ITC Typados is the joint effort of Roselyne and Michel Besnard and is composed of characters in two different senses of the word. First, it is of course made of letters and symbols, clean and legible with generous widths and x-heights. There is a hint of Art Nouveau style in the tapering, brush-like strokes. But the figures of ITC Typados are also made of characters in the theatrical sense: little tear-drop heads on tapering bodies that bend themselves into the shapes of an alphabet while maintaining a life of their own. The typeface is based on a recurring character in Michel's sculpture and painting, Ado. Ado is the first character who sings and repeats itself in all my creations," says Michel. "This adventure brings new forms for my painting and my sculpture: coiffed heads, bodies in the form of a cone, arms in the form of spread wings, etc." "Type" plus a number of "Ados" equals ITC Typados."

Meteora is a font designed for headlines by Carlos Fabian Camargo Guerrero. Its purpose is to be useful tool for solving decorative problems in graphic design which require broken letters without ascending and descending strokes. Due to its vertical and horizontal proportions these letters are compact, appealing and special to compose headlines and featured with worn look in covers, magazines, posters and advertising material. The first Meteora sketches were made by hand, photocopying and deforming letters of an old Letraset catalog, specifically from slab serif typefaces from the Nineteenth Century. Hence, uppers cases and lower cases were merged in the same height x, obtaining a narrow width, endings with some serifs and stencil cuts here and there. The amount of low contrast between thick and thin strokes brings strength and consistency with the contours apparently brokens. Thus, developed features slab serif and sans-serif proposing empty and full shapes connoting decomposition and noise; and from a rigorous process of scanning letters I set up damaged letters, but drawn with the greatest possible thoroughness and high definition in 438 glyphs per font. Finally, in regular and bold variables I included opentype features with some discretionary ligatures and a few titling alternates. In Meteora bold all glyphs are framed simulating the effect of letters cut out of paper.

Kuschelfraktur is a unique, eye-catching take on the theme of blackletter that replaces the broad nib with a brush pen and achieves stroke modulation through stencil-like gaps. It combines the texture and dignity of blackletter with the human warmth of informal handwriting. Kuschelfraktur offers five separate sets of capital letters and several additional customization option via stylistic alternates. The degree of ornamentation in the blackletter capitals can be increased (SS02) or decreased (SS07), while SS04 and SS05 offer two simpler approaches to capital letters that bridge from blackletter to Roman letters (Antiqua). The default single-storey �a� can be replaced with a two-storey version in SS01, and SS08 offers a single-storey capital �A� for the simple capitals. Finally, SS03 restores some of the more unique letter shapes of the Fraktur style of blackletter. The old-style figures can be replaced with lining and/or tabular figures. All these stylistic sets are accessible via OpenType from the main font, Kuschelfraktur, whereas the spin-off fonts (Traditional, Verziert, Text, Schlicht, Antiqua) offer convenient access to those sets even in environments without OpenType support. This set of letters and ornaments is loosely based on on a typeface that was offered by the DeVinne Press at the turn of the century. We can speculate from its name that this type was used as a display font to try to equate the look of letters on 15th and ­16th century heraldic cartouches, seals, stamps, medals and other inscriptional lettering. The sample was digitized with an “antiqued” outline to further enhance this ancient inscriptional theme. The letters were then grouped in the font with the more traditional Roman letters as the capitals and the Lombardic forms as the miniscules. The original type sample contained some unusual 15th century inscriptional numbers which have been included as extras in the font so the user the has the option to create an authentic looking design.

These four typefaces, Berlinette NB, Lyonette NB, Marseillette NB and Parisette NB, were designed from the same basic shape, a geometric form that avoids strict horizontals and uses more offbeat triangular shapes. Parisette is a fanciful type that is both bouncy and biting. The frivolity and quirk of the narrow width is offset by the razor-sharp, hatchet horizontals, which require protective gloves when type setting. This is a good typeface for enigmatic signs at postmodern student demonstrations.

The Wright-Regan Instrument Company (Wrico) was one of the leading manufacturers of lettering templates for many years. Aside from their own line of products, they also did custom manufacturing. A series of lettering guides called “Mimeostyle” for the A. B. Dick Company of Chicago (produced for use in making mimeograph machine printing stencils) featured an art Deco squared letter design with rounded corners. This is now available digitally as Template Sans JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

A photo of the now closed [circa-1953] Lowell Municipal Pool (at 1601 N. 28th St.) in Boise, Idaho shows the words “Municipal Pool” formed into the cement of the entrance to the above-ground swimming facility. Both the lettering and building entrance designs harken back to the Art Deco era and the sign features stencil-like characters. This inspired a typeface aptly named Municipal Pool JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Terrorista is a homage to everyone who fought against the Millitary Regime in Brazil from 1964 to 1985. The Terrorista Marighella features generous inktraps, fits perfect for small sizes. Terrorista Dilma has the same design as the Marighella, but without inktraps, made for display.
