Spectrum font is based on a design by Jan van Krimpen, who worked on his font from 1941 to 1943 for use in a Bible of the Spectrum publishing house in Utrecht. The bible project was later cancelled but the font was so beautifully formed and universal that the Monotype Corporation in London completed it. Distinctive are the reserved elegance and unmistakeable beauty of form. The italic was kept fine and is a wonderful complement to the other weights, making it perfect for emphasis in text. The form of the lower case italic g is reminiscent of van Krimpen's italic for Lutetia and Romanée. A similar font in form is the Perpetua from Eric Gill. It displays not only similar forms to those of Spectrum, both fonts also have uniquely designed old style figures. The 7 is particularly unusual with its slanted horizontal stroke and marked bend to the left in the lower third of the form. Celestina is the lively spirit, just like drops of ink on a piece of paper or clouds in the sky. The same spirit is maintained by the rounded letters of the script and by the characters' small whorls. Celestina has come to life as a result of a peculiar game in which I tried to bring together the letters with different tempers with help of calligraphic instruments. I wanted to create a very light and playful font which would look like a quick inscription on a piece of paper, but would also be easy to read in a text array. As I was working on the font, my cat Celestina has been very interested in the brush painting process, and I had no other option but to name the font after her! Celestina works perfect for both Moomins stories and personal blogs, as well as for the design of hand-made things, and even just then when you want to put yourself into a good mood!

My eldest son Sam always wanted to visit Japan and he has been saving up for a ticket for years now. We should have traveled there this year, but due to the pandemic, that was impossible. We’re now trying to go next year. Sam and I did make some kind of itinerary and I told him how we were going to get around, as I have been to Japan many times. I told him about the Shinkansen trains, the cute Tram in Nagasaki and the immense subway system in Tokyo. One of the lines in Tokyo is the so-called Yamanote Circle Line, which I have used on numerous occasions. A new font name was born and it stuck to this particular font! The Hybi5 font family can be described as a “crossover” between Antiqua, Grotesque and Brushscript with characteristics from all of this genres. My aim was to design friendly and versatile fonts, which can be used for headlines or slogans as well as for some longer texts. To make the fonts useful for as many languages as possible, I added a lot of exotic accents. All styles contain the whole “Adobe Latin 3 (CE)” character set plus a few letters from “Adobe Latin 4”. A lot of ligatures prettify the look of the fonts. Alternate uppercase letters in the script style might do the same. If you are a professional designer, you will surely appreciate the thousands of kerning pairs within each style, which will make your work easier. I recommend to set Kerning to “metric” and spacing to “zero” in your layout app. Back in 2015 I worked on the first sketches of “Hybi5” using Adobe Illustrator. “Fontself Maker”, an extension for Illustrator, was used to convert the drawings into font-files. This tool can only create “OTF” font files. For this reason there are no “TTF” versions. It’s not the first font I have ever made, but the first to be distributed commercially.

Made in La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland), HyperTurfu was born during the shooting of “The Return of Hyperturfu Xpress 2”. A GoPro on a lego electric train, meters and meters of rails, an empty industrial space, loads of puppets, paper, cardboard, pizza boxes, lights, hot glue and a bunch of friends preparing a one shot scene for a month. The title of the movie was made out of lego pieces, painted with golden spray and hanged over the rails. It was the first inspiration for this awsome superbold font. HyperTurfu is thought from ground up to give a strong impact. It’s gothic retro science fiction 80’s style makes it best suitable for metal music albums or posters. As the “Banco” font it works perfectly with short texts for advertisement, bar, cofee shops concert places or even fancy hairdresser. Just hang it over a pet shop and see what cool animals will come in.

Fishmonger originated from a commission of two fonts for the corporate identity of a fishmonger shop. When sketching the elementary principles for the lettering, the idea for a modern, extensive font family with a large number of styles was born. The first step consisted of defining the range of widths and weights. Then the master design Medium Regular was completed. The next step was adjusting the Extra Condensed Thin, the Extra Condensed Bold, The Extra Extended Thin and the Extra Extended Bold weights, as they are the vertices of an imaginary square map of the face. This meant that, in order to achieve a harmonious result, the x and y axis needed to be defined. From top to bottom, from the widest to the most condensed cut, the proportions are linear. However, from light to black, the line curves gently, allowing lesser difference between the light cuts, and a dramatic one between the heavier cuts. To ensure the original parameters were respected each position on the vertex was checked against the Medium Regular. After sorting out the ideal set-up, the remaining characters of each of the weights were drawn, and the remaining cuts were interpolated according to the principles above. Fishmonger is a functional, clean design, free of any buoyant, ornamental shapes, almost minimalist. Maybe this is what lends the type family its unique appearance.
