ITC New Winchester is a revival of a typeface that never really had a first release. The original Winchester was an experimental design created by the American type designer W.A. Dwiggins in 1944. Dwiggins was interested in improving the legibility of the English language by reducing the number of ascenders and descenders; to do this, he gave Winchester very short descenders and created uncial forms for a number of letters. The result was a distinctive text typeface that was occasionally used by Dwiggins and Dorothy Abbe in handset form. Fifty years later, Indiana type designer Jim Spiece has turned Dwiggins's experiment into a new family of digital text types. Spiece gave New Winchester a bold weight, as well as small caps (both roman and italic) and old style figures; he also created two forms of the lowercase f, one with and one without an overhang (in metal type, a kern), and a full set of f-ligatures.

Grantig is a bold serif display typeface. Mandelia was created by Alex Kaczun, an American type designer, in 2010. The typeface was named in honor of Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa, for his “shining example of the incredible strength of the human spirit to persevere in the face of adversity for the pursuit of freedom”. Mandelia is a strong, bold and wide-bodied serif typeface design, reminiscent of the great African landscape with its diverse animal life. It’s easy to see the influence of the 'Rhino' sharp serifs and ‘Elephant’ size stems and proportions. The font commands attention and respect. Great for headlines that pack a punch, logos, posters, and signage. And because it was well designed, it can even be used in body copy at various point sizes. This all started with a love for Jenson. I know there're hundreds of variations on that theme. But, that is where I began, several years ago. How far it came, as usual as I wandered through the vagaries of font design, is not unusual. If you've read any of my font design books, you know my design processes are quite loose and spontaneous. I wanted the general feel of a favorite old font, but softer, easier, and more comfortable. I built these on the same vertical metrics as my Librum Publishing Group. However, this family is not part of that group. I used the metrics because that shows my current taste in fonts. This family does work with the Librum group—but to be honest, I haven't experimented enough to come up with a good companion. I suspect I'll need to make another companion family. I may need make a non-modulated bold version also. But, that remains to be seen. I'm pleased with this.

Didonesque Script has the flair of a script typeface, yet retains the rigid structure and incline of its cousins in the Didonesque family. Senohraby is an uppercase display typeface inspired by the old sign at Senohraby train station that is now slowly chipping away. Senohraby is available in three interconnected styles that freely various ages of the sign. “Paint” is a more or less preserved font written with a flat brush and featuring slight scratches and errors. The other styles, “Dirt” and “Trash”, follow up on this style and are increasingly marked by age, damage and erosion... In each style one can use simple alternation with lowercase letters, context-based alternation to eliminate repetition of adjacent characters, and a broad range of language support. As a result, each letter offers six variations that can be combined. These can be used as another alternation within a single word or as different bold weights. As a bonus, a fourth, additional style named “Crap” is freely available and as the name implies, it contains a wide array of various impurities.

New Lincoln Gothic is an elegant sanserif, generous in width and x-height. There are twelve weights ranging from Hairline to UltraBold and an italic for each weight. At the stroke ends are gentle flares, and some of the round characters possess an interesting and distinctive asymmetry. The character set supports Central Europe, and there are three figure sets, extended fractions, superior and inferior numbers, and a few alternates, all accessible via OpenType features. Back in 1965, Thomas Lincoln had an idea for a new sanserif typeface, a homage of sorts, to ancient Roman artisans. The Trajan Column in Rome, erected in 113 AD, has an inscription that is considered to be the basis for western European lettering. Lincoln admired these beautiful letterforms and so, being inspired, he set out to design a new sanserif typeface based on the proportions and subtleties of the letters found in the Trajan Inscription. Lincoln accomplished what he set out to do by creating Lincoln Gothic. The typeface consisted only of capital letters. Lincoln intentionally omitted a lowercase to keep true his reference to the Trajan Inscription, which contains only magiscule specimens. The design won him the first Visual Graphics Corporation (VGC) National Typeface Competition in 1965. The legendary Herb Lubalin even used it to design a promotional poster! All this was back in the day when typositor film strips and photo type were all the rage in setting headlines. Fast forward now to the next millennium. Thomas Lincoln has had a long, illustrious career as a graphic designer. Still, he has one project that feels incomplete; Lincoln Gothic does not have a lowercase. It is the need to finish the design that drives Lincoln to resurrect his prize winning design and create its digital incarnation. Thus, New Lincoln Gothic was born. Lacking the original drawings, Lincoln had to locate some old typositor strips in order to get started. He had them scanned and imported the data into Freehand where he refined the shapes and sketched out a lowercase. He then imported that data into Fontographer, where he worked the glyphs again and refined the spacing, and started generating additional weights and italics. His enthusiasm went unchecked and he created 14 weights! It was about that time that Lincoln contacted Bitstream about publishing the family. Lincoln worked with Bitstream to narrow down the family (only to twelve weights), interpolate the various weights using three masters, and extend the character set to support CE and some alternate figure sets. Bitstream handled the hinting and all production details and built the final CFF OpenType fonts using FontLab Studio 5.

We’re in a lockdown of sorts (again) and things are pretty … uhm … boring at the moment. Besides that, it turns out that we have a new dominant type of Covid in Holland.. wait, Dominant Type! Ahh, great name for my latest font! Dominant Type is a handmade all caps font. My wife was watching ‘Memoirs Of A Geisha’ the other day, and I am going to take my son Sam to see Japan in May this year, so when I started drawing out the glyphs for this font, the name was already chosen! “Valentia Nit” is a copperplate typeface enriched with swashes and extensions in alternate characters. Its main feature is the intense contrast between thick and thin strokes that gives you clarity of reading while providing a delicate and subtle texture in the text. Another feature is the spontaneity of its stems, the agile and casual ties, which in fact, these combinations can offer the designer a variety of possibilities to structure a logo or headline in sophisticated lettering style. “Valentia Nit” was designed to combine with our previous font “Valentia” in order to obtain the necessary hierarchy of texts using changing thicknesses.

Charter was designed in the mid-1980s by Matthew Carter. The typeface was designed with the limitations of low- and middle-resolution output devices in mind; hence the squared off serifs and the economy of diagonals and curves. The design, however, became an instant success on its own merits. It is an excellent everyday typeface for a wide variety of uses including books and technical manuals. Charter offers small cap, extension and alternate typographer sets that help to make it more versatile and functional. ITC bought the Charter designs in 1993, but Bitstream retained the right to sell the original designs.

A Tarte Tatin is a French upside down apple pie. The story goes that one of the Tatin sisters (who ran Hôtel Tatin in Lamotte-Beuvron 169 km south of Paris), was baking a regular apple pie, but put the apples first and, realising her mistake, tried to rescue the dish by adding the pastry and sticking it in the oven. Tarte Tatin is a really nice all caps font. It was made with a Japanese brush pen on rough paper. Tarte Tatin comes with extensive language support and a set of alternates for the lower case letters.

Pikelet is a misprinted grunge font ideally suited to headlines, poster and display. As well as irregularities of printing in the actual letters, the ordinary versions contain "print errors" around some of the letters, whereas the Clean versions are identical but without those extra bits of overprint. The All Caps version has 2 sets of capitals which are different to the capitals in the Regular version (and to each other). And the jumbled versions have varying amounts of mis-alignment, but not variations in size. I raise chickens for eggs and meat. I usually buy fertilised eggs online and place them in my incubator, which says that it is 'fully automatic'. Of course I added that rather random introduction to tell you how I came up with the name for this new font... Fully Automatic is a handmade cartoon font: I used a sharpie pen to draw the glyphs onto rough paper. The result is a wobbly, yet quite clean cartoon font. Fully automatic comes with extensive language support and two sets of alternates for the lower case glyphs that cycle as you type.

Biographer is a mild upright script drawn by Angel Koziupa, with Alejandro Paul art directing and producing. Elegant but quite reminiscent of roman forms and proportions, Biographer keeps the calligraphy mostly toned down, but its ascenders and descenders occasionally flare out in final swashy confidence. As usual with Sudtipos fonts, alternates are plenty and the personal touch is never amiss. Biographer is great for women's lit and poetry book covers, as well as tame packaging of products where conveying comfort and peace of mind is of importance. Each year whalers from Japan kill more than 1000 whales. Japan says that the killing of whales is a 'cherished Japanese tradition', and that it is taking 'scientific data'. A portion of the whale meat is canned and marketed as 'traditional food'. How sad is that? A huge whale being reduced to a chunk in a can… Canned Whale is a hand drawn, outline style font with a cartoonesque twist to it.
