FangsALot is a bizarre typeface family that was designed to alternate two character sets. These sets are alternated automatically in applications that support the OpenType feature Contextual Alternatives (calt). The template used to design characters is a distorted triangle that resembles a curved tooth or a fang. This shape can be flipped horizontally, vertically, and both horizontally and vertically to give four orientations. Two of these orientations are used in the regular style and two in what is called the italic style. I thought the fang motif did not come through clearly in the regular and italic styles. Rather the impression they give is more like graffiti lettering. To emphasize the fang motif I added two more members to the family by filling fang outlines with unadorned sans-serif characters. Then to allow more color in lettering, I added two more styles with letters on black. I then had six styles based on triangles skewed left and right. Why not fill the family out with three more styles based on an isosceles triangle? The end result is a family of nine. All members of the family are monospaced and are hard to read. The three graffiti-like styles have some alternative letters that can be accessed with the OpenType feature Stylistic Sets. Also, for each style it is possible to use only one set of characters by adding a space after each letter and then adjusting the character spacing. The graffiti-like styles can be useful in situations where the hard-to-read property is not important but where a menacing and vicious touch is needed, such as topics of sharks, teeth, biting, and vampires.

VLNL Berlagebrug Designer Donald DBXL Beekman daily crosses the Berlage bridge spanning the Amstel river in Amsterdam. The Berlagebrug was built as part of the city planning project ‘Plan Zuid’ by H.P.Berlage and opened in May 1932. Its name, carved out of two granite headstones, sparked the design of this font family. The original lettering is attributed to Anton Kurvers in the early 19th century, and can be seen on many Amsterdam buildings and bridges. It’s typical lettering of the Amsterdamse School, the Dutch equivalent of the expressionist art deco architectural style, and mostly known for its extravagant brick work. VLNL Berlagebrug is a rounded display font that comes in three outline styles matching the building materials used in the bridge. Gietijzer (cast iron) is smooth, Zandsteen (sandstone) has a softly distressed outline, and Graniet (granite) is outspoken rough and crumbled. Inspired by an old Russian book about Moscow’s plan to take over the world, this font was designed to give digital prints the taste of hand lettering. It’s vivid outlines and slight differences in boldness between characters give it an accurate and realistic imperfect letterpress look. It works amazingly well as a text font in small sizes and shows it’s crippled outlines only at larger sizes. »CA Moskow has a plan« has got an extensive character-set including Russian Cyrillic, the Russian Rubel and the Turkish Lira sign. Although it includes kerning, for a full simulation of letterpress print and cold-war feeling we recommend to turn it off.

In the course of the re-vitalization of its Typoart typeface inventory, Elsner+Flake decided in 2006 to offer the “Kis Antiqua” by Hildegard Korger, in a re-worked form and with an extended sortiment, as an OpenType Pro-version. After consultation with Hildegard Korger, Elsner+Flake tasked the Leipzig type designer Erhard Kaiser with the execution of the re-design and expansion of the sortiment. Detlef Schäfer writes in “Fotosatzschriften Type-Design+Schrifthersteller”, VEB Fachbuchverlag Leipzig, 1989: No other printing type has ever generated as far-reaching a controversy as this typeface which Jan Tschichold called the most beautiful of all the old Antiqua types. For a long time, it was thought to have been designed by Anton Janson. In 1720 a large number of the original types were displayed in the catalog of the „Ehrhardische Gycery“ (Ehrhardt Typefoundry) in Leipzig. Recently, thanks to the research performed by Beatrice Warde and especially György Haimann, it has been proven unambiguously that the originator of this typeface was Miklós (Nicholas) Tótfalusi Kis (pronounced Kisch) who was born in 1650 in the Hungarian town of Tótfal. His calvinistic church had sent him to the Netherlands to oversee the printing of a Hungarian language bible. He studied printing and punch cutting and earned special recognition for his Armenian and Hebrew types. Upon his return to Hungary, an emergency situation forced him to sell several of his matrice sets to the Ehrhardt Typefoundry in Leipzig. In Hungary he printed from his own typefaces, but religious tensions arose between him and one of his church elders. He died at an early age in 1702. The significant characteristics of the “Dutch Antiqua” by Kis are the larger body size, relatively small lower case letters and strong upper case letters, which show clearly defined contrasts in the stroke widths. The “Kis Antiqua” is less elegant than the Garamond, rather somewhat austere in a calvinistic way, but its expression is unique and full of tension. The upper and lower case serifs are only slightly concave, and the upper case O as well as the lower case o have, for the first time, a vertical axis. In the replica, sensitively and respectfully (responsibly) drawn by Hildegard Korger, these characteristics of this pleasantly readable and beautiful face have been well met. For Typoart it was clear that this typeface has to appear under its only true name “Kis Antiqua.” It will be used primarily in book design.
