Rusticana is a part of the 1990 program Type before Gutenberg, which included the work of twelve contemporary font designers and represented styles from across the ages. Linotype offers a package including all these fonts on its web page, www.fonts.de. Rusticana was designed by Adrian Frutiger and appeared with Linotype in 1993. Its historical roots go back to the Roman Capitalis, the all caps engraved writing of ancient Rome which reached its peak in the first century. From this style evolved other Roman forms, and one, Rustica, proved particularly good for text on bronze, as opposed to in stone. The Rusticana of Frutiger has open, seemingly irregular forms which lend a distinctive rhythm to text.

Hodgepodge is a confused mixture of letters that somehow work together. While I know this has been done before I create fonts that I need. And I occasionally have found a need for this. And it was not there, so now it is. There is a mixture of light and dark, bold and regular, caps and lower case but not where you would expect them to be. Since this is a headline font you can set the headline and then easily go back and change a letter here or there to get the best-looking combination. Dex Gothic is another sort of stencil type. Instead of the "normal" routine of blocked-out horizontal or vertical areas, Dex Gothic creates its stencil appearance through the unique placement of diagonals. The result is a technical-like appearance, which bears some resemblance to 1980s technology products. Dex Gothic should be used large in headlines or logos.

A 1928 menu for the restaurant “Rotisserie Du Cardinal” had the word “Cardinal” hand lettered in quite an unusual Art Nouveau type design consisting of thick and thin lines using angles to form the letter shapes. This eccentric (yet charming) style of lettering is now available as Rotisserie Menu JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

The hand lettered cast credits for the 1932 George Arliss film “The Man Who Played God” inspired Lobby Poster JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. A bold and playful Art Deco poster alphabet, its nonconformist character widths and shapes are casual enough for informal designs yet bold enough to get any point across.

Lettering on a 1928 poster for the Delftsh Studenten Corp provided the inspiration for this campy—and camp-like—typeface. Use it anytime you want to capture a nostalgic, outdoorsy vibe. Himmelblau is a Jugendstil font based on a poster from 1902 made by the 'Künstlerbund Hagen'. This group of Austrian artists was formed in the late 19th century and was named after the owner of Vienna inn, which the artists frequented. The group's most prominent members were Heinrich Lefler and Joseph Urban. Himmelblau is quite an elegant font - legible, organic and flowing, so it would be perfect for posters and display uses. Sheet music from the 1921 edition of the Ziegfeld Follies provided the blueprint for this sparkly, sprightly font. Rudge is an intentionally rough sans-serif font. It was designed to share the look and feel of many “antique” fonts, although it lacks the standard serif look of those fonts.
