A few days ago, my good friend David from Hanoded.com visited me for a few days. We drank a lot of coffee and walked the streets of Copenhagen - we even took a trip up in Rundetårn! :) Well, on one of our walk (of course looking for inspiration for new fonts) we spotted this handmade sign. We agreed to make a font of the 7 letters available, using our own imagination and style! I called my font Mundbind DK and David named his Mundbind NL - of course it is the landcodes of Denmark and Holland. As you can tell, the font is uneven and somewhat unpredictable - following only the "rules" of the person who handprinted that sign ... and not many of the rules of the good old and respected painter who make beautiful signs ... however, this sign had it's beauty in a natural and innocent way.

Unlike its predecessor, Andes Neue contains a larger character set of 759 glyphs which support 219 Latin-based languages from 212 countries. The font comes in 4 variants that provide a wide stylistic range. Andes Neue is the most similar to the original Andes design. The Alt1 character set bears some similarity to the old Andes's (yet cleaner); Alt2 uses the alternates in the font as default glyphs; and Alt3 is a mixture of the other three variants that offers a balanced set of characters. Andes Neue also includes new accents and glyphs for a wider language support, and a set of small caps (in each variant). All of these features give the font a strong personality that helps make text look more appealing. Rosso is a condensed geometric Sans with a retro style, inspired by various typographic styles. It features the Roslyn Gothic structure, which was popularly used for the covers of Philip K. In many aspects, built in a traditional way. Still, some modern details have been implemented which classic designs sometimes lack. The prime goal was to make a strong text font for books and longer texts in general. This fact does not exclude the possibilites for use elsewhere. Throughout history existing designs have often been the source of inspiration for newer ones. Delicato is no exception and looking closely, similarities can be found in the lowercase of Jeremy Tankard’s Enigma and the stems of Petr van Blokland’s Proforma. The goal is to respect these sources and turn the the typeface into something new with a unique and personal touch. Most text faces carry a basic set of weights like Regular, Italic, Bold and Small Caps. MRF wanted to expand that a little bit further and added a Medium, Alternates and a set of Ornaments to make the family complete and versatile.

The Dutch word “leuk" translates loosely to English as pleasant, jolly, funny, witty, clever, nice, sweet, kind, nice, amusing, entertaining, and funny. My challenge in designing Leuk was to find a unique feature to set apart the font without losing the fundamentals of type design. In the process of doing so, I created a virtual font “smile and wink” in the “o” upper and lowercase with integrated stencil-connecting strokes within the “a,e, k, z, o, ß” to reveal Leuk’s calligraphic roots. Rose fonts are based on examples published in the book "Script Lettering" written by M. Meijer in 1957. These kind of handmade lettering were served as a point of departure or inspiration for many other designers along the time. These writings had flowing lines, elegant curves and flourishes, which gave him a lot of rhythm and unique personality. Gothiks Round is the rounded version of Gothiks. It is a narrow 6-weight display sans-serif influenced by Texturas. The rhythm and verticality of Texturas can be easily identified on the letters with diagonal strokes like A N M K k V v W w X x Y y Z z: here they are all vertical. This kind of morphology was chosen because it accepts condensation in a very natural way, giving to this sans-serif a very unique personality. The intermediate weights can be used for short texts while extreme weights are excellent for big sizes. It has an extensive character set—with extensive language support—and many OpenType features like fractions, small capitals and different figure sets. Default figures align with lowercase. The typeface’s name refers to the plural of the word Gothic, which in turn can refer to both sans-serifs or Blackletter, depending on geographic location.

Patent Reclame manages to be light-hearted, while clearly showing its blackletter roots both in the shape of the individual letters and the rhythm of text on a page. The designer is unknown. Schriftgeisserei Flinsch of Frankfurt a.M. cast the face around 1895. Nicolete Gray shows a quite similar face called “Graphic,” from Stephenson Blake in 1896. Personally, I don't think that Patent Reclame looks like an English design, but I do not have any proof one way or the other. The numbers are proportional, intended for posters, not spreadsheets. Two ornaments are included, an art nouveau rose at #172 and a lilypad with long tendril at #177. Great for invitations, posters and flyers announcing fun events. Do not use for obituaries. Quite readable in smaller sizes for short blocks of text. I really like the buoyant quality -- a nice combination of discipline and enthusiasm.

In 1864, a new edition of ‘Labèrnia dictionary’ was published. The book is commonly known under this name as a homage to the author. The typeface used in this publication has been taken as the main reference for the design of a new type family. Groovy started out as a prospective variant in the ‘Flashback’ series but very quickly established its own distinct appearance, especially with the lower case letters blending into the format so well. There wasn't any preconceived idea to design a retro looking font in principle, it simply evolved that way, but I do think it has several characteristics reminiscent of style genres from the '70s. It’s probably quite subliminal and like me, you may find yourself thinking, what does that remind me of? The double-entendre'd title is quite apt too, not merely for reasons of its outwardly retro appearance but also because of the considered, rounded elements forming the negative spaces throughout. The font also has something of a chameleon-like personality, being both adaptable and capable of having a trendy / fun appearance, or alternatively something solid and stylish, depending on the use, as demonstrated in the banner examples here.

CA Oskar came into being as a custom typeface for the international Traumzeit music festival. As a substantial part of the new corporate identity, it had to be characteristic, but also flexible in use. Starting with the design of compressed caps for headlines, the typeface was soon expanded by a condensed weight for setting of text and further developed into a fully functional font with two widths and two weights. Both weights are very space-efficient, which was -- apart from aesthetic considerations -- an important issue in the process of the design. CA Oskar is a mixture of industrial harshness and friendly round forms, reflecting the spirit of fusion, which is basically what the whole festival is about. Its very slim proportions in two widths make it an attractive alternative to fonts like Alternate Gothic, but CA Oskar adds an extra portion of personality and a coherent choice of weights.

Antipod is a versatile sans serif family designed with the stroke of the nib in mind. The early sketches were made with a reed pen and then stabilised to keep the specific junctions between verticals and horizontals shapes. The design of the letters constantly balance between curves and inner sharp corners and the contrast of one is cohabiting with the other to give Antipod its specific design. When Antipod is set at small size its specific are almost unnoticeable but the text has a very particular type colour. And this specificity is useful when setting texts for display, to give your design a strong personality. Each weight includes a set of extra glyphs to make your text settings more singular. This "Leaf" font has been swirling in my head for years - I remember my sister and I making letter formations like these when I was young. It was exciting to see the lettering look even better on paper than it did in my mind! "Leaf" surprised me by having two distinct looks: in size 24 or smaller, the look is delicate, because your eye doesn't see any space in the letters. In size 28 or larger, the eye can discern spaces, which gives a different facet to its personality. As much as I like this font when viewed on a monitor screen, it really shines when printed.
