Trapped home during the Coronavirus outburst of March 2020 the Zetafonts team found some solace from the world-wide anxiety by designing letters for the #36daysoftype challenge. To fight dark thoughts and spread some good karma we decided to add a free font twist, selecting the best glyphs drawn to develop a collection of ten free typefaces for download. We did our best to make this little gift to the community valuable, though developed in record time: although playful and excessive, these typefaces all stem from our current research in contemporary trends and historical design solutions, bridging calligraphy and design. The typefaces have been published daily starting Monday, March 30. You can download and use the typefaces in any way you desire, as they are totally free for commercial and non-commercial use. HWT Bernice is an ornament font system designed by Marian Bantjes. The basic shapes were designed by Bantjes for the Hamilton Wood Type Museum's border stamping machine as a contemporary application for this 150 year old machine, which punches shapes into end grain wood to form continuous border patterns. The digital version expands a bit beyond the punch machine and allows designers to assemble a multitude of options using flipped and rotated variations of these 6 basic shape sets using simple keystrokes.

The idea started with the 1934 sheet music of “Mazurka Amabile”. Its hand drawn title had most of the letters rendered in a rectangular shape [‘square’ in the sign trade] that featured rounded corners and terminals made by the shape of the lettering pen nib. A few letters were rounder in design than others, so those were scrapped in favor of a more consistent character shape throughout the font. Pen Nib Square JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Mono-Spec Stencil is a monospaced family of sans-serif type. At least in default settings, all characters across the typeface share a common width, which is immediately noticeable for its condensed nature. Cowboya is a typography with concave Tuscan serif very contrasted and modernist inspiration with letters in small caps, includes 4 versions of the font that can be used by superimposed layers which results in multicolored typographic titles. For the design of this typeface I was inspired by the credit titles used in the black film directed by Frizt Lang in 1950 called "The House of the River", to the drawing of the original forms of the letters i added decorative elements to give the fonts a festive character, traditionally this type of decorative fonts that emerged in Italy in the nineteenth century were used in large headlines and posters that were closely related to circus shows, carnival or environments of the Far West American. I have also rounded the sharper joints of the antlers and counterforms to create a contrast with the sharp Tuscan serifs which brings a modern background of retro inspiration and soft shapes.

Eurostile® is one of the most important designs from the Italian font designer Aldo Novarese. It was originally produced in 1962 by the Nebiolo foundry as a more complete version of the earlier Microgramma, a caps-only font designed by Novarese and A. Butti. Eurostile reflects the flavor and spirit of the 1950s and 1960s. It has big, squarish shapes with rounded corners that look like television sets from that era. Eurostile has sustained the ability to give text a dynamic, technological aura. It works well for headlines and small bodies of text.
