be combined to make borders or frames. There is no real style consistency in the font—it is an eclectic collection of elements. (Minor corrections and additions were made in 2018 to improve sets that can form frames. For a more ambitious attempt at a font that can form frames, see Framealot). As for the name, boarders stay in a rooming house.

DrivEddie was an attempt to create a rough, hand-drawn typeface that was quirky but easily readable. It has a few serifs so it is almost but not quite san serif. All vertical stems are curved. For almost 25 years DrivEddie was a one-font family and one-font families often have limited applications. In 2020 I returned to this typeface to increase its possible uses by adding five new styles: italic, semibold, semibold-italic, bold, and bold-italic. I also corrected mistakes and added characters.

Back when OpenType hadn't yet opened and Apple was developing the Line Layout Manager called GX Typography I created a test font that I name after my stepdaughter, Kristen (now ITC Kristen). Not wanting to offend my wife I started on a font project and gave her name to this new set of glyphs, Roberta. Unfortunately, the name was already in use so I needed to find another name for the fonts. After September 11th I decided that there were people I'd met during my life who were truly cut from the cloth of the hero. Master Sargent McLemore of the 75th Ranger Battalion was one of these people. I met the Sarge when I was in basic training at Fort Gordon. I saw him 2 weeks before he died in 1970. All of the heroes we see on the silver screen pale in comparison to this man. John Wayne and Clint Eastwood both have played the type well, both could have taken lessons from the Sarge.

A 1927 travel poster for visiting what was then Palestine and Near East was hand lettered in an early Art Deco thick-and-thin type face. The lettering was redrawn digitally, and is now available as the aptly-named Travel Poster JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Jaquizaca is hand drawn type to go well with vector illustrations. Jaquizaca was created in 2001 to make inter-titles for a TV-programme. After twelve years it was revised and updated with ligatures, contextual alternates and other OpenType features. It supports all the European languages using Latin alphabet.

Palitura is a display typeface designed to translate Cyrillic flavor into the Latin script. Palitura means lacquered book cover in Old Ukrainian. The design of letter shapes is inspired by Early Cyrillic handwritten letters and Ukrainian patterns that are conveyed through the sharpness of form, vertical strokes that are narrower at the bottom, stylized oblique hooks at the top, and triangular accents. Agmena™ has no historical precursor; it was designed from scratch by Jovica Veljovi? whose aim was to create a new book typeface. Although it generally has certain similarities with the group of Renaissance Antiqua fonts, it is not clearly derived from any of these. Clear and open forms, large counters and a relatively generous x-height ensure that the characters that make up Agmena are readily legible even in small point sizes. The slightly tapering serifs with their curved attachments to letter stems soften the rigidity of the typeface, bringing Agmena to life. This non-formal quality is further enhanced by numerous tiny variations to the letter shapes. For example, there are slight differences to the terminals of the b", the "d" and the "h" and minor dissimilarities in the forms and lengths of serifs of many of the letters. The tittles over the "i" and "j" and those of the German umlauts are almost circular, while the diamond shape that is more characteristic of a calligraphic script is used for the punctuation marks. Although many of these variations are only apparent on closer inspection, they are enough to give Agmena the feeling of a hand-made typeface. It is in the larger point sizes that this feature of Agmena comes particularly into play, and individual characters gain an almost sculptural quality. The italic variants of Agmena are actually real cursives. The narrower and thus markedly dynamically formed lowercase letters have a wider range of contrast in terms of line thickness and have the appearance of having been manually produced with a quill thanks to the variations in their terminals. The lowercase "a" assumes a closed form and the "f" has a descender. The italic capitals, on the other hand, have been consciously conceived to act as a stabilising element, although the way they have been inclined does not produce a simply mechanical effect. This visual convergence with the upright characters actually means that it is possible to use letters from both styles in combination. Agmena is available in four weights: Book, Regular, Semibold and Bold, and each has its matching italic variant. Veljovi? designed Book and Regular not only to provide an optical balance between various point sizes, such as between that used for the text and that used in footnotes, but also to take account of different paper forms: Regular for lined paper and Book for publishing paper. Agmena's range of characters leaves nothing to be desired. All variants include small caps and various numeral sets with oldstyle and lining figures for setting proportional text and table columns. Thanks to its pan-European language support, Agmena can be used to set texts not only in languages that use the Latin alphabet as it also features Cyrillic and Greek characters. The set of standard ligatures has been extended to include special combinations for setting Greek and Serbian. Agmena also has some initial letters, alternative glyphs and ornaments. Agmena is a poetic text font with forms and spacing that have been optimised over years of work to provide a typeface that is ideal for setting books. But its letters also cut a good figure in the larger font sizes thanks to their individual, vibrant and, in some cases, sculptural effects. Antipod is a versatile sans serif family designed with the stroke of the nib in mind. The early sketches were made with a reed pen and then stabilised to keep the specific junctions between verticals and horizontals shapes. The design of the letters constantly balance between curves and inner sharp corners and the contrast of one is cohabiting with the other to give Antipod its specific design. When Antipod is set at small size its specific are almost unnoticeable but the text has a very particular type colour. Set of ornaments based on the decorative motifs used by the first typographic workshop in Buenos Aires: “Imprenta de Niños Expósitos”, between 1780 and 1824. This set is the product of an extensive historical research that aims to identify the type that came from Europe to the City during colonial times, and during the first years of Argentina’s independence. This group has a lot of diversity, which fluctuates between organic baroque forms and geometric neoclassical. Its characters can be used in editorial design along with Roman typefaces, they work individually or grouped to form different figures, guards or frames. It was baptized in honor to the first printer who worked in the workshop: the Spanish Agustín Garrigós.

In researching historic decorative material offered by Lanston Monotype as well as other metal foundries such as Barnhart Brothers and Spindler, there were occasionally ornaments that defied description. Perhaps it was a Victorian sense of humor or someone really thought these were a good idea or perhaps popular taste has just changed so much over the last hundred years, or our forbearers were completely insane. In any case, LTC is somewhat proud to present a collection of the most bizarre, disturbing and baffling printers ornaments we could find. Along with mutant fowl-children and frolicsome amphibians, there are also Masonic and other secret fraternal symbols that may not be creepy to everyone, but just enough to be moderately disturbing.
