Gears, designed by Janet Valdez of Janworx, was inspired by the popularity of steampunk artwork, for which gears and levers are a defining element. Gears is a single bold typeface, incorporating gears and levers into each glyph in one form or another. It is intended to be used at a large size, and works well in graphics with gradient finishes, textures, and bevels. Lower case letters are uniformly understated, whereas upper case are more elaborate. This typeface is suitable for posters, screen printing, or any general graphics work that requires short words or slogans with high-impact, particularly in a steampunk theme.

The inspiration source for Fantasie Monogram is another hand-drawn design from a vintage embroidery publication which relies on rigid geometric letterforms on a dynamic slant stepping downwards. This monogram, which evokes visions of it embossed or printed on antique cookie tins, was originally intended to adorn handkerchiefs, but the possibilities of its use are up to your imagination. This is one of many monogram designs from the early 1900’s which fall into a two letter format that is either adorned or interwoven decorative elements. The Data Error Vert AOE Pro family is another spinoff of my Data Error AOE Pro family. Quite simply, it takes on a slightly different feel than the original pin matrix grid by stroking across all vertical glyph lines. The vertical lines break up the readability somewhat of the original grid and lend a more tech vibe to the family. Sheet music for another one of those songs from the early part of the 20th Century with a wonderfully wordy hand lettered title was the model for the Art Nouveau flavored Go Home JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. 1908's "I Used to be Afraid to Go Home in the Dark (Now I'm Afraid to Go at All)" is comprised of eighteen words. It may have been a mouthful to request from the local sheet music shop, but the lettering on its cover made it a great candidate for preserving as a digital typeface.

Inspired by the strange, blocky lettering on the sides of a set of a set of plastic kitchen containers in my childhood home, 8th Avenue is a sophisticated, somewhat syncopated font with a retro look and feel that at the same time brings a very modern attitude to your design. 8th Avenue works well as display font for packaging, headlines and logos. Those pastel turquoise plastic boxes from the early 1950s, with white screen printed letters reading FLOUR, SUGAR, COFFEE etc. on one side were a simple quiet presence in our home back then and for decades after. Seeing them, even that soft blue-green colour felt like home. SUGAR, the soul survivor of that set has become one of those mundane items of daily life that somehow become simple icons of another time, ripe with memories. Obviously I had to make a font. The ideal typeface for cartography The Swiss designer/typographer Felix Arnold designed Cisalpin during the late 1990s, after he had challenged himself to create a contemporary typeface that could be used for cartographic uses. Arnold came to the subject of cartographic typefaces after analyzing many maps and atlases, and discovering that there was no standard typeface for these types of documents. Like any good cartographic type, Cisalpin is very legible at small sizes. While he was drawing this typeface on his computer, Arnold used a reduction glass to refine his design, making it work in these situations. Cisalpin is a linear sans serif face, with slight resemblance to renaissance serif types. The various weights are all clearly differentiated from one another. And because space is often a premium on maps, Cisalpin runs narrow. Words close in around themselves to help them become more identifiable. The letterforms in Cisalpin are durable, and can maintain their readability when placed over complex backgrounds. They have open interior forms, flattened curves, tall x-heights, and a capital height that almost reaches the tops of the ascenders. Cisalpin also has pronounced Italics, with a very clear angle of inclination. Each letterform in the family has been optimized so that they cannot be easily mistaken for another. This again helps minimize the misunderstandings that often occur because of illegibility. Although Cisalpin was developed for use in cartography, it may be used for countless other purposes; any font that can work well in small sizes on a map could be used almost anywhere else!

The Ladislav font revitalises Sutnar’s legacy, while not explicitly copying any of his original fonts. It however keeps true to their technicist character and initial principles of character creation - a simple modular system of combined geometrical segments. This approach affects all round shapes of capital and lowercase letters, as well as the shapes of the majority of numbers.

Kewl is the result of being caught in the afterimage of one design project while conceptualizing another one. Just before finishing the final tests on Mrs Blackfort, the first of what became a long series of Charles Bluemlein fonts, some of the letters began morphing differently in my mind. The idea was to go on the heavier and more playful side, but with a South American sign letterer’s twist, rather than just good handwriting. I did some sketching, took some notes, then got busy with other projects. Some of that stuff eventually seeped into Candy Script and, to a lesser extent, the Whomp font. But it was only a matter of time before I got back to the original concept and finished it. Kewl is ideal for food packaging, book and music covers, magazines, and window splashes. In his 1538 book on measurement, Albrecht Dürer gave clear descriptions and drawings about the proportions of the letters in both Roman and 'fraktur' alphabets (from Latin 'fractura', meaning that it's broken up with lots of different angles rather than smooth curves). Here is the fraktur alphabet as a font completed for use today, with a few characters modernised and some gaps filled. Of course there are countless examples of fraktur fonts already circulating, and indeed one foundry even has another version of this particular one; but we have different approaches to some of the questions raised, we have aimed at a more even tracking (horizontal spacing), and the 260 glyphs in our version include accents and other diacritics, and the modern symbols which Dürer would surely have embraced if he had had access to the internet.

This typeface has the most important ingredient of all: love. So it’s not surprising that the font is called El Amor. It is a reversed oblique all-caps headline font that consists of two styles, “Regular” and “Fill”. Feel free to experiment with them, together or alone. Write something with “Regular”, copy paste it to another layer and switch to “Fill”. Give it a little offset if you like or place it straight on top, both works fine. This all started with a love for Jenson. I know there're hundreds of variations on that theme. But, that is where I began, several years ago. How far it came, as usual as I wandered through the vagaries of font design, is not unusual. If you've read any of my font design books, you know my design processes are quite loose and spontaneous. I wanted the general feel of a favorite old font, but softer, easier, and more comfortable. I built these on the same vertical metrics as my Librum Publishing Group. However, this family is not part of that group. I used the metrics because that shows my current taste in fonts. This family does work with the Librum group—but to be honest, I haven't experimented enough to come up with a good companion. I suspect I'll need to make another companion family. I may need make a non-modulated bold version also. But, that remains to be seen. I'm pleased with this.
