Rummaging through the toolbox recently, I was surprised by how many allen keys I had from years of assembling flat-pack furniture. After some experimenting with the keys to make up individual letters I was struck by their graphic quality. The typeface is defined by the slim, right-angled shape of the allen key; creating a geometrical, yet playful font. The typeface is suitable for logos and feature headings.

Gillies Gothic font was originally designed by William S. Gillies for Bauer'sche Schriftgiesserei. The Extra Bold Weight was designed by Freda Sack at Letraset Design Studio and later the Extra Bold Shaded was designed by Phillip Kelly at Letraset. The extravagant capitals should be used as initials with the more reserved lowercase, and the lowercase should be set closely, overlapping where possible, to reproduce the look of true handwriting.

Horizon was inspired by the style of the lettering used in the original Star Trek TV series. Quite fittingly, this font was used 21 years later in the film Star Trek: Into Darkness. It was designed in 1992 by Bitstream staff designers.

I just love biscotti; they’re one of my favourite cookies! I thought they were all rock hard and half-moon shaped, but I found out that there’s a ‘soft’ variety as well, mainly aimed at young children who may have trouble munching on the hard cookies. Soft Biscotti is a handmade, all caps font. It comes with extensive language support and a set of alternates for the lower case letters.

Inspired by the splatters that come from a heavily inked architectural ruling pen gliding along the surface of a highly textured watercolor page—Splash. A popular hobby in the 1950s and 1960s was creating your own wallets, belts and other items from leather do-it-yourself kits. Stamped or carved initials, names or phrases were often added to the leather with special tools and templates - many featuring a Western-styled alphabet with a hand-lettered look. Swanville developed as part of a train font that eventually became LetterTrain. Visigoth font was created in 1988 by Arthur Baker for AlphaOmega Typography. He designed it specifically for setting the text of A Dante Bestiary published in 1989 for Ombondi Editions in New York. Highly expressive and unusual letter shapes make Visigoth unique among script faces: it has bold, pen written lines, a slight incline, and a distinct variation in stroke weights, making it ideal for advertising and other display work.

Carina is based on the Modern serifs from the 18th and 19th centuries. With high contrast and proportions, the font has a pronounced feminine nature tailored by its stylish details and ornamental swashes and ligatures. The round letter shapes evoke the impression of pointed pen calligraphy. Carina s most striking feature is the Cyrillic glyph set (together with swashes and ligatures) that is created by a native Russian designer.

BOXDON is an extra heavy expanded typeface which was especially designed for VERTICAL layout. Each shape looks like a box and has minimum graphical treatment to distinguish each character. It means that the counter space is not enough to use this typeface for small font sizes, however, for titles this typeface should give incredible effects. I highly recommend using it with software that is compatible with vertical layout. (e.g. Adobe illustrator)

Sign Production JNL somewhat resembles Sign Kit JNL but there are some noticeable differences. The letters and numbers in Sign Production JNL are bolder, wider and have some slightly different character shapes. The common theme is that both fonts were designed from die-cut letters and numbers found in the Webway Sign Cabinet, manufactured by the Holes-Webway Company of St. Cloud, Minnesota until its demise in the 1980s.

Mestizo is a term traditionally used in Latin America and Spain for people of mixed heritage or descent. In some countries it has come to mean a mixture of European and Amerindian. The font Mestizo is based on a strict grid system – but combines it with ethnic symbolism. Six weights can be combined in various ways. Accius, Alerio & Amias display the basic geometric shapes, Balbo, Belus & Borba represent the playful icons.

In Sidewalker we can see pieces of OCR-A, letters and of other fonts; letters pressed over metallic supports with too much ink and then redesigned on a computer. Reminiscent of how different materials in Burri or Rauchenberg's paintings are used. Some numbers have the same shape of some letters (J=2, 6=G=9, I=1=l ...) and many pieces of letters are copied into others. Very experimental...

Each font from the TT Ricordi family was drawn by a separate designer and has its own story. With that, all three fonts are close in thickness and similar in their character compositions and are featured in the uppercase set and the small capitals set, which replaces lowercase characters. The fonts have the broad support of Latin languages and support basic Cyrillic. The project originates from the pre-coronavirus tourist trips to Italy, during which our art director Yulia Gonina has accumulated many photographs of historical inscriptions and tablets. Many of these inscriptions had interesting character or unusual character shapes. We wanted to work with them, to try to reinterpret them, and, if possible, make them ultramodern and accessible to the modern font user. The fonts from the TT Ricordi typeface turned out to be quite display and contemporary, but at the same time, they retained subtle references to historic inscriptions. The fonts fit perfectly both on the covers of book classics and in glossy magazine layouts. They can also be used in posters and packaging, or as the main expressive element of company branding. In addition, all three serifs from the TT Ricordi font family go well with functional sans-serifs such as TT Norms Pro or TT Commons. TT Ricordi Nobili is a display serif with a rich Roman ancestry and contemporary world views. It stands out from the crowd with its subtlety and elegance. The font was drawn by Anna Tikhonova and was inspired by an inscription carved into the stone floor of a cathedral in Florence. Because people walked over the inscription, some of the letters got thinner and worn out over time. It is this feeling of disappearing or flickering elements that we wanted to capture and implement in the project. The TT Ricordi Nobili has high contrast, even though the font itself is quite thin. The serifs in the font are not massive at all, but at the same time, they are display serifs. There is a certain tension in TT Ricordi Nobili, and the viewer perceives this tension. We can say that behind the external classic facade lies a rather modern plot. The font has a large set of discrete ligatures which allow to create interesting combinations and expand the capabilities of the font. There are 709 glyphs in the TT Ricordi Nobili font, and a whole set of useful features, such as: aalt, ccmp, locl, numr, ordn, tnum, pnum, case, dlig, ss01, ss02, ss06, ss07, ss08, ss09, ss10, calt. TT Ricordi Todi is a wide serif with a classic base and a contemporary nature. The font turned out to be refined yet sharp, and in places even pushy and aggressive. The font was drawn by Yulia Gonina, and the project was based on plaques with engraved street names from the small Italian town of Todi. The main challenge was to decipher the characteristic features of the signs and emphasize them in a modern way. In addition, it was necessary to draw a Cyrillic alphabet that would not be inferior to the Latin alphabet in its expressiveness. The TT Ricordi Todi has fairly wide character proportions, and there is practically no contrast in them. The main feature of the font is the combination of smooth round shapes with deliberately squared shapes. In addition, the font is characterized by crisp and sharp character details, exaggerated ascenders and descenders, and muted contrast. Among the interesting font peculiarities, you can choose between the characteristic long descenders and ascenders and their more tempered versions, you can find a stylistic set with triangular dots, alternative versions of the EF characters and two letter ? shapes, round and squared. TT Ricordi Fulmini is a fashionable contemporary serif firmly holding on to its historic roots. The font turned out to be like a thistle flower: bright and catchy, but still subtle and delicate. TT Ricordi Fulmini was drawn by Marina Khodak, and the initial inspiration for the project was the inscription on the altar from the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia. As the font was pulled into “contemporaneity”, it was completely transformed and revealed its new side. The main catchy detail in the TT Ricordi Fulmini is the aggressive and rather sharp diagonal serifs. In addition, in the process of working on the font, several graphic solutions emerged, for example, the mono-serifs and the very calligraphic connections of diagonal strokes with their historic spirit. We wanted to keep them, and thus 4 thematic stylistic sets appeared in the font, thanks to which we can greatly change the perception of TT Ricordi Fulmini. In addition, the font has a set of interesting discrete ligatures. Handy Andy Andy Lethbridge had only just completed his graphic design BA at the University of Portsmouth when he was spotted by Jason, who’d seen Andy’s exquisite hand lettering at his degree show and on Instagram. Keen to push the handwritten theme further, having recently launched a digitally-created, chalky script font (FS Sammy), Jason offered Andy a job and the chance to develop a suite of more stylised, truly hand-drawn fonts. Andy duly got out his pads, pencils and pens, and started experimenting with styles and textures. Magic followed. Imperfection perfected Most ‘handwritten’ typefaces are created entirely digitally. Not FS Shepton. From the start, the intention was to create a collection of alphabets of similar character but different texture and style – 100% hand-drawn and purposely imperfect, with the kind of inconsistent, organic shapes and textures of market stall signs, dashed off in chalk or paint. FS Shepton Regular, drawn with a wet brush pen, is solid with a rough outer edge and a casual but controlled feel. The dry brush used to create FS Shepton Light gives it more inner texture and a more formal, slanted, calligraphic style. FS Shepton Bold, drawn using a wider, looser dry brush pen, has a woody grain in the middle of its broad strokes and greater solidity where the brush moves more slowly. Fresh as a daisy Think of FS Shepton not as a family of three weights of the same font so much as a collection of three fonts penned by the same author. All of them – the light, regular and bold – were created independently as display fonts that offer something different to labelling, packaging, point-of-sale and advertising. Lovingly crafted by hand, they’re a good match for products and settings that share the same artisinal qualities: organic foods, drinks and healthcare products, as well as premium chocolate, coffee and condiments.
