Magazin ST is powerful but delicate. SchmalfetteCP is the result of another collaboration between designers Jason Walcott and Rob King. King suggested that Walcott revive this wonderful and somewhat forgotten sans serif typeface from the mid 1950s. Originally designed by Walter Haettenschweiler in 1954, Schmalfette Grotesk was used for many years in the German magazine "Twen". The typeface was notoriously hard to acquire at the time and graphic designers in the USA often resorted to cutting letters from the Twen magazines and reusing them in their own designs. Later, when digital type came along several typefaces very similar were created that claimed to be digital revivals of Schmalfette Grotesk. However, they are actually only loosely based on the original. The proportions are different and in some cases a lower case was added. The original font was all caps. At Rob King's suggestion, Jason Walcott has strived to recreate the most faithful digital revival possible of the original Schmalfette Grotesk with the new version of SchmalfetteCP. In some cases small changes were made to accommodate today's digital needs (e.g. web fonts), but anyone who has ever searched for this typeface now has a version available that most closely resembles Haettenschweiler's original work. My first font for the summer of 2009, Abrect is a new sans serif font where I try to maximize the x-height and keep the design fresh and personal. It fits in with my continuing objective of designing book fonts that I can really use. Abrect is a tangent for me just taking an idea out to its end. In particular, it is a radical modification of my first font in 1993, Nuevo Litho. The hand-drawn shapes vary a lot, many pushing the boundaries of the normal character. With many of the new releases I see, the digital perfection is getting pretty extreme. It’s looking like a Rococo stage of development for many with decoration taking over from function. I'm consciously trying to head a different direction. This is not a normal font for me in that it has caps, lowercase, with the appropriate figures for each case, no small caps. This is the first time I have skipped small caps in over a decade. This font has all the OpenType features in the display set for 2009 except for the small caps. There are several ligatures for your fun and enjoyment: bb gg ff fi fl ffi ffl ffy fj ft tt ty Wh Th and more and many of them are experimental in form. Enjoy!

We introduce our Variable Font from the high-complex BD Gitalona font family. Rigel was inspired by one poster by American artist and illustrator Katherine Milhous. It was a poster promoting the Ephrata Cloister in 1936. The letters from the Ephrata title on this poster are very concise and expressive, reminiscent of blackletter, but have a simplified look, which looks quite fresh even today. It was very inspiring to bring this font to life. In the process of redrawing and redesigning, the font has been slightly modified, but retained the character of those six letters from the reference poster. This is a header font consisting only of uppercase letters. It contains 6 styles from Light to ExtraBold. Despite the fact that the font has the character of blackletter, due to simplified forms, increased contrast and sharp lines, the font looks like a modern rethinking of Gothic script and it has found a new life. The name Rigel is taken for a reason. Rigel is a star, an blue supergiant in the constellation of Orion, and the Ancient Egyptians associated Rigel with the Sah - king of stars and patron of the dead. The human body after mummification was also seen as the embodiment of the soul. Of course, there is no direct connection between the font and Egyptian mythology, but indirectly in this way I wanted to emphasize even more the idea of incarnation, rebirth. Rigel is good for posters, large headlines, logos and any other large font compositions.

Many calligraphers agree that Roman Capitals is one of the most beautiful yet difficult hands to master. Its beauty lies in its simplicity of form and structure, yet understanding and applying these skillfully can take years of mindful practice. My goal was to design Roman Capitals that were smoothly designed with a brush, not carved. The main concept was based on the fundamental strokes that are commonly studied when you practice Roman letters. That’s why many Serifs have these unfinished terminal serifs. I created the Turquoise typeface based on my Capitalis Romana practice with a flexible broad edged brush and gouache. During the lowercase process I was still following Foundational calligraphy with a flat brush. My Turquoise Capitals were then adjusted and redesigned at the Tipobrda calligraphy workshop in Slovenia. Turquoise contains small caps, many discretionary ligatures, ornaments, swashes as well as several brushy nature-inspired ornaments, accessible via OpenType. Ideally suited for headlines or body text in advertising, packaging and visual identities, its delicate shapes, curves and endings give projects a harmonious elegance and stylistic feel in unique Turquoise style. My inspiration for this font showcase is one of the richest islands in the Mediterranean, the place where my parents are from, Sicily. This southern Italian region has so many unique spots: Stromboli, part of the Aeolian Islands, and the Pelagie Islands is one of my favorite places in Sicily. Just like the M.C. Escher impossible figures and optical illusions, "Denedo" is a font that is impossible to construct in three dimensions because it only exists as a drawing. This font is based on the "0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9" characters of one of the alphabets published by Nedo Mion Ferrario in the "Letromaquia" exhibition that was shown in Caracas, Venezuela in the 70's. The reason why I chose to restore and complete this font is that unique and exceptional personality that each word acquires when it is written with this alphabet. The Bitstream version of Linotype Janson. Nicholas Kis (Miklos Kis) was a Hungarian punchcutter who worked in Amsterdam. His types are some of the greatest in the Dutch old face style and have been used as models for a number of developments in this century. The Linotype version of this style, Janson, was created by Chauncey H.Griffith in 1937 and based on an original face cut by Kis in 1670–90. The face is named after Anton Janson, a Dutchman who worked in Leipzig, with whom the face has no connection. The typeface is used for text setting. Cyrillic version was developed at ParaType in 2001 by Vladimir Yefimov.

The Pagnol typeface has been designed with a principle developed by A. M. Cassandre in 1937, when the great French designer created the Peignot typeface following paleographic studies on the evolution of letterforms. Researches in the history of writing have proved that the lowercase "a" is at its origin nothing but the "A" shape transformed through centuries by scribes until the invention of printing. A large number of lowercases meanwhile kept their original shapes. If the scribes’ hand didn’t find the necessity to simplify them, it is only because these letters could be easily written. Integrating the classical shapes of capitals to the lowercases has already been used, keeping the lowercases which are only a deformation of capitals. Nevertheless, the respect of readability imposes to keep ascendants and descendants from traditional lowercases which serve as optical focus points in a text and make reading easier. The particularity of Pagnol is to use rounded shapes on top and bottom of pointed capital letters to make them fit with corresponding lowercases (Aa, Mm, Nn, Vv, Ww, Zz). Lowercases proportions are wide, to be in tune with classic lowercase shapes in order to optimize readability. Five weights in roman and italic have been designed to offer a wide palette of typographic possibilities in all sizes and all paper and screen supports.

Circulaire is a set of initial caps designed by Sjoerd Hendrik de Roos in 1926, and digitized in 2009 by Hans van Maanen. Unusual serifs, spurs and swashes make for interesting continuity points in the familiarly angled shapes, while adding a unique calligrapher's touch to the beheld forms. As far as initials go, this set contains the extra touch of personality needed to lead into a paragraph, which is preferable to the usual swashed italics that are widely used. Circulaire is available in all popular font formats and includes extended support for a wide variety of Latin-based languages.

Rever is an experimental typeface by a young designer Sasha Smirnov. It clearly alludes to 19th century typefaces with reverse contrast, but still the character shapes are as simple and geometric as possible. Rever answers the question “What can a reverse-contrast typeface look like today?” Its set of styles is non-traditional: in addition to a regular one, there are also an oblique (slanted to the left, not to the right!) and a stencil styles. The typeface can work for typographic experiments of any kind -- web, print or motion design. The font was released by Paratype in 2019.
