Whenever I've stayed in Munich my friend Michael Bundscherer and I go on a typographical expedition. When we talk about that, we remember the bygone world of sign painter. On one of the facades of a furniture shop in Munich, you can discover the lettering of the name in golden letters. This one convinced us because of the simple elegance Art Deco. These letters on the facade are in any case the character set, which forms the basis of this document. The missing (especially the lowercase letters and the numbers) were modeled. The "OPEN" called version tries to replicate the 3-D effect. The font is particularly suitable for shorter texts and headlines.

VLNL Wurst started as a final result in the Typographic Chinese Whispers project for Typeradio.org, in collaboration with the Type & Media master course. A soundtrack of festive Bavarian music accompanied by burping, followed by loud crunching and munching, inspired Alexandre Saumier Demers to create this typeface family. The fraktur letter forms were composed with sausages to form a recipe available in three flavours: Brat, Blut and Bier Wurst. This 'charcuterie typographique' is ideal for an established butcher shop, a local grocery store or a casual BBQ with friends. Wurst is so tasty, you can't get enough of it! China Dragon JNL was inspired by a vintage letterpress logo cut on sale in an online auction. The logo for The China Dragon restaurant (presumably from the 1950s or 1960s) had a wonderfully eclectic hand-lettered look. Some of the original characters were modified slightly to conform with the ones created for the remainder of the typeface, but the original styling remains intact. The unique design of this font allows it to adapt well to Art Nouveau or Mideastern project styles. In January of 2006, Jeff Levine Fonts started with just ten designs. A little more than seven years later, in April, 2013 the release of China Dragon is the 700th font added to this ever-growing library.

In designing an advertising poster to show off the unconventional Safefont typeface, Steve drew what appeared as relatively traditional letterforms for the expository text. When these characters were as well received as the typeface which was the subject of the poster, Steve decided to expand them into a full-fledged graffiti style typeface of their own. While exploring where this new design might lead, Steve worked to elaborate the poster segment which had inspired it. He soon found himself staring at a drawing of a weapons-wielding Bonnie and Clyde. The desperate duo resonated with the graphic elements of the drawn letters; thus leading to the effortless fleshing out of the design, and to its name, Big Clyde.

Gelato Fresco represents a coming-of-age of a script font that started life in 2011 as the popular Gelato Script. If your looking for a vintage animated typestyle that still feels current today, you've just found it! Mushmouth PB started as a digitization of a film typeface called "Albert" by LetterGraphics. This all capitals font has a super subtle bounce and a playful heavy weight. An extruded film variation of this typeface was used back in the day on Post's Frosted Rice Krinkles cereal. Named in tribute to the original font name "Albert", we picked a fellow member of Fat Albert's gang for the name of this font. We think it is fitting, even though the original film font naming had nothing to do with the cartoon at all. Give Mushmouth a spin and pick it up today!

Aeronic is a work of love. I stumbled upon a fantastic Japanese poster for Nikke Coat by Gihachiro Okuyama (1907 - 1981). Gihachiro Okuyama (also: Okayama) was a very prolific Japanese print artist who started his career making woodblock prints, but later moved on to posters and advertisements. I tried to recreate the hand lettering in the original 1937 Nikke Coat poster, but since I had to work with a few glyphs only, I designed the remaining ones myself. The outline of Aeronic is rather thin, with thicker bits in some glyphs. It is quite rough in places, but it all adds to its unique look. Aeronic comes with a bonanza of diacritics.

Babylon was a civilisation that stretched from Bagdad to the Persian Gulf. There is an Old and new Babylonia, the era of Babylon civilization and the biblical Babylon. The oldest scriptures to be found since the rise of civilisation are Babylonic. The Christian, the Jewish and the Arabic culture find its origin in the Middle East. And share more or less the same history, the same roots and DNA. One people, but in reality a melting pot of close related cultures whom could not be more far apart, hostile and suspicious towards each other. An eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth. One could say this disagreement is still alive today and has deeply infected all of our systems. Beyond Babylon is sculpted after Hebrew, Arabic character style elements in a European writing. It questions what happened after the great Babylonic confusion. Did the words finally come across? Did they realize the distant and gap was maybe smaller than expected. This typeface is related to my former character Eurabia. As an artist I like to play with contradictions. Use opposite elements and mould them in to one understandable piece and in addition a thought to chew on. Otherwise the experimental ore shape lovin' typeface user could be very happy with an addition feature to the existing characters. One option more to express your selves in writing. Also this typeface is really suitable for theme writing or advertising. ----------- Babylon war eine Zivilisation die sich von Bagdad bis zum Persischen Golf erstreckte. Aber in Wirklichkeit waren sie ein Schmelztiegel aus eng verwandten Kulturen, welche sich nicht ferner sein könnten: feindselig und misstrauisch zueinander. Auge um Auge, Zahn um Zahn. Man könnte behaupten, diese Unstimmigkeit bestehe noch heute und hätte all unsere Systeme stark infiziert. Beyond Babylon ist eine europäische Schrift, geformt nach hebräischen und arabischen Stilelementen der Zeichen. Sie hinterfragt die Geschehnisse nach der der Babylonischen Sprachverwirrung. Kamen die Worte endlich an? Haben sie realisiert, dass die Weite des Spalts zwischen ihnen vielleicht geringer war als erwartet. Diese Schrift ist verwandt mit meinen vorigen Zeichen der Eurabia. Als Künstlerin mag ich es mit Widersprüchen zu spielen, gegensätzliche Elemente zu einem vernehmbaren Ganzen zu verschmelzen und einen kniffligen Gedanken zu erzeugen. Andererseits könnte der experimentelle oder formenverliebte Nutzer sehr glücklich über eine zusätzliche Funktion der bestehenden Zeichen sein. Eine weite Möglichkeit sich im Schreiben auszudrücken. Diese Schrift ist auch für Werbung sehr geeignet.

The name suggests it: the Chiq is based on a well-known system font from Apple's classic Mac OS operating system. By revamping and expanding good old “Chicago“, I want to make that 90s tech charm available for the future. The model consisted of just a single style and inspired me to create “Chiq Bold,” which later became the starting point for the entire font family. The shapes of the Chiq are constructed according to a very simple principle. The contrast of stems and hairlines becomes more pronounced towards the bolder cuts. A few basic shapes form the framework for all characters. The shapes are very regular and sometimes form somewhat unusual figures, which has a negative effect on readability and makes the font rather unsuitable for long passages of text, but results in a very even typeface. This is particularly true for the extra-wide “UltraExpanded,” which is so wide that you can no longer recognize word images but literally have to spell them out. In this way, words are turned into letter bands with a great decorative effect. With variants from “Light” to “Black”, from “Normal” to “Ultra Expanded” and the italics, Chiq reaches beyond its archetype. This opens up a wide range of uses. It is even clearer, even more sober, and to a certain extent speaks an even more modern formal language. Chiq is also a variable font!

An American Scotch remixed in 27 fonts Mencken has twenty seven styles, divided into three widths, three optical sizes, romans and italics. Generally, optical size typeface families belong to a same common construction. It falls into the same category of type classification, while presenting different x-heights or contrasts. Mencken is unique because it is designed according to different axis and optical sizes. Firstly, Mencken Text is a low-contrast transitional typeface, designed on an oblique axis, asserting horizontal with featuring open counters. Its capitals follow Didots to better harmonize the rest of the family. On the other side of the spectrum, Mencken Head (and narrow variations) is designed on a vertical axis, high contrast, in a contemporary Didot style. The Mencken is therefore a typeface answering to different sorts of uses, whose design is different according to its uses: from oblique axis in small size to vertical axis in large sizes. Vertical proportions (x-height, capitals height, etc.) were calibrated to be compatible with many Typofonderie typeface families. Lucie Lacava and I followed the idea launched by Matthew Carter few years ago for some of his typefaces intended for publications. From Baltimore Sun’s project to Typofonderie’s Mencken It is a bespoke typeface for American newspaper The Baltimore Sun started at the end of 2004 which marks the beginning of this project. The story started with a simple email exchange with Lucie Lacava then in charge of redesigning the American East Coast newspaper. As usual, she was looking for new typeface options in order to distinguish the redesign that she had started. At the time of its implementation, a survey of the newspaper’s readers has revealed that its previous typeface, drawn in the mid-1990s, was unsatisfactory. The Mencken was well received, some reader responses was particularly enjoyable: “It’s easier to read with the new type even though the type is designed by a French.” Why it is called Mencken? The name Mencken is a tribute to H. L. Mencken’s journalistic contributions to The Sun. According to the London Daily Mail, Mencken ventured beyond the typewriter into the world of typography. Because he felt Americans did not recognize irony when they read it, he proposed the creation of a special typeface to be called Ironics, with the text slanting in the opposite direction from italic types, to indicate the author’s humour. Affirming his irreverence, the Mencken typeface does not offer these typographic gadgets. Henry Louis Mencken (1880 — 1956) was an American journalist, satirist, cultural critic and scholar of American English. Known as the “Sage of Baltimore”, he is regarded as one of the most influential American writers and prose stylists of the first half of the twentieth century. This is our first font, based on Peter's own personal way of writing uncials, The rounded letters of the fourth to eighth centuries. The characters in the caps position are more closely related to the classical Roman forms, and the lowercase position has letters that are the more rounded, medieval forms, at the same size, so they can be freely mixed, for a hand lettered appearance. This typeface is currently used for the titles in the TNT Television show "the Librarians". It was originally designed in 1998, and is now available in Open Type Format.
